Dying Light, Elder Scrolls Online on Consoles Both Delayed

In the weeks before E3, games are shifting release dates.

Did the industry telepathically tell one another it was the day to announce delays? Both The Elder Scrolls Online for consoles and Techland's new zombie game, Dying Light, have moved back.

The Elder Scrolls Online has received a tepid response on PC and Mac, but we're still getting versions of the game for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Those versions were supposed to arrive in June, but Zenimax Online has announced it's going to take another six months to finish them.

"We continue to work on the console versions of ESO, and game development has been progressing steadily," said the company in a blog post today, "but we are still working to solve a series of unique problems specific to those platforms. Integrating our systems with each console manufacturer’s networks--which are both different from the PC/Mac system as well as different from each other--has been a challenging process. It has become clear that our planned June release of the console versions isn't going to be possible."

As a peace offering, anyone who plays Elder Scrolls Online by the end of June will have an opportunity transfer their character to the console version. Plus, it'll only cost you $20 to buy the game, and the company is offering players another month of playing for free.

Dying Light, on the other hand, had already been expected to be released later this year, but Techland's going to need a few more months, too. Dying Light is now expected next February.

"The new date ensures that we can fully realize our vision of an innovative open-world game," said the company in a statement. "We won’t need to make compromises or trade-offs on any of the five platforms we’re working on. For you, it means an outstanding, original game that makes the wait more than worthwhile."

We should see much more of both games next month at E3.

Yea it is getting shit beat out of it, oh well I am having fun the PvP is great fun and just running around leveling my character and getting skyshards has been entertaining the group dungeons are awesome. Even in the newsletter they put out for the first month they bring up every problem, acknowledge it, and said what they are going to do to fix it even down to the "wah wah wah" mouth movements on NPCs that is something I would never expect them to fix just like I didn't think they were going to fix the hit detection from beta.

Well, I'm fully expecting that this is the "good" Techland team working on it so a few more months to work on the game is something I can get behind.

HA!

Too bad about Dying Light. I was hoping it would be a good game. Maybe the extra time will make it so...

@scottp: Even if the game itself were anything more than average, all the hate for it is justified by the awful bugs, exploits, and customer support. How many times have you heard of someone being banned for falling through the world, then being unable to unsubscribe because their account is locked, and when their friend goes to post such incident on the forums, their post is deleted or modified by moderators. And this isn't a one off thing, bullshit in this vein is rampant in ESO.

@scottp: You only get one chance to make a first impression, and MMOs are at a deep disadvantage there, as usually when the game first makes its rounds on the internet it's as some buggy beta or even worse an alpha. The game invariably looks like a joke and that taints it all the way into release. Even after it patches its way to stability it can be hard to beat that first impression, and ESO had a pretty bad first impression.

@finaldasa: probably more to do with the mmo aspect

Probably more to do with the game being in a horrible state.

Outside of the duping, the boting, the cut and paste dungeons that would make FF14's first release and Dragon Age 2 blush, it's the little things. Like an FOV slider for a game on the PC with a first person perspective. I'm half surprised the game didn't come with the X-Axis inverted with no option to change it.

I'm sure ESO will have its niche crowd, but in attempting to cater to MMO and console gamers, it feels like it fails to satisfy either.

Even if the game was ready for the one and PS4, it's another marketing push for the console versions. That's a -lot- of money to spend if the PC version is dead in a few months. I think Zenimax is waiting to see how well ESO retains subscribers once Wildstar and the new WoW expansion comes out.

According to Polygon Dying Light is now coming out in Feb 2015. And ESO for consoles is coming out in December 2014. So that's what Zenimax considers "a few months."

I was hyped for Dying Light until I heard the analog combat from Dead Island wasn't in it.

Yeah that is some bullshit. I loved that combat.

Well that ESO stuff kills any lingering hope of a Fallout 4 Holiday release. Got to be Oct/Nov 2015 now...

That deal is 'special' innit? Please play the game you wanted to play on your console this June, but not on your console but a PC/Mac, which may/may not be that powerful as your new console, so we can still charge you a monthly fee up until we release of your console version this Christmas.

Hmm.

I think the excitement for Elder Scrolls online will be dead by Christmas (arguably dead already) and the subscription fee will probably be gone by then too...

Well they are still new consoles, it may be easier than developing for the PS3/360, but they still have to learn the tools. Developers might pick up and learn the tools faster, however new tools take a little getting used to.

Yeah that's what I assume. Just curious what the hiccup is specifically. Is Xbox One harder to develop for but they're delaying both? Are they still coming to terms with the new hardware? Or is it something to do with the games and development cycles and less to do with hardware?

Uh... why would you play it on a console ? Especially if you already have it on PC ?

That deal is "ok", but completely redundant.

"The Elder Scrolls Online has received a tepid response on PC and Mac."

And, who on god's green earth didn't see that coming, I mean aside from Bethesda and Zenimax? Come on folks, a Star Wars MMO failed! A Conan MMO failed! A LotR MMO got kick to the curb! Star Trek is struggling like a madly paddling duck with only one foot!! Who the hell thought a TES was going to succeed when it is an order in magnitude less well known than such huge properties?

Man, I was so hyped for Dying Light since I'm a huge zombie game fan, but I don't even care anymore. My bet is it'll turn out as a very mediocre game, a game that will be forgotten soon after release (kind of like Infamous Second Son)...

Wow, I totally forgot about that Dying Light game. I hope it's good. Haven't really been into Techland stuff before.

Also, uh, I hope that's not the final boss fight I'm looking at in that Elder Scrolls Online pic there. I was actually really looking forward to seeing what Molag Bal looked like in game for myself.
