If you don't live in Japan, you've got more than a year before you'll be playing Final Fantasy XIII.

Deal with it.It seems like I've been hearing more and more speculation about the various international release dates for Final Fantasy XIII lately, though Square Enix president Yoichi Wada set the record straight in a financial call in Tokyo today. After revealing that the Japanese game publisher has been thus far unaffected by our Current Economic Situation, Wada stated that FFXIII would be hitting Japan in 2009, though the rest of the world would have to wait until April 2010 or later. No specifics about the relative release dates for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions were given.
This seems pretty well in line with how Square has launched past Final Fantasy games, though considering the company's publicly stated agenda of wanting to court both Western developers and players, I find the release gap a little bit surprising. Of course, if you simple cannot wait to explore the gleaming world of Fabuloso Crystal Marvalis or whatever, there's no region encoding on the PlayStation 3, though there's still that little issue of everything being in Japanese.
I read an article on Kotaku, that the game will be released in Japan first this winter. There seems to be a bunch of people here in the states upset. I don't blame them, but they don't remember the last holiday, do they? I really want Square to succeed, and a release after the holidays is very much welcome in my eyes. A midnight release would be more practical after the holidays without the holiday panic in mind.
Smart move on Square Enix, keep this in mind for those who want to see Square continue making kick ass games in the future. First you release in Japan this year, Winter '09. Then create a hype here in the US making us so want the game. Then release in February 2010, bypassing the Holiday cluster-f*ck, and beating the massive spoilers released on the "Internets". Max sales, happy fans, and happy for the game business. Sales (pays the bills) = success and not the scores and reviews(doesn't pay the bill). Good plan?
UGH!! I wantedto play a new FF for the first time this year. But I guess I'm going to have to play all there old stuff until they release 13 and Verues.....whenever that comes out.
exactly Groobmaster, PS3 owners can thank MS for this wait, i'm pretty sure that otherwise we would've gotten it at the end of 09. My question is, does anyone remember if they said at E3 that it would come out the same time in america for both systems? I dont understand why they wouldn't just release it for the ps3 when its done and then release it for the X-Bawks when its done. hmm maybe MS had some stipulation...
Ah well, it'll give me time to actually finish Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Fable 2. Not to mention all the subquests I've still gotta get done from FFXII......
Square always do this. Every single time! And yet evey time I find myself believing their deadlines. Why?
Oh, well. I'd hoped it would be this year. I'm still waiting for another really great (proper) FF game. I've been waiting since after VIII. Guess I won't know until at least 2010.
i want my FFXIII now damit. i wonder whats up with the lack of a international release. must still have them semi-crappy american voice overs to do. SIGH.............
This s! but im not really suprised, even since they started with the talk about releaseig this on the Xbox360I have been under the thoughts that something like this would happen. As big as this game is, it would be pointless to release it onto the ps3 like a year before the 360 so I guess its just a nice strategic plan from MS and Square to hold onto the launch in USA and Europe 'til its ready to be launched on the 360 aswell
^^^ Considering that Japan isn't getting a 360 version (so far), that's almost certainly correct. Most likely they'll use the 4-6 months to polish the port, as well as translate to Engrish.
Typical Squre Enix. Sure it would of been a nice surprise to see it coming out here in the rest of the world at the same time, really not that shocking that it wont be.
Although I'm disappointed that FXIII will not come out this year, I would rather wait until 2010 for a polished game, than get a half-baked one in 2009. Notwithstanding what Wr Wada said, given the Current Financial Situation and the profitability of the FF franchise, I'm sure Square Enix are doing everything they can to get this game out as quickly as possible.
Square Enix!! This company already fucked me up the ass without lub by taking away the exclusivity of the title and now this..SCREW IT!! ALL I NEED IS ONE GAME TO OWN AND IT WILL BE OUT JUST IN A MERE MONTH....STREET FIGHTER IV, BABY, YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no problem waiting if the game will be better. Anything to keep it from hitting the mediocre levels of the last crop of SE RPGs (excluding the excellent remakes on the DS).
"This sucks for waiting, but I'd rather take a polished Final Fantasy game than a rushed product and be disappointed. Looks like they're heading for Blizzard Entertainment's way of developing games; release it when they feel like it (i.e. when it's done and ready).

I agree, true SE has done this in the past, but they've came out with a good product in the end and I'm sure FFXIII will be awesome.
There are alot of games to play until then, so I'm not worried at all.

I'm waiting for the next FF since 2001. After that Square did Barbie Girls and the Star Wars RPG with a girlish looking guy that even didn't knew why he was on a quest.
