Doom 3 BFG Edition Includes All of the Dooms, Other Stuff

Remastered visuals and additional levels round out this extra special Doom 3 package.

"Muthafuckas act like they forgot about Doom 3," John Carmack did not say. But I do enjoy imagining him saying things like that.

Hey guys, Doom 3, right? Pretty good game, albeit one that some have perhaps forgotten about in the many years since its release. Well, id Software and Bethesda apparently have no interest in allowing people to forget about Doom 3, as today they have announced the Doom 3 "BFG Edition," coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this fall.

The BFG edition includes both the main game as well as the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, both of which feature remastered visuals, including support for 3D monitors and TVs. In addition to improved visuals, the game includes several new levels included under the moniker "The Lost Mission," as well as a new checkpoint save system, and an armor-mounted flashlight that will give players the revolutionary ability to shine light on things and also shoot them. Simultaneously!

And as if that weren't all enough, the package also includes versions of Doom and Doom 2, which you may or may not already have, depending on what platform you tend to play games on. This would seem to be especially enticing for PlayStation 3 owners, since none of these games have ever appeared on that platform.

The one thing the press release for the BFG Edition doesn't quite address is why, exactly, there is a re-release of Doom 3 coming to retail this year. This year will mark the eighth anniversary of the game's release, which isn't really one of those anniversaries you see game companies celebrating too often. Perhaps this is simply intended as a reminder that Doom is still a franchise that people enjoy, in service of readying the demon-blasting masses for a future Doom sequel announcement? I am speculating wildly, of course, but with E3 around the corner, now seems like a great time for wild speculation. You try it. It's fun!

Myeah...besides the somewhat neat graphics back in the day, the game wasn't really all-that-good even then...but I'm sure it will be totally awsome this time!

Eh, not too exciting as someone who played Doom 3 shortly after it came out. Just get the duct tape mod, and the expansion is super cheap now. Maybe this will be mindblowing to someone with a PS3 who never touched it - because it's still a good game - but I'm super meh on this one.

Not sure why they are doing this apart from someone in one of the two companies involved was working on this in their spare time & convinced producers to sell the revamped game as not a lot of word out on Doom 4. Bet that everyone who doesn't have all of these will grab it as it sounds like a good deal & curious to see if they put any other little special things in it (ie. Doom3 mods, interviews, etc.).

Loved Doom 3, big fan of the whole franchise. I played Doom 1 and 2 for 2 years straight when they came out in the early 90's. I know location of every secret.... CANT WAIT FOR THIS!

Maybe they're putting that out to show that ID software is still making profit, something around spread sheets I don't know.

Oh and I thought people didn't like Doom 3, I thought I was the only one that sort of liked it.

The impressive thing was, that RoE uses id Tech for physics as opposed to Half-Life 2 using Havoc, and at that time, the physics in id Tech were also tons smoother & faster as Havoc ever was, which again is impressive if you think that you licensed a separate peace of software that focuses only on that segment and it gets burned by a competitor in which physics where an afterthought.

Theres quotes elsewhere from someone at id saying that they want to use this re-release as a way of getting people geared up for Doom 4, a 'precursor' being the word they were keen to use.

I love Doom so I'll probably buy it. Been an age since I played 3, and I've never played the expansion.

@Ketchupp: Doom 3 does support widescreen on the PC. you have to tweak an INI file to get everything to work.

The improved graphics they are touting will just be in relation to the original x-box release. Will just be the pc version in 720p. I bet 2 million bucks they wont go 1080p.

Yeah, I'll admit that I loved Doom 3 as well. It wasn't the same kind of game as the original, but it did still fuck with you like you were a rat in a maze (not as elegantly as Silent Hill 2/3, but still).

Here's my speculation for the ad campaign voiceover:

I also liked Doom 3. Because I am a manly man and enjoy whiskey, cutting down trees, fast women, fast cars, and red meat. So I agree with you.

But Doom 3 was pretty much the same as Doom 1 and 2. Scary shit spawned out of nowhere and you shot it. There is as weird sentiment about this game that it was bad because it was not the same as 1 or 2 and so its not as good. Doom 3 IS essentially Doom 1 and 2 with the textures cranked up.

Side note. I bet this game gets more love now because it will be different than the military shooters that are dominating currently.
