EVE: Valkyrie Becomes Oculus Rift Launch Title

An experiment by CCP has grown into something much more.

We don't know when the Oculus Rift will be released, but we do know one of its launch titles will be EVE: Valkyrie from CCP, the developers of EVE Online.

Unfortunately, this news doesn't come with any real clarity on when Oculus Rift devices will be available at retail. But if we're talking launch games, maybe those details aren't so far off?

EVE: Valkyrie started as an experiment called EVE VR, and debuted at EVE Fanfest last year. Drew and I played around with that early version of EVE: Valkyrie, and it was immediately impressive. Even with the early and blurry version of the Oculus Rift, the sensation of whizzing around space at ridiculous speeds and using your face to line up targets was legitimately amazing.

Now, it's more than an experiment. Hopefully we'll know when we can play it soon, too.

Wait and see. Have some hope.

Awesome. CCP bringing us that much closer to a dystopian cyberpunk future where malnourished VR junkies are mercenary dog fighters paid in bitcoin.

So, the launch title for OR is a high-end space simulator?

Sign me in, Oculus. Hopefully you will not have as waiting for long...

Ever since I heard of that VR headset that doesn't use screens I've steadily become less interested in the OR because it sounds like a lot of the problems can be eradicated from removing screens from the process all together.

EVE and Star Citizen here we come!

I did like DUST, but, yes, this looks way more interesting in every regard, and the EVE soundtrack is fucking amazing (DUST did have a great soundtrack during the beta too, for some reason they took it out at launch. Fuck the contemporary game convention that there shouldn't be any music during gameplay).

If Valkyrie comes even close to living up to its promise, it'll be enough to get to me to fork out for a Rift.

I may never play this, but I'm really excited that it's out there.

As someone who had no real expectations for DUST 514 and was still disappointed by it, I'm worried that this is exciting me.

As someone who has tried this more than once.

It is the most amazing experience i've had as a gamer in my entire life.. Its fucking amazing.

Prepare to be smartbombed..

@dannyhibiki: My thoughts exactly! There is a new Japanese VR accessory that seems to be combining a hose and a sewage filtering system that will keep you going without having to get up for going to the toilet.

Pretty pumped that this is now a launch title. One of the things I've been looking forward to playing the most whenever the Rift consumer version hits shelves.

Can't. Wait.

I am excite! I really hope we get to play it this year.

I've been waiting for a new hot sexy space combat sim since Freelancer... now I get Valkyrie and Star Citizen back to back and both in full VR. Words cannot express how erect I am.

I know I didn't see much, but man.

I like what I saw.

We can only dream.

I probably would never play EVE Online due to the sheer amount of complexity and time it takes to learn (I don't have THAT much free time), however I would absolutely play this!

Is it too much to hope some version of this makes it consoles? Is it?

Edited by nycnewyork

its not a space sim, they have already said its a arcade flight combat games. does not look like you will be pulling out your flight sticks.

Does look rather promising in this brief teaser.

This is quite an interesting announcement/reconfirmation, because the last we had heard from CCP (two months after announcing in August that it was going to be a 2014 release) was this:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/10/24/very-odd-ccp-refuses-to-confirm-eve-valkyrie-on-pc/

From Gamesradar: “No, we’re not necessarily [basing our launch on when Oculus comes out],” Reid said. “While we can’t get into details here, there are other platforms that are available. It is technically possible to run this game without a Rift. There’s a whole bunch of different things out on the market right now.”

CCP doesn't seem to do the coy "we're not talking about that right now", and it's to their credit sometimes....

Not only this makes me even more interested in the Rift, that small clip of Eve music at the end made me grab my purse and almost re-activate the Eve subscription. The music in that game is spot on for the setting and the mood.

Love that they dropped Below the Asteroids at the very end.
