Far Cry 4 Is Coming

Ubisoft has confirmed the inevitable, and it's headed our way later this year.

Not only was Far Cry 3 a big success for Ubisoft, but it was a pretty damn good game, too. It's why we're getting Far Cry 4 later this year, confirming longstanding rumors of another open world sequel.

No Caption Provided

Ubisoft stealthily announced Far Cry 4 as part of its financial results today.

The game, which takes place in the Himalayas, is scheduled for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 18. We'll most likely see much more of Far Cry 4 at E3.

The company revealed a little bit more about the game on the PlayStation Blog today.

"Of course, you can expect the same unique, open-world gameplay that has set Far Cry apart from more traditional shooters. Far Cry 4 will be set in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous, and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic, self-appointed king. This is not your standard FPS. You will be equipped with a vast array of weapons, animals, and vehicles, and our highly detailed and interactive open-world will let players write their own story across an exotic and varied landscape."

For now, let's all gaze upon the amazing art for the game.

If I had to take a wild guess at the plot, I'd figure the guy in the suit to be some kind of triad affiliated psycho who are subjugating and enslaving the mountain natives and you're some plane crash survivor who ends up becoming a hero of the downtrotten, getting visions of Buddha as you descend into madness and then get murdered by the end... But that's just a wild guess.

What a weirdly timed reveal, sneak reveal during a financial conference call just screams a major fuck up in the scheduling for ubisoft games atm. Marketing doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the amount of games they churn out and delay.

I sincerely hope the writing is better this time. Far Cry 3 started out good, but went to crap as it crept closer to the ending. It's a shame, since the gameplay was great. Easily some of the most fun I've had with an FPS in the last 5 years or so.

I wish that I didn't have a suit nearly identical to that.

I loved Far Cry 3, but I only got a few minutes into the 2nd island. The forced stealth mission to get on the boat sucked, and I lost my save right after that (the whole profile got screwed up). I feel like I got what I needed to out of the game. I should start it over and finish it one of these days.

Hopefully the characters aren't shitty. I had trouble caring about anybody in FC3. Vaas cool, but that personality will only work once. I picture the antagonist in FC4 being much more flamboyant.

Definitely interested. I'm curious how it's going to look while having to still play nice with last gen. Is there a Dunia Engine 3, or will they just have it look the same. Far Cry 3 is pretty enough that I wouldn't mind if the visuals stayed the same. Maybe tweak the old engine.

That's not to say this game is inherently some horribly racist thing based solely on this one piece of art of course, but you should understand how the imagery could raise some eyebrows. It's a rich-looking white guy smirking while holding down a desperate looking foreigner who's holding a primed grenade. It reads like parody of anti-terrorist propaganda.

I mean, it's totally possible that they're going to do something smart and subversive, but I don't trust the history of the series enough to give them the benefit of the doubt on that front. I'm guessing it will still be a super fun open world game either way though, and I'm pretty exited.

But isn't the image of a smirking white man looking down on a foreigner holding a grenade while he dangles the pin on his forehead what you would call smart and/or subversive?

And who should the protagonist be then? Someone from the region? That would not be interesting. There's no need to explain the world if you live there. Should the villain be Himalayan? Surely that would be worse.

It just seems like typical outrage manufacture to me. I don't see anything racist whatsoever in the art, it seems like a HUGE stretch.

No, that image isn't smart or subversive in any way. It's literally a rich white dude sitting on a "throne" holding a position of power/threat over a person of color. It is literally a representation of the status quo, it's not subverting anything.

@kentonclay has a point that it's entirely possible the actual game will play out in a way that's not as awful as the art makes it seem, but considering that the racial tones of Far Cry 3 (and the writer's insistence that "you just don't get it") were the biggest problem that a lot of people had with it, it's pretty shitty of Ubisoft to have this image be the first impression of the next game in the series. Anyone who had a problem with the story and characters in the first game are not going to suddenly believe that "oh, THIS time they'll get it right."

Remember people, it's only okay to show people of the same colour gender income social-class doing potentially mean things to each other, or else it's racist/classist/whatnot.

..No seriously, if you think that shit is racist, get the fuck off the internet, there is no chance that's an evildoing person kneeling and the goodguy took power over him right? It's gotta be racism right? You're not making an ironic hipster joke right? Pull the plug on your computer and then your life, the rest of us will be better off.

Hey man you seem like a pretty reasonable guy, let's hang out.

I don't normally play ubisoft games because of uplay coming ontop of steam, but if steam doesn't get its shit together soon, I might just go straight to the source. The uplay store seems to have all the big games and not all the indie trash.

If that guy is supposed to be Asian, he is the most Caucasian-looking Asian man they could possibly have depicted, and the implication behind that choice would still be pretty obvious anyway.

Man do I hate it when the villain is the main focus of pre-release stuff for games. Hated it when Borderlands 2 did it, hated it when Far Cry 3 did it, probably gonna hate it when this game does it. I mean, they're already talking about him. Not the main character or anything, no, the bad guy. And I'm assuming that's him in the artwork. Ugh. I dunno, it just comes off as totally dumb, and they always have the exact same personality.

But whatever. As long as it has stuff to hunt and and water for me to be afraid of, I'm game.

I feel as though you have made a very good guess based off of the artwork given.
Fingers crossed though that there is a lot more to it.

I cannot imagine that the implications of the art are anything but intentional on Ubisoft's part. I'm going to go ahead and assume that the plot will end up being some sort of Heart of Darkness-type deal.

Um, isn't he the bad guy? I think the idea is that I am going to subvert him, likely with an assortment of fully automatic weapons.

Delicious Double Post (actually about the game this time!):

So long as they don't go the idiotic route of Far Cry 2 and make me run back every half hour to get pills or something, then I'm all for this game. Had a lot of fun with FC3 and, of course, Blood Dragon, so here's hoping it will be a blast.

Speaking of which: I'm going to guess that the villain here (if that is what he is) is going to have someone run through a live minefield at some point. I don't know why, it's just a vibe I'm getting from him.

@vargasprime: I'm no facial recognition expert, but I saw an Asian man sitting on that throne the first time I saw the boxart. He could be of mutiracial decent, hence the caucasian nose (Any one else see it?), which could be interesting as a backstory for the game. But now I'm just adding my own spin.

Also, people can bleach their hair. Like badass Kazuchika Okada.

I see a human being holding dominion over another human being. Far Cry 4 (the video game) will portray you (as a human being) fighting against human beings in order to help other human beings overcome those other human beings.
