Evil Mountain-Dew-Fueled Robots Coming To World of Warcraft?

Crazy data-mining kids unearth some kind of crazy robot pets in the latest WOW patch.

I can't really tell you what's going on with World of Warcraft these days. When I stopped playing, there was no achievement system, the machinery seemed reasonably steampunky, and you couldn't level past 60. Motorcycles? No way. Back in my day, we fought VanCleef and we liked it! And then I encountered someone who kept responding with "KK LOLZ" to everything we typed and realized I didn't want to become that guy.

Now, the game sounds like it's gone completely bananas and barely resembles the game I obsessively played through two cycles of the beta and the first year or so of the live game. Take, for example, this shot from MMO Champion's investigation of the upcoming 3.1.2 patch:

No Caption Provided
ROBOTS!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!! They're described as being new mini-pets that can be summoned and refueled. This seemed totally out of place for World of Warcraft to me, but remember, my knowledge is way, way, way out-of-date. I briefly exchanged words with Andy McCurdy, our resident raider and obsessive WOW player, and he said it's not so far-fetched when you consider that the Ulduar raid dungeon is full of tons of evil robots and sentries and stuff.

WOW Insider picked up the story, stared at the images for awhile, and speculated that the robot pets, which can be refilled with red or blue fuel, would be some kind of tie-in with the upcoming Warcraft-themed Mountain Dew flavors, which are supposed to hit at some point this summer. Like the in-game fuel, the Dew will come in red or blue, and the "Game Fuel" title has "fuel" right in the name!

Seems pretty plausible to me. I ran the story past Blizzard to see what they'd have to say about these probably awesome and possibly Dew-fueled machines and received back something that sounded a lot like "no comment."

Absolutely. I just remember that dungeon as being a bit more steampunkish and world-appropriate with its robots than these seem to be. Nowhere in the story do I say OH CRAP NOW THERE ARE ROBOTS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN THE GAME DUDE WHAT.

Hey, sorry man. That's the message I got out of steampunky machinery and "ROBOTS!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!"  I haven't played WoW in six months... I don't know why I'm so quick to defend it.

Robots are nothing strange for WoW. Nor are glowing liquids. This looks as fitting as anything else to me, and that was Too's point I imagine, that it's a little ridiculous to consider these out of place considering all the crazy stuff in pre-expansions WoW. Like pets of any kind. You could also see vehicles like airplanes and choppers and trains and even more peculiar stuff like spider legs, a motorcycle's the least of it.

WoW has always had the steampunk flavor with the Dwarves and Gnomes.  Go to Gnomer or inside the PVP hub in Ironforge and see all the robots, tanks, airplanes and the like.  That stuff has been there since the beginning.  If anything the bosses in Ulduar like XT and Mimiron are a little too familiar to the Gnomer boss.

A computer game having an in-game commercial tie-in?  Not news worthy.
Opportunity to patronize WoW players?  Let's do it!

I got wrath of the lich king got to 80 played for awhile raided etc. Found it was way to easy and boring and quited.  WoW is nothing like it was back at 60 the game gets worst every exspansion pack, more casual more easy you zip through the content so fast. The last point where the game was playable was Burning crusade right when it came out.

Not to be rude or anything, but if you have an avid WoW player at Giant Bomb, why don't you make him right the story for god's sake? This is everything but far fetched for WoW, looks awesome too.

Maybe there'll be codes included in bottles of their Dew flavor. And maybe they'll only be included in a small percentage of the bottles!

I can tell you I've never liked the direction that World Of Warcraft took the otherwise masterfully crafted (if almost completely yanked from Warhammer) realm of Azeroth in. I don't know if everything that happens in WoW is going to be considered canon or not when and if they eventually revist RTS games for a Warcraft 4, but if it is, I don't think I'd want any part of it. So many major characters have been killed off as raid bosses or smaller enemies. Maybe this wouldn't be such a bad thing if there was more of a story put into many of these events, and if I hadn't made a pact to never play WoW, because I simply don't have the time to commit.

The only part of WoW I have enjoyed is seeing the trailer for Wrath of the Lich King, and the return of Arthas. That video sent a chill down my spine with nostalgia, and longing for the aforementioned Warcraft 4. The in-engine cutscene I saw was pretty awesome too, because I actually got to see a bit of story expansion, with the undead forces being split into basically two factions, as the elves have become. All of that stuff is awesome, except that it'll lead to the culmination of random players killing Lich King Arthas in a wholly anticlimactic way.

Well, with that bit of ranting aside, the other aspect of WoW that has been bugging me is this whole technology bit. Robots in the Warcraft universe have been limited to some basic goblin inventions until WoW came along. Hell, you're talking about factions with ballistas and catapults as the pinnacle of their seige technology. Stick with elementals and infernals as the big, hulking destroyers of shit.

Edit: as a side, I played a bit of the WoW closed/stress test betas, so it's not like I have no experience with WoW whatsoever. Things were just way simpler back then.

The Gnomeregan dungeon is full of robots and other mechanical creations... and I believe it's been around since WoW's launch in 2004. With that in mind, I don't think that summonable robots are out of place at all.
