Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta Postponed

Square is putting its top men on some "critical bugs."

You didn't tell your office that you were "sick" this morning, right? Throw on some pants and redact it. The Final Fantasy XIV open beta will, in fact, not be launching as Square Enix said it would this August 31. The dev team has spotted a few "critical bugs" in the game and the test has been pushed back as a result.

The news that things weren't going as planned comes on the heels of the beta sign-up site going down for a period of time. When it came back, Square Enix left a message stating that the open beta test was being "postponed" for an unspecified time. It also noted the confirmation of said critical bugs (via Massively).

Plans to hold an open beta are still on, apparently, since Square Enix wrote that "a new schedule will be released at a later date." And chances are you'll be hearing about that new date rather soon--the full game launches on September 30, after all.

I can be patient, looking forward to this one.

Let's just hope they  get it right this time.

oh for fucks sake

Posted by Matterless

Wow. They sent me instructions on signing up at 3 am today. :/
Posted by plop1920

Wow I wonder how long the beta will be with the game being released just weeks away
Posted by m1k3

not surprising. almost every MMO has some kind of hiccups before, and even after, launch.

Top men.

Waiting for the PS3 version anyway. Glad they're working out the kinks.

Must've been pretty last minute, I got an email about the open beta sign up process this morning. Still, I suppose it's better for them to pull it and hammer out those problems rather than launch it and have it fall apart on day one.

I've been in the closed beta for awhile. Don't get your hopes up guys, this ones pretty bad.

Posted by ChrisTaran

This game is awesome. Can't wait for more to get to play it!

Posted by scarace360

O well its an mmo its understandable

Posted by NowSayPillow

Not happy about this. I was hoping to get a feel for it before the game comes out.

Posted by Stealthcake92

Not interested in this at the moment, but was looking forward to trying out the Beta to see what it's like.

Posted by Jayzilla

is anyone actually shocked that square postponed this or anything for that matter? i guess i am fortunate as i have no desire to play this.

Posted by Diamond

Now I'm starting to thing this will be the biggest MMO trainwreck so far.

Posted by Spekingur

I just want to play this because of the pretty CG ladies.

@Mrskidders:
Me too.  Love the FF games, but missed out on XI.  Did you did you play XI?
Posted by McQuinn

Well, it is a final fantasy game. If it didn't come out late, it wouldn't be a true fantasy.

Posted by SniperXan

I would love to see the guys do with this open-beta like they did with STO. I'm excited to see what SE has done with the core FFXI gameplay.

Posted by Sign

Looking forward to this game, but would gladly pass up OB time if it means they can have a smoother release.

Posted by Innovacious

Was in the closed beta. Never actually got to play it though. Got bored of trying a while back. just gonna wait for release now.

i think APB took that already.

I will bet anyone anywhere 1000000 dollars that game doesnt come out on September 30.

Isn't bug spotting the point of a beta?

Oh right...beta's are actually beta's anymore.

Posted by Xeiphyer

Oh MMOs... =P

Well, its better that they acknowledge the bugs and are prepared to postpone the open beta last minute rather than just ignoring the bugs and pretending they aren't there. Sucks for those that want to play the beta but hey, its better they do this now, rather then when you are paying for it.

MMOs... ALWAYS better late than buggy.  Good call.

Good to see some FFXIIII news... oh wait.

Though my interest in the game is fading i still haven't canceled my order.

Their business decisions as of late-- maybe development decisions-- are highly questionable.  I am not sure how they expect to fix these "critical" errors, hold an Open Beta, and then release it in 21 days. Although, Funcom released Age of Conan in a rather buggy state, maybe SquareEnix will do the same. If Final Fantasy XIII was any indication of their waining track record, I would expect them to put a little more pride in their work. Possibly even delay the game until October. Do some extensive bug testing/play testing, hold an Open Beta, and then release it around Halloween-- I know they have they money. I haven't bought a Final Fantasy game since IX, and even that put a sour taste in my mouth. Maybe they are only interested in seeing the money signs and figures.

... I'd give my left leg to get Sakaguchi-san back at SquareEnix. Ok, maybe a toe.

If Final Fantasy 14 is anything like Final Fantasy 11 in terms of game play, expect it to be very slow paced with mediocre writing.

To be honest, based on my previous experience with Square's Final Fantasy MMOs I'm not excited for the beta at all.  I'm putting my money on Bioware's The Old Republic.

Anyone download the setup wizard on the open beta site, yet have it crash instantaneously once it was installed? just wondering if that was one of the critical bugs or my computer being hilarious again.

This is a demo, not a beta. Come on Square, a "beta" less than a month from the release date isn't fooling anyone. ...Well, maybe it is, but not I! No sir... I see right through your devious ruse!

It's a "beta" if there are still "critical" errors. New to MMOs and testing phases?

@MajorToms:   Well, I am not sure if it's the same error, but it looks like there has been a false positive freaking out some antiviruses. I am currently using MSE, and its the same error as the others I have seen on some threads. It gives a three line numerical error which crashes the updater. The easiest fix is disabling the antivirus just for the update. Don't worry, it's just a false positive-- not sure if it's just MSE, though. Running a full scan after the installation will reaffirm the fact that MSE was being overly careful.

Too bad, I was looking forward to setting up my game name and server for the final version just in case closed beta members don't get that same privelage.

They've done a really good job listening to feedback and making very quick changes to the game's mechanics over the past few months of closed testing, so I'm still sure the final version will be as fun as my time in the testing has been.

It'll still be buggy

Posted by NuDimon

Guess they need time to polish the open demo! d;

if it's anywhere near as poor as 11 it can stay in beta for all I care.

Posted by xyzygy

Square must have realized that the game is horrendous, and are just buying some time to get a few more blind pre-orders in.

Posted by PixieNinja

The open beta is due to commence on 1st September at 19:00 PDT, otherwise known as 2AM tomorrow for those of us in the UK.

LOL, I feel that there will not be a beta at all. If the game will launch in 30. September, then when there will be time for open beta?

Patience. I hope it's worth the wait though. I look forward to playing.
