Doom 3 BFG Edition Includes All of the Dooms, Other Stuff

Remastered visuals and additional levels round out this extra special Doom 3 package.

"Muthafuckas act like they forgot about Doom 3," John Carmack did not say. But I do enjoy imagining him saying things like that.

Hey guys, Doom 3, right? Pretty good game, albeit one that some have perhaps forgotten about in the many years since its release. Well, id Software and Bethesda apparently have no interest in allowing people to forget about Doom 3, as today they have announced the Doom 3 "BFG Edition," coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this fall.

The BFG edition includes both the main game as well as the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, both of which feature remastered visuals, including support for 3D monitors and TVs. In addition to improved visuals, the game includes several new levels included under the moniker "The Lost Mission," as well as a new checkpoint save system, and an armor-mounted flashlight that will give players the revolutionary ability to shine light on things and also shoot them. Simultaneously!

And as if that weren't all enough, the package also includes versions of Doom and Doom 2, which you may or may not already have, depending on what platform you tend to play games on. This would seem to be especially enticing for PlayStation 3 owners, since none of these games have ever appeared on that platform.

The one thing the press release for the BFG Edition doesn't quite address is why, exactly, there is a re-release of Doom 3 coming to retail this year. This year will mark the eighth anniversary of the game's release, which isn't really one of those anniversaries you see game companies celebrating too often. Perhaps this is simply intended as a reminder that Doom is still a franchise that people enjoy, in service of readying the demon-blasting masses for a future Doom sequel announcement? I am speculating wildly, of course, but with E3 around the corner, now seems like a great time for wild speculation. You try it. It's fun!

Attempted to complete Doom 3 like 4 times, once even with a co-op mod, still couldn't bring myself to finish it.

They need to add some new weapons and I'm. For the 5th time.

But are Doom and Doom II playable in 3D? I'd buy this if they are.

So this is $20, max, right? Maybe a downloadable title? Includes a Doom 4 demo/multiplayer beta?

Yeah, I'll admit that I loved Doom 3 as well. It wasn't the same kind of game as the original, but it did still fuck with you like you were a rat in a maze (not as elegantly as Silent Hill 2/3, but still).

I also liked Doom 3. Because I am a manly man and enjoy whiskey, cutting down trees, fast women, fast cars, and red meat. So I agree with you.

But Doom 3 was pretty much the same as Doom 1 and 2. Scary shit spawned out of nowhere and you shot it. There is as weird sentiment about this game that it was bad because it was not the same as 1 or 2 and so its not as good. Doom 3 IS essentially Doom 1 and 2 with the textures cranked up.

Side note. I bet this game gets more love now because it will be different than the military shooters that are dominating currently.

Well... if you put it that way, then yes they are the same. But Doom was all about kiting 20 or so enemies at a time (I only play Ultraviolence), while Doom 3 was more about a few deadly monsters in a dark room that jump out and go "boo".

Count me in, looking forward to see what they do with the new level/mission. It's a long shot but I'd like some new enemies or weapons, just to make it feel a little more fresh.

I haven't read any of the comments, but if it's negative, regardless, to me, this is very exciting, and I'm glad they're putting that expansion pack on as well. Dead Space 3 news, Prometheus, and some Doom 3 announcement. Awesome!

There are people who don't like Doom 3 because they don't think it's a good game, and then there are people who don't like Doom 3 because they can't think for themselves.

@Video_Game_King: Different strokes for different folks. Glad you enjoyed it. The inability to do both was a huge oversight and flipping back and forth was hardly an ideal solution - the fact that this is fixed in the new release is Id acknowledging that it was a poor game design choice.

DOOM 3 was great and I was a fan of the way the flashlight mechanic worked, I thought it added more tension to the game's atmosphere. Whatever though, I might pick it up.

Hoping there is an announcement for DOOM 4 at E3.

Is it going to have better weapon sounds? The original ones are so wimpy and it's intriguing how much of a difference in feel some good weapons sounds make on the game.

I actually ended up making my own weapon sound pack for the original by editing and combining the sounds from a bunch of different mods because I never found a single mod that I felt was great across the board.

I liked Doom 3, but only because I played it with the duct tape mod.

If that mod hadn't existed, I probably would've hated it.

Doom 4 announcement undoubtedly immanent, cant say I'm excited about it since Rage was so tepid. But I always hold out hope id Software will knock it out the park.

Does it have Master Levels for Doom 2? Plutonia Experiment? Evilution? Doom 64? Club Doom?

Actually, in all seriousness, if it has splitscreen multiplayer (Or at least the classic Doom games be based on the XBLA releases,) that'd be nice.

I'm not sure Doom 3 holds up in terms of design anymore. I hope this release will be reasonably priced, despite the amount of content they seem to be shoving into it.

Never played Doom 3, so I will likely pick this up. I have a friend who actually preferred the flashlight method it had previously, saying that it heightened the tension by allowing you to either see or shoot, but not both. Anyone who actually played the game agree?

I wonder if Doom 3 is old enough now that people will stop backlash-hating on it just because it's the trendy thing to do. It was amazing how everybody suddenly were shaking their heads at monsterclosets...

I wonder what they mean by updated versions of Doom and Doom 2. Like JDoom/Doomsday or whatever port it was that replaced all objects in the game with terrible polygonal 3D models? Re-rendered sprites? Just updated to play in HD resolutions (without updating any assets)? I'll certainly pick it up on PS3 as I don't have Doom 3 for that platform. I do have the PS1 ports of Doom 1 and 2, though they were pretty different from the originals.

Exciting stuff. I enjoyed playing Doom 3 on PC in the dark and enjoyed it on the Xbox with a fellow online companion. The Resurrection of Evil expansion pack also brought in some interesting power-ups which changed the playfield of the game. I know Doom 3 has its detractors, but I enjoyed it for what it was - not a cerebral thought-provoking game, but a videogame ghost train of ridiculous weaponry and some great atmosphere.

Let's not forget Doom 3 was a graphical game-changer with those crazy normal maps. I remember seeing the leaked code and being amazed with the normal map stuff. These days normal mapping is taken for granted, but for me it felt like a major push forward in graphical fidelity.

JDoom and DoomsDay don't replace the sprites by default, you have to plugin those mods.

I do remember being blown away when I saw those first screenshots - thinking that video game graphics had pretty much gotten as good as they were going to get. Of course, now the game looks a little dated.

Fun enough game, though. I might pick this up.

Haven't tried them in a long time, but I'm pretty sure at JDoom did that by default around 10 years ago.
