Fable III For PC Gets A Date, New DLC Announced

The PC version also gets a "hardcore mode."

Fable III for the PC has been dated: the slightly-less-than-great third title in the Fable franchise will hit the platform May 17, 2011 in the US. This version was once slated to hit on Oct. 26, 2010 alongside the Xbox 360 edition of the game, but it was delayed as Microsoft began focusing on “building experiences optimized” for both platforms.

Perhaps falling under the experience optimization banner are these two key additions to the Games for Windows Live Fable, which the 360 version doesn't have: 3D support powered via NVIDIA and a “hardcore mode” that nebulously adds “a higher level of difficulty.” I wonder if we’ll have to eat meat and tofu to stave off starvation? What about farting to relieve life-threatening gas build-ups? Oh, a man can dream!

== TEASER == This news comes via the recent Microsoft event in San Francisco, where another cool Fable III-related bit of information snuck out. As Major Nelson details on his blog, a second downloadable add-on for the RPG is hitting on March 1. “Traitor’s Keep,” as it’s being called, will offer up several new quests about a mysterious prisoner in three new areas: Ravenscar Keep, Clockwork Island, and the Godwin Estate.

Traitor's Keep will be sold at 560 Microsoft points, and while no release platforms have been mentioned, I imagine both the Xbox 360 and the PC version will get this content.

Nice, hopefully it's better than the main story.

Also, first.

Finally.  Jeebus F'n Crisco.

I've never played any of the fable titles.  Should I give this one a chance on the PC if I like things like Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls?

Posted by PhatSeeJay

How about a DLC that adds events to those elusive 100 fucking days in your "year" as ruler?!

Third?

Such a shame about this game....

Posted by super2j

well finally. I have been waiting for that sucker  a  long time.

Does anybody want this?

Hardcore Fable 3! NO dogs, NO potions and you can dream about any kind of map marker!

Posted by Yummylee

Hardcore mode.. so only three saves for the entire 30 hour adventure? =O

Posted by wolf_blitzer85

I bet it'll look pretty. Too bad the game still fucks you hard in the end.

Posted by gosukiller

Wait. Why would they port the inferior one and not Fable 2?

Posted by AxleBro

Don't buy this. There i said it.

Posted by Crixaliz
@Maluvin: Fable is a much simpler RPG compared to those two. In terms of combat and the choices you make. Also character creation aspect is pretty basic too.

Microsoft has a weird way of alienating the PC gamers and still trying to make a buck or two with late shoddy ports. It's baffling, seeing how they never bothered to port over Gears of War 2 and Fable 2.

Needless to say, this release will bomb. Fable is just not a thing on the PC, as one Mr. Navarro would say.

No, thanks Microsoft. And dear Microsoft, let me tell you: If this game sells poorly (and trust me, it will), thats not because we PC gamers all are evil people who pirated a copy of the game, its because the game is not good and you failed to even deliver Fable 2 to us.

So, with all due respect, take this game and shove it.

I really hope they release a Fable 2 PC version along with this, cause otherwise Im not going to get near it.

Posted by CornBREDX
I will be continuing to not get this game.

@Maluvin:  No. Those games are good and more robust RPGs. Fable is more action oriented and gets farther away from RPG in every outing.

That being said, if you do want to try Fable I suggest either the 1st or the second. The first has a decent story with closure and is fairly fun (which you can get on PC, but it has one quest that breaks the game and they never bothered to fix- so don't marry a particular Mayor of Bowerstone or do any side quest relating to her). The second had decent combat, but a really flawed ending (XBOX only though, so don't know if that's an option for you).

Ah, Fable 3, how you disappoint me. (ker rhyme)

This pretty  much sums it up.

Honestly, I doubt anyone on pc gives a shit about this title anymore, especially after the half-baked track record of the release of fable game(s) on PC. There are so many other, better options... at this point the only sales this thing will get if it's put on Steam and on a ridiculous sale.

Buy Witcher 2 and DA2 instead.

I kinda feel sorry for all the PC players that were looking forward to this...

Posted by crusader8463

Half a year late, and we never got the previous game in the series. No thanks Microsoft.

Posted by Sammo21

Congratulations PC gamers...now out disappointment can come to you in an instant.

