Dragon Quest X On Wii, DQIX Out In March

A low-key press event in Tokyo has yielded a pair of tantalizing facts for fans of this classic RPG series.

Still no U.S. release info.
Over at the NeoGAF boards there's a thread looking at Gigazine's coverage (in Japanese) of a small Dragon Quest press event that took place in Tokyo. There's no exhaustive English translation of the entire event, because there are only two facts you really need to know.

The Dragon Quest series, if you don't know, has been one of the biggest things going in Japan for, oh, two decades now. So this is pretty big news...but I'm sure it doesn't surprise anyone. The franchise has always had a history of hanging out on the most popular platforms--first on the NES and Super NES, then PlayStation, then PS2, and now the Nintendo platforms.

No developer was listed for DQX on the Wii, but I hope Level-5 is on it. They apparently did a great job with DQVIII and I've really enjoyed some of their other games. Come to think of it, Level-5 might be the only Japanese RPG house I can really get excited about these days. They really make a quality product. Brad Shoemaker on Google+

This is pretty exciting stuff.  Maybe I'll have something to play on my Wii again soon enough.  They also announced that the DS version is going to retail 5 980 Yen, which is 65$.  I'm not sure if that's the norm in Japan but I hope we don't get that price announced for Canada as well.

It's a little disappointing that we haven't got any US release info yet.

there's no pricing standards in Japan, and Dragon Quest is one of the most popular series, so they charge more for it.

I don't think they could get away with that in America.

The high priced Square Enix games are usually $40 (USD).. so I would expect that.  Plus games are pretty expensive there to begin with (Persona 4 was also around 6,200 yen when I picked it up (in store, not imported).

Stopped playing Dragon Quest VIII, It's on my "probably will never finish list". Got past Dhoulmagus though, damn hard that boss was.

Why aren't they doing a DQ for the PS3 or 360 or both? Most RPG fans don't own a Wii since its not really a hardcore console that could really show of much new that hasnt been done on the PS2 last gen. Other then waggle controlls ofcourse, but seriously who the hell wants to jerk off their controller for a +40h game.(I can go a maximum of 15mins myself).
And dont use the same retarded logic they used for the first DS DQ that ppl don't have the "internet" or "high deffamanition televition"  since that just not true. Most ppl that own a PS3 or 360 have a HDTV.
Also, how awesome would it be to have a DQ in HD whit the nice art and precentation.

Seriously SquareEnix, make a real next gen DQ game on the White engine since you obviously cant code on UE3, it ,might actually turn out awesome.

ALso Brad, If Tri-Ace put their full weight behing a project like say Star Ocean The Last Hope, it would get me super exited. Hope they dont half ass that game since it would kill SquareEnix in my eyes. Level 5 hasn't sold me on White Knight cronicles yet. It somehow seems stupid, but most JRPGs do and turn out awesome.

Isn't DQ9 on two DS carts instead of one? That might explain the price hike.
@PJ: Because more Japanese people own DS's and Wii's.

You are correct Brad; Level-5 is one of the only great JRPG makers left in Japan. DQX should be a success if they are involved. I can't wait for DQIX on the DS.

I really liked Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. I await the arrival of DQIX on the DS. The only very minor gripe I have is that it's going to be on a smaller screen. Other than that, BRING IT ON!!!

Pretty cool, tho I don't know if I want to play another DQ game.

The good part about making it on the wii, is that they can just re-use all of the assets from the PS2 game! :-D

I like dragon quest games for several reason:

1. It's the most refined traditional roleplaying you'll ever see.
2. The game is beautiful.
3. They're incredibly long.

All, when done right on the DS can be great: I can take it where I want, I can play some touch screen minigames, I can do wireless multiplayer and sounds like it'd be the perfect vacation game.
Alas, unless they're going to go crazy with the Wii-Mote (and use it VERY well) the only point of putting DQX on Wii is so that Squeenix can make more money.

I'm really losing my faith in them.

Hmm. You would think they would wait until IX came out before announcing X.

Totally cool with me.   I hope DQX is like DQVIII.  I absolutely loved that game.  Everything about it was so.......charming.

When I pick up DQIX next year, this series will one of the few I've stayed with for 20+ years.  Wonder how many hours I've wasted since meeting that first slime in Dragon Warrior for NES in 1989... I guess I'll be wasting countless more on IX and X (which I hope will be better than DQ Swords was on Wii)

For Red, who said: "Alas, unless they're going to go crazy with the Wii-Mote (and use it VERY well) the only point of putting DQX on Wii is so that Squeenix can make more money."  ...You make it sound like profit isn't their sole objective. SquareEnix is a business. Making money, then finding out ways to make more money is what businesses do...
