E3 2014: EA Press Conference Recap

Passion! Insight! Drama! Games!

The second big conference of the day is EA, and they waste no time, getting right into the action with...

  • Star Wars: Battlefront shows off some "early in-game footage" inspired by the developers' actual visits to locations where the movies were shot. Very brief little snippet as a teaser.
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition looks like it has some impressively large, open environments, leaving a good first impression that was immediately soured when the presenter said "all the feels" out loud like that's something someone should do. Combat looks fairly fun.
  • A new Mass Effect was heavily rumored and shows off some "conceptual prototypes" of environments. It looks quite good. "We're building worlds and journeys for the next generation." Fairly content-light, buzzword-heavy preview, but pretty.
  • Someone in the audience was SUPER EXCITED about The Sims 4. Looks like emotional states are important to keep track of, as it usually seems to be, especially when that crazy Gladys comes to your party. Apparently these Sims are going to be smarter than what has come before, but yeah, this looks like more Sims.
  • EA Sports UFC features...Bruce Lee, which is kinda neat.
  • NHL 15 has changed "almost everything."
  • A new game from Criterion. Moving on from cars to...helicopters? Plus ATVs, wingsuits, boats, jetskis, planes, etc. Exclusively a first-person experience while driving. Gameplay is very, very early, barely textured, even. No title for the game as far as I could see.
  • "Extreme Fantasy Courses" are coming to the next PGA Tour game, which looks entertainingly crazy. Tee off in what looks like a golf course from a Battlefield game.
  • The new Madden features the game of football.
  • EA wants a slice of that MOBA pie with Dawngate. "Flexible metagame." "The game will change every time you play." I would certainly hope so. "A massive, epic, story arc."
  • Our stream went out while they showed Mirror's Edge 2, unfortunately! I am assuming that you run a lot. Got some footage of the end of it and it looks fairly early.
  • Fifa 15 also features the game of football. Pretty sure they've used the word "emotion" at least a hundred times so far during this conference.
  • Battlefield: Hardline has been the worst-kept secret of this E3. Looks a fair amount like a grittier GTA heist mission. Cops vs. criminals, bank robberies, and so forth. Looks like it could be a lot of fun, although it seems likely that the demo they're showing here was probably scripted fairly heavily for the purposes of this stream. Some impressive action with helicopters, miniguns, ziplines, and collapsing construction cranes - not sure how that'll work mechanically. It looks like beta signups start...today, on PC and PS4 if you have a copy of Battlefield 4. 1080p, 60fps on PS4. Game releases on October 21st.

Not a lot of huge surprises here, and a fairly short conference to boot. Doubtless that they would've preferred to keep Hardline secret until now, but it does look intriguing.

Well summed up, @rorie! (Once I got my F#CK THAT GUY out of my system, I kind of feel sorry for the feels-guy. Whoever thought that would be a relevant thing to say at this point should be given a stern talking to. )

Otherwise, EA kind of whiffed it after MS did really well earlier, I think.

EA took a precious hour of my life to talk about nothing

That was it for Mass Effect !?! Fuck. Need more information !!!

Despite feels guy trying his damnedest I am still super stoked for Dragon Age 3.

what about the division?

Say what you will about the whole show (which was pretty lame over all) but the NHL 15 trailer gave me goosebumps (They actually have Al in the rafters of the fricken Joe!!)

Well said, bravo.

That was pretty weak to be honest. Very surprised when it just...kinda ended

Inquisition looks great, and while I vowed to never play Mass 4 I melted like jelly when Vigil started playing during the BioWare package. Fuggit, I still love you!

The only other thing that grabbed my attention was Battlefield Hardline, but I don't think it's... I'm not saying it doesn't look good, but that the scale is far too large for what amounts to cops and robbers. They're clearly going after Payday, but Payday is focused on the moment to moment tension of a heist and not necessarily the spectacle we saw in the E3 demo. I just. I don't know. I'd rather have Heat than Battle Los Angeles, you know?

I'm kind of glad everything around Mass Effect was nebulous. The writers at BioWare are without a doubt talented enough to create a believable post-Reaper universe, it's just a question of whether or not EA would give them the time and resources to do so. I'm not saying a prequel or First Contact War game wouldn't be great, I'd just prefer to see something more ambitious on the story side of things.

EDIT: Okay, I just re-watched the Mass Effect portion, and I'm convinced it's going to be post-Reapers. Fucking hyped.

EDIT 2: From the language used, If I were to make a long-shot guess, I'd say we're going beyond Dark Space, maybe a Star Trek Voyager situation?

It'd be a nice way to appropriately distance ourselves from the things we did in the main trilogy too. Which I really think is kind of crucial for new Mass Effect.

@efesell: I recall some time ago a BioWare person saying that the events of the first trilogy would be "there" but not focused on. That jibes with a Voyager-type scenario where you're completely separated from the Milky Way galaxy.

EA Guy: "Oh, my feels!"

Jeff: GET THE FUCK OFF THE STAGE!

E3 is done people. Wrap it up.

@rorie Do you actually need to own BF4 to get the beta for Hardline? I couldn't get the website to cooperate so I wouldn't know.

*doesn't own BF4*

Yeah, with the exception of that PGA Tour trailer, I was pretty bored with EA's presentation this year.

for ps4 if you have it, you'ill be able to easier access the beta. but no its not required.

Does anyone have a video of that EA dude shooting smoke from the stage at the announcement of the BF beta? I'd love that.

I just can't get over how not even close to done everything was. I feel like EA felt obligated to show it's hand early. Also as good as that Battlefront stuff looks (the thing I was most hyped to see) we still know next to nothing about the game. Also MOBAs are the new generic fps, if you put that next to HoN, LoL and Dota with the UI turned off you'd have a hard time picking it appart

Posted by Corvak

If you want to be noticed as a MOBA...seriously guys. Stop ripping off Warcraft III's style and do something new.

Posted by Wolf3

Aaaaaah yeah, the game of football is coming to consoles!

Eh, nothing we didn't know about. I'm still at least fairly excited about the Bioware games though.
