Electronic Arts Purchases PopCap, Jeff Green for $750 Million

Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle are now under the EA roof. And Jeff Green. Again.

Missing: piles of money.
Missing: piles of money.

The rumors are true: Electronic Arts has purchased PopCap Games and former games editor turned director of editorial and social media Jeff Green for $750 million.

Based on reaching certain financial milestones, the deal could reach as high as $1.3 billion, which jives with the original $1 billion number that was floating around not too long ago.

It's unclear how much Green, whose last name is quite a convenient coincidence, will make out of this.

The deal means EA now adds Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, Peggle and other lucrative franchises into the company's lineup. EA has been aggressively moving into the mobile and social space in recent years, acquiring one of the biggest developers, PlayFish, for $300 million in 2009.

I wonder what kind of ridiculous DRM EA will impose on the PopCap games now. It seems like every EA game I buy now I have to register to my EA account and then sign into that when I want to play. Will they do this with PopCap games too? If I have to type yet another password in just to play Peggle it will seriously dampen my enjoyment of that game. (Although honestly, I may play Peggle a little too much anyway.)

This will make PopCap purchasing decisions decidedly more difficult.

You will have to get an EA account to use online features in pop cap games like fucking ps3 tetris makes you do that will be the first thing.  and that blows since ps3 tetris has a slick look to it like  Pac man championship edition and techno tetris music but you cant use online worth jack unless you bother with making a EA online account. .

But it will be in peggle no matter where you buy the game even on steam.

Then after that they will put in crap DRM thingys.

Huh, I hope they don't charge for Plants vs. Zombies 2 downloadable content.

I would have no problem with this... Maybe I missed something but where's all this free DLC for the first game that you're implying exists? Wouldn't even paid DLC be better than none?

Personally, I have no problem with this news. It's not EA's going to run them into the ground or anything.

This sucks, every time EA acquires a  company, quality always goes right down the tubes. One thing EA never seems to wrap their heads around is quality not quantity. And when they release one that I actually enjoy, they shut down the servers so I can no longer play online. They are getting to the point where they can just release total shit because they know people will buy it.

Best wishes to Jeff. Before Giantbomb existed, he was one of the sole providers of worthwhile podcast entertainment on the internet.

True that. GFWL was utter genius, and sorely missed. Bombcast does an admirable effort in its absence though.

As regards the takeover clearly EA really want that ‘Cudgel of Xanthor’ licence.

You mean Games for Windows Magazine? aka Computer Gaming World? Then I completely agree, I still follow the Greenspeak blog.

Surely not that crappy Live thing, right?

Haha, so Jeff's technically back at EA then? That's hilarious.

Funny to see him in the news since I recently went back to relisten to CGW/GFW Radio from the first episode. Good stuff. That was a great podcast.

Love you, @JeffGreen ! I hope you enjoy your $750 million dollars. Spend it wisely.

If I was Mr. Green I would have held out for a billion, and then it would be off to France for early retirement.

How long until Bejeweled Blitz and Zuma Blitz start advertising Playfish and EA's Facebook games? I wouldn't be surprised to see PopCap themed items in games like Pet Society either. Bejeweled diamond? Zuma frog? (Plants vs) Zombie doll? ;)