Oh but it will look better (isnt that the typical thing I hear now with PC games?  Not features but "it looks better"?).

Posted by blueduck

The Fable series should have died a long time ago.

Posted by Maluvin

Yeah based on my initial impressions and what I'm hearing here this is one to skip.

Edited by donaldkhogan

Well, I'm hoping that "hardcore mode" refers to completely changing the game so that it is fun to play.  Then I'd be all over this.  Dunno about you guys, but I still think Fable is better than either of its sequels.  The Lost Chapters version was awesome on PC.

Fable is not a thing on the PC because (as you said) MS has done its best to prevent it from being that. It's odd that they choose to release the worst title in the series on the PC, but not the one that got the best reception (F2).  I absolutely agree with the rest of what you wrote.

I'm really tired of MS's ways here. It's as if they don't understand at all that games and gamers have been essential in keeping their operating system market-share, and that pissing on them and emphasizing consoles (which they make very little money on) might hurt them in the OS space over time. They HAVE been losing market share since they entered the console space and started undermining PC gaming (buying out devs, dropping PC publishing plans).

Im sorry but fable III sucked

Edited by gike987

Same day as The Witcher 2. So now we have to choose between one of the best looking PC exclusives in a long time or a many months late console port of a game that wasn't all that great to begin with.

Posted by Brake

I was intrigued before all the reviews came out.

Posted by xyzygy

Cool. Lionhead better have been working their asses off to optimize this game better than the 360 version. It was a good game but man, Bower Lake (or the Millfields in Fable 3 era) chugged like bastard.

yea i hated it since the first one lol

Took so fucking long that I don't even care anymore.

Posted by alternate

If they fix a lot of the complaints that is one thing but it is is just higher res and you can use a mouse then it wasn't worth the wait.

Love who this non-news is getting the treatment from the GB community. Please only post stuff we actually care about. LOL

Posted by dr_mantas

The first Fable was great. Loved it. On the PC.
From what I heard about this, I shouldn't even care. And I don't.
This comment is as worthless as Fable III.

Posted by Jayzilla

am i alone in thinking the 3 fable games were just a notch above middling?

Posted by mewarmo990
I liked the first Fable as it had a lot of personality to it, but:

Hey Everyone!

I am going to buy it!  Sue me!

Exclamation marks!

Too little too late. They took their sweet ass time and now anyone who would have played it either played it on Xbox or doesn't give a shit anymore. With so many better RPGs coming out on PC this would be a waste of money to buy.

I stopped giving a shit about Fable III about a week after it came out on Xbox 360 and everyone said it was mediocre, so I'll probably get this when it's on sale for 99 cents during one of those GfW "Daily Deal" events.

Also, Microsoft, do you really have to brand all your games "for Windows"? Considering you don't seem to even give a flying fuck about the platform anymore outside of office software, I'm surprised you're releasing the game at all, but... still, why the branding? Are you afraid customers are going to get confused which version is for PC and which is for the Xbox even with all the huge banners and stickers you mandate they put on the boxes? Are you afraid that people are somehow going to forget which operating system they use? Do you want to make absolutely sure to customers that no, Fable III will not, in fact, run on Linux or Mac? I'm not a fan of companies who patronise their customers.

It's because Microsoft doesn't actually want players to use Windows as a gaming platform.  I'm pretty much convinced that Games for Windows was designed not to make PC gaming better or easier, but to wean PC gamers onto the Xbox 360 by making them use their LIVE system.  There are tons of features that are only available if you have an Xbox, some games require you to use Xbox controllers, all the profile data is really Xbox LIVE stuff, etc.  Considering that the Xbox 360 is a closed platform with subscriptions, advertising revenue, royalty fees, etc., they have every incentive to eliminate PC gaming.

Naturally, I think they're assholes and idiots, but there you go.

If they gave me a mouse and highers res/draw distance on Red Dead Redemption on the other hand... Yes please. I own a 360, but I just can't bring myself to suffer through shooter mechanics on a gamepad.

it is weird seeing this finally having a a release date.

So the Hardcore mode will basically be any other game's Easy mode?

I still can't forgive myself for spending $80 on this game..

YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, LIONHEAD!

It must be bad when you forgot that a game like Fable III even came out in the last six months.

Finally!

If only this had come out when i still cared, half a year ago.
