Fat List of 360 Install Sizes and Notes

People come together for the greater good, but instead of raising a barn or something dumb like that, they put together a fat list of details on installing games to your 360's hard drive.

It's a hard drive!

People come together for the greater good, but instead of raising a barn or something dumb like that, they put together a fat list of details on installing games to your 360's hard drive.

Seems like the ability to install games to the Xbox 360's hard drive, a feature that was added in last week's dashboard update, has led to a whole lot of confusion and requests for information. A large posse has come together in a few different places in an attempt to answer these questions.

So if you're left wondering about install sizes or load time differences, you might want to start at this NeoGAF post devoted to the topic.

I installed Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts last night and started playing it, and noticed that the game seems to seize up once or twice a minute when it saves your game. Not sure if that's related to being installed or some other strange issue, but I guess I'm going to try deleting the install tonight to see if that helps.

Still don't get why Halo 3 would suffer rather than benefit from all this. I also installed Nuts and Bolts but haven't noticed any issues so far.

It says for some of them what installing it actually does.

How the hell are the arcade collection discs 3GB? Aren't those discs just a few XBLA games on one disc? How can that take up over 3GB?

I have been having so many problems with the new NXE.  I think it may be because I am living in Wales and its making everything fail.  The guy who wrote "1st" also must live here.  EPIC FAIL.

I installed Fable 2 on the day NXE came out and almost had a heart attack as it ate up all my HD space, and that was after deleting one or two demos too. Guess with this update you're gonna need the 120GB HD!

I have a 20gb HD so only 1 game at a time for me (Fable, is my game of choice).  I looked at getting the 120gb today and here in the UK it costs about £100, I am now thinking I would be better buying the 360 Elite for £250.   Oh Microsoft , why would you do this, i am going to have to buy either a new 120gb HD or a 360 elite.  There is a third option, you know Microsoft, you cou release the 120gb herein the UK for about the £50 that it is acctually worth.   Ohh well Elite here we come, the kids will be happy they get a 360 , me I get that knowing stare from my girlfriend that clears the purchase.  We will both be shopping tommorow.

I don't see what the big deal with these installs is.  If it benefits the game, fine, but I'm not gonna install just so my Xbox 360 will "shut up".
Honestly, how long has everybody been playing disc-based game consoles where they're sincerely THAT bothered (or spoiled) to listen to the disc spinning in the console?

Well, it won`t give the PS3 any edge since xbox games have had achievements since launch . Besides X360 has a larger number of games , a better price and a better online system, so far the edge is microsoft's.

I think it's all worth it really, even if it doesn't drastically improve loading times, a quiet, stable 360 is very nice. I went out and spent some serious cash on the 120GB because I knew I couldn't handle only having one installed game at a time and I think it has been worth it so far.

I installed Left 4 Dead in hopes that the shorter load times will help me get first pick on the character I want.  To be honest though I'm not sure if the load times on it are shorter at all.  I also just installed GTA, that intial load has always been killer in GTA games so anything to shorten it is fine with me.

You don't have to delete the install, you can just play it off the disc.

It doesn't install Crackdown?! I'm offended. But then again, I'll probably never play that gem again.
Installed Gears 2 on day one, mainly to circumvent the problems of my crapped-out disc drive while playing online.

Should my mind be blown that the Xbox Live Arcade Compilation Disc is nearly 6 gigs?  What are the odds some of that is anti-ISO filler?

Anyway, enjoying my new 120GB fo sho.  It's practically an investment when I consider how many disc-read errors crash certain games.  Less wear and tear overall on the box.

As for why Halo 3 is worse, simple: optimization (ie: smart programming) and parallel access.  The same reason you don't want a Photoshop swap file on the same drive as your OS swap file.  The same reason you don't try to copy multiple files off a DVD simultaneously.  A drive works faster doing one thing at a time.

It's almost funny how because the original Xbox had a mandatory HD, that its loading times were consistently better, with every game able to use a cache and swap file.
Hopefully the next 12-24 months of 360 releases get even slicker now that MS is promoting hard drives to Arcade owners.

Installed Fallout 3 to the HDD, but i havent really noticed any difference so far. I still prefer to play it from the HDD though, since then i don't have to hear the DVD drive work like crazy, and i'll always be worried about it breaking down.

I only have the 20gb HDD though, and i wanna pick up the 120gb one. The problem is it's horribly overpriced here in Sweden, so i'm waiting for something to happen with the price before i pick one up.

I couldn't care less about installing to the HDD. One, the whole idea of spending a bunch of time researching how-to's and waiting for the files to copy over is silly. I saved two seconds and the expense of fifteen minutes; a genius, I am. Two, my 360 sits right near my computer and my computer's side fan is ever so slightly softer than a 360's whirlwind of a disk drive. Seeing as I've gotten used to, and actually embraced, the sound of spinning mechanics, the idea of making my hardware quietier is... well, one I would literally lose sleep over.

Come on, something has to block out the sound of traffic outside while I game, right?

Besides, my 360 HDD isn't big enough to hold all my games and it will just feel puny compared to the easy loading applications of xFire and Steam, that it's not even worth the hassle.

I think some people are getting confused as to what the purpose was for these installs. Not so that the game would load faster but so that the core temperature would lower due to the drive being inactive while gaming - It was motivated by the 360's reliability issues.

Off-topic: Does anyone know why my pichachu hitler icon won't upload? Also, any word on GB adding signatures to this forum? Its hard to identify some people when browsing.

I have to say i feel sorry for 360 owners in the way Microsoft force you to use their own HDD drives, at least with the PS3 you can use any 2.5" SATA HDD drive, i currently have 320GB in mine and it cost me less than half the price Microsoft ask for their messly 120GB.
