EA Announces Digital-Only Red Alert 3 Expansion

Red Alert 3 Uprising to hit in March with new campaigns, units, and yes, more Gemma Atkinson.

Yuriko returns!
Yuriko returns!
When you release a real-time strategy game, you immediately set about producing an expansion pack. It's how these things work. EA Los Angeles has proven that it understands the ways of the world this morning by announcing plans to produce Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Uprising, an expansion to... Command & Conquer Red Alert 3. No, it doesn't combine the worlds of Red Alert 3 with 3DO's Uprising X. And I can't even explain to you why I was just reminded of Uprising X.

Though EA specifically uses the term "expansion" to describe it, Uprising will be a standalone product. The single-player component will contain four mini-campaigns. There will be one section for each of the game's three factions that will continue the story where RA3 left off, and also a bonus campaign that serves as an origin story for Yuriko, the Empire's commando unit. There will also be a Commander's Challenge mode where players can play against nine of the game's AI commanders in 50 different challenges. Each will have specific requirements and rules.

The campaign mode will also feature some new full-motion video. The info out so far makes it sound like only Gemma Atkinson and Ivana Milicevic will be returning, but they'll be joined by "an all new set of stars."

Here are the words straight out of Amer Ajami's mouth on all this:

Amer Ajami returns!
Amer Ajami returns!
“Uprising is a game that in many ways reflects the feedback we have gotten from the Command & Conquer community,” said Amer Ajami, Senior Producer at EA Los Angeles. “We’re giving gamers more of what they want – more of the fast, fluid and fun gameplay, more of the story we began to tell in Red Alert 3 and more cutscenes featuring top-notch Hollywood talent. At the same time, we’re excited we’re going to be able to bring new things to the mix, including new units and the Commander’s Challenge, which is a great way for players to hone their skills and get deeper into the combat.”

It's interesting to see that this is going to be a digital-only release, and it sort of makes me wonder how well the game did on PC if they're not putting this expansion into stores. Also of note is that the product has been announced as being "exclusively for the PC." Sounds like Xbox 360 owners won't get a chance to continue the story. But there's still a PlayStation 3 version of Red Alert 3 coming along at some point... maybe it could ship with the Uprising content already on the disc? Possible, but I'm not holding my breath.

Shit, it might as well not exist if it is digital only.

The RA series mustn't be as big the the Tiberium one. I have to say RA3 felt too much like C&C3 which I had been playing for a long time. It wasn't as good though.

They need a new engine and advance the series. It's going to be left behind and lose from lack of sales.

Ah taking a page out of Dawn of War's book with the stand aloneness.

But I fail to see why.
Noones gonig to look at an expansion online and go 'man I really want to play that, but I con't care about the original game'.
Unless they will sell it cheaply so it will be pirated less...? (totally misunderstanding why RA3 was ever pirated anyway)

No that would never happen.

Oh, what fun. I bought RA3 on PC because it's the obvious choice for RTS gaming, but then I re-bought it on 360 because I have a 360-owning friend I wanted to co-op with. Looks like I'll be back on my lonesome on the PC for this extra content. Yay for platform exclusives.

I don't know why they would make this expansion a digitally-distributed exclusive. I love C&C Red Alert 3 but I'm not the type to download my games online. This puts me off.

Anyone else notice the creepy amount of pictures on the Gemma Atkinson page, like 300 plus.

Sounds pretty weak. Given that RA3's campaigns weren't the greatest and took around the half way mark to get anywhere near interesting, four mini-campaigns doesn't seem that appealing to me. The bonus campaign in particular sounds like it's gonna be more of the 'control one commando unit through a map' variety which I depise in RTS games.

I seriously doubt that this content will be available on the PS3 release. But hey, RTS's on consoles suck anyway!

So will I finally get my Tesla Tank? Oh and how about Desolators!

And we finally get to see Yuriko destroy her school and go insane. Should be good.
