Double Fine Is Doing A Sesame Street Game For Kinect

It's for the kids!

Fresh off the release of StackingDouble Fine has announced it's working on a hands-free Sesame Street game targeted to kids. In a press release blasted this morning, publisher Warner Bros. revealed Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster, an interactive storybook type of game that's being helmed by the same dudes who built Costume Quest and Brutal Legend

Once Upon A Monster will be using Microsoft’s Kinect hardware, so expect to see a lot of gestures and movement when the game hits later this fall. WBIE says, specifically, players will be asked to dance, pretend to fly, jump, and more in a game that’ll strive to teach kids lifelong lessons in friendship, cooperation, and emotional labeling and recognition. How cute!

== TEASER =="It's great to be working with Warner Bros., especially on a game like Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, which brings together so many things we all care about," Tim Schafer said in the release.

"Sesame Street had a profound effect on me, and many members of the Double Fine team, when we were children. So did video games. Now many of us are parents and we want to share with our kids the great experiences we had, but also the completely new ones made possible by cutting-edge technology like Kinect for Xbox 360. So it's a labor of love on many levels."

The Xbox 360 is the only confirmed platform (seems like this thing could probably work on Move and the Wii with some adaptations) and it’s unclear at the moment if this will be a downloadable or a retail-based title. Here's two more images:

My kids love the older Sesame Street stuff you can watch on YouTube, but whenever I put it on the TV they ask me to turn it off.

Looks interesting, except the Kinect part, but kids deserve quality games, not just Barbie shovelware.

If that's not just marketing speak for YO WE'RE MAKIN A VIDEO GAMES FOR KIDS N SHIT, that actually sounds really cute and could be a neat use of the tech. Good on double fine.

I think that Double Fine is smart enough to know Sesame Streets's appeal to not only youngsters, but to a broad range of folks that have grown up with the show during it's last 42! years on the air. 42 years on television seems crazy to me, That's 16 more years than I've been alive. Folks my age that never grew up with it, may not like this news, or understand it. Hopefully they blow this out of the water and are not just in it for the money

But the Wii and Kinect controls are nothing alike. If it was a PS Move game, then you'd have a point.

The comments on this story are making me really, really happy to be a member of GB. I was just over at GameSpot, that had a similar story and somehow everyone decided it was a great place to turn a Sesame Street game news article into a system war and use copious amounts of the word "shovelware."

A great developer making a kids game is almost unheard of. Means the tykes actually get something worthwhile foe a change.

I am crazy excited about this. I have a five month old son (I'm guessing by the time this comes out he'll be old enough). I can't wait to put him in front of the xbox and have him play. I think it's going to be as much fun for me to watch as it is for him to interact.

As an avid Henson lunatic, this excites the hell out of me.  The combined power of Tim Schafer and Cookie Monster might tide me over.  Who knows if I'll ever get one, but let the records say it took SUCH FORCE for TadThuggish to even consider buying a Kinect.

I think they are still willing to take risks. Look at Stacking. It's hard to sell that game to the average consumer. I think Psychonauts has become such a cult classic that it would have more selling power than you'd think.

@wewantsthering: Man I haven't watched that movie in forever. Now you've inspired me to revisit it.  As far as psychonauts 2, from a commercial perspective I can't really see it being viable. The first wasn't a success financially by any measure and considering what it takes to make a successful game now I REALLY can't see a came like it now succeeding. The only exception would be if it was downloadable which changes things. Although i'm saying all this in a year when duke nukem forever actually exists and will be available to buy so, stranger things have happened.
