Final Fantasy XIII in 2010

If you don't live in Japan, you've got more than a year before you'll be playing Final Fantasy XIII.

2010. Deal with it.

It seems like I've been hearing more and more speculation about the various international release dates for Final Fantasy XIII lately, though Square Enix president Yoichi Wada set the record straight in a financial call in Tokyo today. After revealing that the Japanese game publisher has been thus far unaffected by our Current Economic Situation, Wada stated that FFXIII would be hitting Japan in 2009, though the rest of the world would have to wait until April 2010 or later. No specifics about the relative release dates for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions were given.

This seems pretty well in line with how Square has launched past Final Fantasy games, though considering the company's publicly stated agenda of wanting to court both Western developers and players, I find the release gap a little bit surprising. Of course, if you simple cannot wait to explore the gleaming world of Fabuloso Crystal Marvalis or whatever, there's no region encoding on the PlayStation 3, though there's still that little issue of everything being in Japanese.
