Final Fantasy MMOs To Go Online Again March 25

Square announces that service will resume at the end of the month.

If you’re a Final Fantasy XI or XIV enthusiast, you’ve no doubt taken note of the server takedowns as a result of the earthquake and conservation measures in Japan. Square Enix pulled the plug on both these MMOs on March 13, and it looks like both will be up and running again as soon as the end of this week on March 25, according to a recent posting on the official Final Fantasy XIV blog.

The announcement mentions that even though services will again be offered on this date, it’s completely possible that Square will power down both games again if conservation needs arise. Also, in case you didn’t know, no one is being charged for service in April as a result of all of this, as was originally noted by Square when it announced the initial server pulls.

“We at the Square Enix group are trying to act in a proactive manner in order to provide support towards the relief and restoration efforts in the face of this unprecedented disaster while providing reliable service to our customers,” Square wrote on the FFXIV site yesterday afternoon, “and we thank you for your understanding and support.”

The first FF mmo is fine. The second one is horrid. I would love to go back to the fist one if they gave us some nice updates.

I only played a beta of FFXI on the 360. It just seemed super boring, and I didn't know what was going on. Then I went to go play WoW.

He could've said tomorrow rather than "End of the week/month" lol. But yeah never heard anything positive about this game. A shame because Square Enix seemed to have put a lot of effort into FFXIII and FFXIV and 13 is considered one of the worse RPGs in the series and 14 easily the worse of the two MMOs.

I hope they can get a foothold in the current generation of consoles before they change again and are left behind spending years and millions for relatively little payoff compared to the bigger western efforts.

Should have just said that XIV was an unfortunate victim of the earthquake and is lost forever. FFXI was great back in the day, I played it enough to make a, erm.. couple grand when I decided to move on from MMOs.

I thought this article was going to be news about some major change to FFXIV.  Still though, this is good news to hear.

Yeah, I don't see why anyone should have a problem with this.  If they do they should go check out some footage of the the earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

I put a good 2,000 hours into a character in FFXI, and I'm not sure I could be paid to go back after playing MMOs that don't hate their players.  :)

@Sayishere: Complaining is bad, but being judgemental of those who do isn't helpful. I'd rather see comments about supporting japan than ones about how people should be more caring, especially if there aren't any comments that are uncaring.

Yeah, but they have admitted it was garbage and letting it stay free-to-play until they essentially rebuild it. I actually bought it just before the... um... disaster because of how well they are owning up to the game's mistakes and the new producer's openness about it all.

It's certainly a more pleasant attitude than SE has had in the last few years.

I'm actually playing and enjoying it.  But if you're thinking about starting now, I'd suggest waiting a few more months.  The game is currently undergoing massive changes, which include both little things (mob sizes and distribution, adding synthesis recipes, etc.) and large (changes to the user interface, class balancing, changing abilities, changes to the market wards/addition of an auction house, and the addition of a ton of content).   The feeling is that no one -- not even the development team -- knows exactly what the game is going to look like in 6 months.

The truth is that the game was released in an unfinished state.  Several of the features were pretty broken, and there just wasn't much to do.  But they're very aware of how disappointed people were when the game was released, they've admitted that the game wasn't up to par, and now they're trying to fix it.  They're releasing about 2 patches per month to fix the bugs, make it more user friendly, and add content.

The game is getting progressively better.  So if you're not sure, I'd suggest waiting a couple more months before starting.  I'm playing now because I'm enjoying it and I like the idea of having a full character ready for end-game content when it arrives (and no monthly fee).  But if you wait a couple more months, I expect the game will be better than it is now, and you'll be more likely to enjoy it enough to stick around.
