Fable III PC To Spearhead Another Microsoft-Led PC Push?

A leaked Q&A says it's a 'first step.'

Accurate or not, there's a perception amongst enthusiasts that Microsoft doesn't put enough oomph into its support of PC games. It's a PR battle that the publisher will have to fight with the PC release of Fable III, and if another leaked internal Q&A document obtained by Kotaku is legit, the Lionhead-developed RPG will be a sign that another push--a "no, for serious" push--is coming in the near future.

The question asked in the document is quite pointed, asking if Fable III will signal a meaningful "reinvestment" by Microsoft in the PC realm. It goes on, then asking if this push will be different than others.

No Caption Provided
The response? It's a long one: "In terms of revenue, Windows is far and away the largest gaming platform in the world, so it's an incredibly important part of Microsoft's business. From core games like Fable III to casual, social and Facebook titles, more gaming happens on Windows than anywhere else.

== TEASER =="Windows 7 is a world-class gaming platform, and you can bet Microsoft has a vested interest in using it as a platform for amazing first party content. Fable III on Windows as well as Xbox 360 this holiday is a great first step, and we'll have more news for you later this summer." (Emphasis added.)

Before E3 2010, Microsoft announced plans to offer day-and-date releases through Games on Demand for Windows, in addition to building up its lacking back-catalogue of non-Live games. It's a step in the right direction, for sure, but it's still no Steam.

But what is this great summer surprise? The published portion of the Q&A didn't have the natural follow-up, not that Microsoft would spoil the mystery beforehand anyway.

Lets just leave Pc's to what they do best....MMOs and work.....Consoles have moved on so much there is no longer this large divide in services between the platforms, infact the consoles are much much better than anything on PC.

Fable 3 looks kinda cool, and if I can play it with better graphics and faster load times, all the better.

Well, probably won't be because MS are kind of trying (and even that's an overstatement) to push their pathetic download service on PC.

I'm hoping there is at least a retail release, though.

To be honest I don't even understand how people likes FPS on consoles. I can think of many other reasons why PC is as good as a gaming platform, as a console. Not to mention it's easier and cheaper to develop PC games than console games providing more creative and immersive games.

Screw Fable, push for a Gears 2 and 3 release on the PC

I'd even take a Halo 3 release. Kids these days need to experience the precision of playing shooters with a mouse.

why microsoft can't leave their service on consoles baffles me. they're clearly not needed for pc gaming anymore, with things such as steam dominating the pc market. i'd just prefer it if they leave the console games on consoles, and i'll play a console if i ever desire to play such a game. windows is pretty much an open system, so them trying to bring in their closed-nature xbox live port won't ever sit well with pc gamers.

The original Fable was a pathetic excuse for an RPG and Fable 2 didn't even have a PC version. Forgive me if I'm not all that excited... As for other MS titles coming to the PC in the future. Now that's good news.

Wait, wait...you can play games on the PC too? Whaaaaaaaa? Oh, you mean like Farmville and Peggle, right? I mean, there's no real games like FPS on there. People would rather use a controller anyways, it's easier to aim. I mean, can you imagine playing MW2 with a mouse and keyboard? How would you switch weapons? Duder.

Hahaha, yeah right. I'll believe this when I see it happening. Microsoft hasn't given a shit about the PC platform for some time now, just look at the sad state of Games for Windows (both the crappy implementation of Live and the pitiful promotion of titles on Microsoft's own website).

Want  PC gamers to take seriously again Microsoft? Then make Rise of Nations 2 already, and make it good. Do that and I'll believe anything you tell me.

Yet another pc gamer who hates the idea of having to actually pay for a useful and reliable service that actually works. Xbox Live is awesome and if PC had a similar service it would lead to better things for the platform.
- Piracy would be reduced
- Achievements would exist for all games
- Many more developers would be motivated to actually make PC a lead skew or at least not release broken, half assed ports
- Hundreds of games that would normally be exclusive to console would be available for PC

How are these potential things not good for the platform?

@Lazyaza:
The only realistic consequence on that list of 4 is reduced piracy, and even then dubious.
The truth is that the reason why people don't develop for PC is more of a giant middle finger to the pirates/fall back excuse (see: epic) than actual loss of money (they do lose profit, but they still do profit unless it's an extreme case like epic's streak of epic...oh, you know*).
I mean shit, piracy on the DS is rampant and that thing still prints money.

MIcrosofts current PC initiative is joke. It's not even a question. They haven't publushed a PC game in years and haven't meantioned the word PC or Windows at e3 at all. (Windows Mobile 7 being the only exception).

Actually, they are activley harming PC gaming through GfWL right now, so...

