Faction Transfers Coming To World of Warcraft

Maybe a little change of scenery would do your alternate characters some good?

Now if they'd just let me change into one of the dudes from The Lost Vikings...
Now if they'd just let me change into one of the dudes from The Lost Vikings...
Blizzard has issued some early word on an upcoming customer service feature for World of Warcraft. The company is developing a service that, like the realm transfer system that lets players move their characters from one server to another, will allow players to flip their Alliance characters over to Horde, or vice versa.

The news comes from a post to the Blizzard boards that, like anything involving change, touched off an avalanche of comments from people who make like this is going to be the end of the world. Actually, it's a bit more even than the average announcement, as there are plenty of people piping up in there with "cool" and "wow!" messages, expressing a touch of excitement for the upcoming feature.

It's primarily going in to allow players who leveled up characters on the opposite side as their friends to swap over and join up with their posse. But there aren't really any more details about it out there, so we'll have to wait and see what sort of restrictions are applied and how, exactly, it'll all work.

I suspect Mountain Dew will be involved.

That's pretty cool, although since PVP is now cross-server and all endgame raids are in contested territory i dont see how swapping an 80 Tauren Druid for an 80 Night Elf druid is going to really effect your playing style, other than alowing you to hook up with people you know on the same server (unlikely, considering you would probably have joined the same faction as them to begin with).

I dont think this will have any effect on the game at all, especially as it's likely to cost $12 (same as migration)

I don't play WOW anymore and this would be another reason not to return.  I don't know why I care, but this goes against much of what WOW used to be as far as I'm concerned.  A player chose to be either PVE or PVP and couldn't swap - now they can; a player chose to be Horde or Alliance and couldn't swap - now you can.  It's good business sense for Blizzard to offer all this flexibility, but I think the identity a player creates for their avatar is completely undermined by allowing this.  I guess next Horde and Alliance will be able to talk to each other...for a fee.

I don't know if I'd do that with my Alliance characters.. much rather roll Horde characters on another server and get the entire experience of playing Horde. Takes too long, though, but better than just turning into the opposite faction out of the blue. I wonder how they'll treat past regions you've quested in. This might be the ultimate choice for people wanting the 3000 quests completed achievement, though...

Seems kind of pointless to me, in the end.

I really don't see why not. Sure it fucks with the idea of loyalty and stuff, but honestly, I don't think it'll make that much of an impact on the average 13 year-old WoW player.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, from day 1 I have wanted to play as a High Elf in WoW, but High Elves have never been a playable race. Well okay technically the Blood Elves are High Elves, but there's a cultural distinction between the two, which is made pretty clear in Wrath with the High Elf faction from Dalaran and the Blood Elf faction. If this little faction switch will let me take my preexisting character and switch factions with them as they are then I may return to WoW thanks to this since a Blood Elf in the Alliance is the closest thing we'll ever get to a being able to play a High Elf. However, on the other hand, the faction division is rooted in spreading out the player base so the game doesn't become to laggy. If they allow you to do this I can easily see most people on a server switching with their existing toons to the already larger populated faction and then things would be a real mess. I don't want the entire game to play like the laggy Wintergrasp battles and I would hate to see one side of the game totally dead, because then that part of the world would feel dead and empty and it would totally ruin the imersion. However, if you have to change your current character to a race of the opposite faction then I just can't see this really taking off since most people pick the race they do for a reason, which is usually that they don't want to play any other race.

To be totally honest i guess this feels a bit ... tacked on. It's a great idea most defo - alot of people with benefit without having to reroll ( even with the BoA items, various buffs and the recruit a buddy triple exp helping u  -.- )  so yeah thats pretty cool. Though being an older player of 3/4 months after release ... it was such a huge decision back in the day choosing what you looked like, your name, faction, server ... but now u can just throw money at it ( like any good plan :p ) and it's rectified pretty quickly. To be more negative it just helps the gold sellers n' ninja looters shift around even easier!!

Though ultimately i see what Big ol' Blizz are tryin'  to do.. it just feels like they have my 10 quid on a string, slowly yanking away at it as they giggle back to their HQ.

Actually regarding Gerstmann's comment about Lost Vikings:

From the sound of things you could roll a horde, farm the in game Lost Vikings for all theiriconicequipment.
Then transfer into alliance dwarf. Or do it three times if you are really nuts and want a whole set of vikings...
So yeah.

@VaultDweller13:  From what I remember, it's only on pvp realms that you can't have a character on each side.

Emotional responses aside I think this is a good feature addition for WoW players. If a realm is lopsided they could add incentives (or not charge money) to tranfer to the minority faction. This is a good thing.

I still won't ever play another MMO again, Blizz can dangle that carrot on a stick somewhere else. 'Nuff said.

"

After reading that, yeah this seems like a good idea,
but idc because I don't play WoW.

From the post: "into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction"
Meh. And here I thought my Tauren could finally join with his friends in the alliance.

"So if you play a human paladin, you’d only be able to change to a blood elf paladin. "
Wait, what. That makes no sense at all. If so then I like my idea of rebel characters better. If you play a human paladin, you should play as a human paladin. But you'd fight for the horde instead. It's not that hard. To have your character magically turn into a blood elf is just silly.
