Eiji Aonuma Mulls Really Great Idea: Majora's Mask Remake

I know a lot of people didn't like Majora's Mask but I played that game inside out when it came out! The unique mechanic of having 3 days to do everything, the side quests, collecting the masks, let it be so Nintendo!

Yes please. I love Majoras Mask and will have no trouble paying for it again.

I wouldn't exactly call this begging. He was asked about the possibility of doing this and answered the question truthfully. He diddn't go on stage and ask people to wave money around if they wanted it.

Honestly I wanted a 3D remake of this a lot more than OoT. This is easily my favorite 3D Zelda game.

I have a lot of friends who say Majora's Mask is there favourite Zelda game, I didn't realise it was actually considered a bad game by certain Zelda fans. I have never played it myself, I would definitely be up for trying it out if it did get remade.

If Ocarina sells well and makes money I wouldn't be too shocked to see more 3DS remakes of flagship N64 titles.  I don't know if it's possible, but Jet Force Gemini 3DS would be damn near enough to make me buy the system.

If you are a smooth criminal you can get a rom and a texture pack and an emulator and can enjoy what you are asking for.

Easily my favorite Zelda game. This might even be a system seller for me.

Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game and I'm playing through it right now. But I don't really endorse all these remakes... Of course they're gonna do whatever makes money; I just feel like it's disrespecting the originals and tantamount to colorizing Citizen Kane.

As long as a new generation of fans who didn't have the opportunity to play it get a chance to experience this one of a kind, then great.

MM was actually my favorite of the 64 era Zelda's because of all the side content and crazy masks and stuff. Loved playing it and soon enough remake or not I'll be getting it for VC because really I need to get me my Zelda fix.

It took a LONG TIME to get anyone on a new Darkstalkers game, there's still no new Zone of Enders, and Phoenix Wright is ONLY JUST NOW appearing in a fighting game.

Anyway I talk about Majora's Mask a lot. I don't think people remember that it's VERY VERY hard to get out of Clock Town. It's not quite as easy to pick up as Ocarina of Time.

I can get out of clock town with my eyes closed in like 30 minutes.

Yeah you've already played it.

I've never played it, and in clock town there's a quest about a kid with a pikachu mask that you're not supposed to do.

There's a quest about a wedding that you can only get halfway through.

There's a quest with the mailman that you should ignore.

There's a quest with the mayor that you can lose an hour tryina figure out that you can't complete.

You get items that you can't use til much later in the game, and everyone in the town is telling you things that aren't anythin to do with anything for another few hours. Don't try n help the guys with the parade; cos you're not supposed to do that yet. And don't concern yourself with the hand in the hotel floor, cos you're not supposed to do that yet either. Going to shops does nothing, beating challenges does nothing, talking to the mask salesman does nothing.

Only if you can turn back into a human, get the sword, and then talk to the right kid on the right day, at the right time, and beat that challenge, without running out of time, THEN you'll be at STEP ONE of getting out of Clock Town.

Nobody in Clock Town tells you this, all the people there just talk about their own quests.

Clock Town's a nightmare of riddles, red herrings, false leads and unbeatable quests. On a timer.

@Crushed: Relative ease or difficulty simply intersects fun, they are not on the same continuum. The game gives you the tools to succeed no question, it just wraps them in fetch quests and repetition to a degree not encountered in Ocarina.

@nail1080: Funny you mention Dead Rising, besides the "do-it-over-again" mechanic it also took roughly the same amount of creepiness from the art design. ;)

Majora's Mask is one of my favorite games of all time. Maybe not in my top ten, but certainly top twenty. Since its release until around 2005 I played through it quite a lot, getting every mask, item, etc. on every playthrough. The 3 day cycle and the way sidequests and story worked into it was incredible, I think. I also loved the main dungeons, the masks, the characters, the soundtrack...everything about it. If it were remade for the 3DS that'd just be one more temptation for me to buy the system.

I am up for this. If they can do as bang up of a job as they did on Ocarina of Time, then surely Majora's Mask deserves the same level of treatment. Also:

I was pretty young back when I played the Zelda games on N64, so I can't even remember exactly how far I would get into them or if I even played Ocarina of Time, but I do remember playing a good amount of Majora's Mask and being scared shitless by that fucking moon.

If they do remake it, they should include a Majora's Mask Master Quest.

Majoras mask was cool. At least it did something different to all the other zelda games. Once you got your head around the structure of the game it all became a lot more managable. I'm not interested in handhelds really, but yeah remake it why not.

I really don't get why the Giantbomb community can only think in extremes: either a game is the best there ever is, or the WORST 3D ZELDA GAME EVER and there's no middle ground. All of the modern Zelda games have a large number of pros and cons, strengthened by Nintendo's dedication to put work and effort into their projects. How often have they delayed a game to keep touching it up? Pretty often. Does it work out for them? I'd say typically, yes.

Majora's Mask was an interesting spin on the Zelda series. It isn't the worst game. Gosh Giantbomb, you almost make me think that mature people don't congregate here. :(

So much Zelda.... and I still can't get enough. Sounds like Patrick is having the same problem I am: waiting on a 3DS remake, or just caving and buying Majora's Mask on Virtual Console. Thankfully I have many other games to distract me as I wait it out.

I thought the game was interesting but not amazing back in the day (I was a huge Zelda fan too), and I tried playing through it recently and found that the structure, unlike in OoT, is nearly unplayable due to its age. It was an interesting experiment; I'd almost rather see them make a Zelda spinoff that goes even more crazy and applies those strange ideas to a more quality game, or one built from the ground up around those ideas instead of reusing nearly every asset from a previous game.
 
Or at least, if they remade it, they'd have to actually overhaul the game instead of just touching it up. Otherwise, I'm not at all interested. I don't think it was executed all that well, good ideas and concepts or no.

I wish I had played Majora's Mask when I was younger; I fear there is no hope of any such thing happening now (unless I actually go grab an N64 and the game off of Ebay or something, which is unlikely to say the least).

although the 3d zelda is damn awsome to me a "remake" of a game means they completely remake it like they are doing with Halo: Anniversary same game same game engine but today's graphix, (I will not deny that I pumped about 20hours worth into zelda 3d in the first week of its release) but it would be nice to see when game developers say they are going to do a remake they actually do "a remake" not that im to impressed about Halo being the first "actual" remake of a game....so if they are going to do a remake (using what remake means to me) of any Zelda it should be Ocarina of Time!

Fantastic, MM was my favorite LoZ game ever. Second being Windwaker. 
 
Also, after playing through Red Dead: Redemption, I cannot stop myself from calling the Moon "Herbert Mooooooooon" whenever I see it.

Definitely my favourite Zelda, and one of my favourite games of all time! I hope they remake it, and if they do I, I will buy a 3DS just for it. I've been meaning to replay it soon, and this would be the perfect opportunity.  
 
And as far as the divisive opinions on Majora's Mask goes: whatever. Some people didn't enjoy it, and some people did. Perhaps in terms of gameplay (the three day cycle), it was perhaps strenuous, but the world was so beautifully designed and fleshed out. Side quests made the game feel less lonely, as a large cast of characters were expanded on, which is different from regular Zelda games. Along with a darker tone, and a darker world, the whole experience felt very surreal, and just fantastic!

Would definitely play.  Enjoyed many a play through with this one.

It's a good idea as in they can make a ton of money off of it...
I have been damned many a time for saying this, but i don't much care for zelda, and frankly, i don't want the fans to have yet another reason to go insane and annoy the hell out of me.

Awesome! I never actually got to play this one, but I loved Ocarina of Time! I am looking forward to this.
