Doom 3 BFG Edition Includes All of the Dooms, Other Stuff

Remastered visuals and additional levels round out this extra special Doom 3 package.

"Muthafuckas act like they forgot about Doom 3," John Carmack did not say. But I do enjoy imagining him saying things like that.

Hey guys, Doom 3, right? Pretty good game, albeit one that some have perhaps forgotten about in the many years since its release. Well, id Software and Bethesda apparently have no interest in allowing people to forget about Doom 3, as today they have announced the Doom 3 "BFG Edition," coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this fall.

The BFG edition includes both the main game as well as the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, both of which feature remastered visuals, including support for 3D monitors and TVs. In addition to improved visuals, the game includes several new levels included under the moniker "The Lost Mission," as well as a new checkpoint save system, and an armor-mounted flashlight that will give players the revolutionary ability to shine light on things and also shoot them. Simultaneously!

And as if that weren't all enough, the package also includes versions of Doom and Doom 2, which you may or may not already have, depending on what platform you tend to play games on. This would seem to be especially enticing for PlayStation 3 owners, since none of these games have ever appeared on that platform.

The one thing the press release for the BFG Edition doesn't quite address is why, exactly, there is a re-release of Doom 3 coming to retail this year. This year will mark the eighth anniversary of the game's release, which isn't really one of those anniversaries you see game companies celebrating too often. Perhaps this is simply intended as a reminder that Doom is still a franchise that people enjoy, in service of readying the demon-blasting masses for a future Doom sequel announcement? I am speculating wildly, of course, but with E3 around the corner, now seems like a great time for wild speculation. You try it. It's fun!

So what about us who already own Doom 3 on steam?

You can go fuck yourselves.

True

Or download one of the DX10/HDR renderer mods, that will probably still make the game look better than the console counterparts. At least if coupled with some mods that update the texture quality a bit.

Let's not forget Doom 3 was a graphical game-changer with those crazy normal maps. I remember seeing the leaked code and being amazed with the normal map stuff. These days normal mapping is taken for granted, but for me it felt like a major push forward in graphical fidelity.

Exactly, though I remember how impressive all those pre-release screenshots were, and then my complete surprise when Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay came out several months earlier and kind of stole Doom 3's thunder, and on the Xbox no less. Sure, I know a powerful PC at the time would have run Doom 3 faster/sharper than Butcher Bay on the Xbox, but the fundamental features like normal mapping and the harsh, dynamic lighting were extremely similar and super impressive. I also recall just how surprisingly good the Xbox version of Doom 3 was, considering the hardware involved. Both very visually impressive games.

But yeah, Doom 3 was gorgeous and this remaster has me interested.

As a fan of the first two Doom games, the third entry seemed to go against everything I loved about that style of shooter. I trudged and blasted my weary, bleary way through the Xbox version of Doom 3's predictable ghost-train-experience corridors; I've been decrying the game as a bland, forgettable title ever since.

I'll probably pick this up.

I've always thought that Doom 3 was pretty rad. Never got to play that expansion though. I'll definitely pick this up.

But...that whole flashlight thing seems a bit pandering. That shit was great in Doom 3. Removing that limitation takes a bit of the game's identity away. Hopefully you can just turn that whole thing off.

Am I the only one that didn't dislike Doom 3? I don't think it holds a candle to the first two but I don't think it's a terrible game.

The Steam/Retail versions of Doom 3 don't run on Vista/Windows 7.

I, for one, welcome this news.

That's bad info. I just replayed the game on Win 7 like 4 months ago and it was fine. Doom 3 most certainly does work on Win 7. Perhaps it didn't work for whatever setup you have, but there is no universal issue with Doom 3 and Win 7 - as long as you have working OpenGL drivers. AMD's and Intel's OpenGL drivers have been spotty in the past.

I enjoyed Doom 3 a hella lot more then Half-Life 2.  I'm not that surprised that they are doing this as it should be a pretty profitable venture.  I will be giving it a go.