Piracy reduced? Ha not a chance. In what way exactly is Live reducing piracy on 360 that would be relevant to PC? Go look up the numbers for MW2 torrents at launch. If it is becouse it would encourage people to buy more games online then we are already doing that with Steam and other online retailers, for free. If it is becouse it forces people  to not pirate by having to buy the original version then once again not a valid point since you cannot force this on PC and even games with a serious ponline component get pirated both on 360 and PC.
Achievements exist now in PC games that developers what to put them in. Forcing them into the game for their own sake like on Xbox is not a good idea.
In what way would the developers (apart from ones employed by Microsoft of whom there are very few) be encouraged to make better ports? If anything it will encourage even shoddier jobs since they will start relying on Microsoft during certain parts of the process. What hundreds of games? I guess you could say hundreds if you count all the garbage that gets spewed out, but there are only a few worthwhile titles otherwise that were released on 360 but not on PC, most of them being Microsoft owned/sponsored ... suprise surprise.

How is it not good for the platform?
Because:
(a) Microsoft has a shit track record so far in terms of game support with PC (as many on this thread have mentioned)
(b) Paying for the privilege of playing online with other people on a subscription basis. Why would I want to do that outside of an MMO? Games that need multiplayer already have it and support it just fine for free. Right now there is no one unified service that controlls and dictates our online gaming completely. Why would we willingly WANT to be restricted and censored and controlled by Mycrosoft while online and be forced to obey their rules and even pay them money for it? Live is not a holy grail that solves all multiplayer problems there are many examples of multiplayer having issues in certai games, it depends on developer too.
(c) They like, no they LOVE trying to monopolize shit. You can bet your ass they will try to force their distribution on certain titles and will not allow them to be sold at other digital retailers, so forcing you to buy a game from them if you wanted it.

I think they should consign through Steam. I know it sounds crazy, but Steam is already "The Platform" for legitimate PC gaming. Microsoft could make a nice tidy profit by using Valve's excellent network.

To be honest, I'm not going to get another platform (even if it's made by the same people who built my OS).  I didn't do it for Stardock, and I'm not doing it for Microsoft.

I have Impulse by Stardock as well as Steam but I think Steam is better. It could be a good idea for Microsoft to consign with Steam, a lot of money in it I think.

" Brad,  You are a journalist covering video games, please tell me you agree Microsoft has done everything it can to kill PC gaming (by making their pc gaming services inferior to their 360 ones). Valve and Blizzard kept it alive against Microsofts wishes and now Apple is starting to target gamers.    Games for Windows Live has been pure crap - a halfass port of their console services. They keep blocking develoeprs from releasing games on the PC, in order to get exclusives for console fanboys. Their client has had a very rough history, with way too many bugs. I could go on, but its pointless. Microsoft can only play catchup now, as they've already launched kinect as a 360 device and not a general pc device...  But I'm sure microsoft is going to push back eventually now that Apple is threatening to take over what is left of the pc gaming market. The largest PC game developers, Valve and Blizzard,  are no longer tied to Windows. Mac's are slowly becoming gaming PC's.    And I know so many PC gamers dream of a "gaming os" that would replace Microsoft. I think I had a dream Google made the ultimate gaming linux distro that all the devs embraced 100%... then I woke up... but anyways... "

What the fuck are you smoking? I don't know the last time you looked at the screenshots of SC2 on the mac but it looks god - fucking - awful. As far as gaming is concerned, macs are still years and years away from being comparable. I will agree the valve is supporting the mac, but they only do so because valve loves money and they recognize trends, and right now every tween with their daddy's credit card has an apple product. But we both know, Valve will always be a PC 1st company; and if you think otherwise, then you sir, are crazy.

As far as I am concerned macs will always have Plants Vs. Zombie games, I'm not going to argue that, but it will be a very long time indeed (or possibly never) before we see an outside companies such as Bethesda or THQ putting their games out on PCs and macs, let alone macs only.

"Accurate or not"? What? Whether or not MS put  enough effort into its support of the PC as a gaming platform is actually a subject of debate???  Please interview someone from PC Gamer magazine (or the like) and ask for their opinion on the subject.

Microsoft want people viewing advertisements, in a system MS have total control over, and paying an annual subscription fee for the pleasure. I guess market research shows that PC gamers are less likely to spend €5 on a costume for their avatar, or buy jpegs ( themes) at €3 a-pop.

Yes, I'm a huge fan of Valve's as well, but they release a game every 4 - 6 years, having them on board helps a lot (in terms of bringing quality to the mac) but isn't really them "taking over the gaming market".

Also I should state I bought Plants vs. Zombies not 24 hours ago and have been playing it on my PC ( ;P ) and must say its pretty damn fun as well.

Microsoft don't care as much about the PC as they do about the Xbox.

Why? Because it just boils down to one single reason... Money.

PC games dont make as much money as console games, so microsoft mainly focus on the consoles and give us PC gamers the scraps from the table

Wake up people, pc isn't the only platform with massive amounts of pirated content.

As for fable 3... I was kinda looking forward to it and it's a shame they pushed the release date for the pc version, but then again it's something that we, the pc gamers, have grown accustomed to the "persecution".

Luckily, as oDawg stated, some developer still focus on this platform and despite micro$$oft's best efforts have kept it alive and kicking with quality titles.