Indeed, many people don't know, but Riddick: EfBB beat Doom 3 to market with normal mapping. The PC version came out a few months later, and in my opinion, rather easily trumped Doom 3 graphically. It matched Doom 3 tech for tech AND had working model self-shadowing, which Doom 3 did not have.

Playing Riddick made me realize that id & Carmack weren't going to be the only real act in town for in shooter engines anymore. There were other people out there in the talent pool that could meet them punch for punch and even best them.

Alex, don't take this the wrong way, but your writing comes off as either snarky or dismissive whether that is intentional or not. This article less than others, but try sounding optimistic about things sometimes, it will reflect well on your character.

Interesting, I want to see what these new remastered visuals are like. I'm not the biggest Doom fan in the world but I still think the series is great. To me, some parts of Doom 3 weren't that...... memorable.... but overall it wasn't a bad of a game. I definitely liked how it was darker and scarier. I remember first seeing the graphics and thinking how creepy the lighting and shadows made everything look.

I'm not sure if I'm going to buy this though as I already bought the other special edition on the first Xbox and I'm happy to go back and play it on that. It would be good though because I haven't played the expansion and 'The Lost Mission" is something new to try. It really just depends on the pricing.

i always assumed doom 4 was one of those obvious games they're working on but never really said anything about. i think this BFG edition is, probably like alex said, to remind people of doom and build hype in preparation of an official doom 4 announcement (maybe at e3).

This really shouldn't be a retail product. I would have been way more excited for an HD re-release of Doom 3 over XBLA or PSN. With Doom 1 and 2 added in I bet this will be a $30-40 when it should be $15-20 for a re-released Doom 3.

I am pumped for this. Screw the lameness of the Monster Closets, I GENUINELY LOVE DOOM 3. It's an id game; they make the best feeling shooters in the world. And Doom 3's guns feel more impactful and fun to use than any stupid SCAR in a modern military shooter. I have been wanting to play this again; heck, I started using Steam because I wanted to play it again without having to dust off my Xbox. So I'm peeved that their PC shooters - even ones ported to consoles - don't include native controller support. I loathe mouse + keyboard; I do not care for it's supposed improved accuracy and speed; they're designed to make Microsoft Office documents. Controllers are designed for games and they're more comfortable. Besides, before Halo started this myth that you need to slow down shooters and implement judicious auto aim, they were perfectly fine for fast paced shooters like Time Splitters and Quake 3 for PS2. I hate mouse and keyboard.

But now I don't have to settle! I'll just get this on PS3! And with all the new content!

This came out of nowhere, but thanks id. Awesome stuff here!

Would've been even nicer to see Doom 3 hit the Nintendo 3DS and the Playstation Vita though. Both machines can handle it...if the Xbox1 could handle Doom 3 and Chronicles of Riddick, than so should the 3DS. Having Doom 3 on-the-go would be INSANE.

This is great! I've been thinking about replaying Doom 3 since Kessler and Steve did it for the Fear Gauntlet.

Also, Doom 1 & 2 on PS3 - about fucking time! Though I really hope they'll have their own trophies (like American McGee's Alice in Madness Returns) and not just be some roms you boot from the proper game (like Splatterhouse 1-3 in the Splatterhouse reboot).

As for the flashlight option, well obviously noobs couldn't handle the original so they changed it and adapted it for today's fanboys always complaining about stuff...

I think that little blurb in the requirements is well out of date, no one reviews that stuff once it's up. There was a period of time where getting OpenGL games working in Vista and early Win 7 was a tough proposition, but that hasn't been true for a while now, unless you're on an Intel chipset that has shit OpenGL drivers. In fact the last patch for Doom 3 even says "Tested and improved Vista compatibility" in the release notes and the Steam version is up to date.

Doom 3 and the expansion are awesome but unfortunately this pack doesn't really do it for me. I've got multiple copies of Doom and Doom2 as well as Doom 3 and the expansion. Top money for several levels, sorry but count me out.
