Five-Fret-Button Discount: Rock Band 3 is Now $20

You're welcome.

If you're one of the many post-plastic rockers who, feeling a distinct sense of music genre malaise after so many years of clicky guitars and downloadable Miley Cyrus songs, found themselves unable to muster enough excitement to go out and purchase Rock Band 3 when it hit stores last year: congratulations. Your indifference toward one of the best games of last year has led to a tremendous discount for everyone. Way to go.

Harmonix today announced that going forward, all game-only copies of Rock Band 3 will be $20 at all major retailers, including the usual suspects like Amazon and Walmart. GameStop will probably get with the times eventually, but as of now, they're still selling for $49.99, because GameStop is jerks.

Incidentally, this new price puts Rock Band 3 $10 below the current retail price of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, a game that, despite being by all accounts dead, still continues to produce new DLC. Sort of like the part of the zombie brain that remains active and instinctively hungry for your money long after any identifiable humanity has ceased to be.

The disc part of this equation could be yours for the mere price of $19.99.
The disc part of this equation could be yours for the mere price of $19.99.

All Rock Band instruments are still sold separately--and appear largely undiscounted at this juncture--but with all the extra money you're not spending on a disc, maybe you can pony up for a keyboard and some brand-new downloadable Grand Funk Railroad and/or Joy Division songs. Or perhaps you could make up the difference with cheap copies of Green Day: Rock Band and one of the Rock Band Country Track Packs, each replete with exportable tracks. You'll create a playlist that's bound to confuse the hell out of everyone who attends your next Rock Band party, to be sure.

If you don't own a copy of Rock Band 3, or know someone who doesn't, now seems like the perfect time to get yourself or your stingy cohorts in on one of the best music games of all time. And I'm totally not saying that because I used to work for Harmonix, the developer of the Rock Band series. It's not like my name appears in the credits for that game, or anything. Who in their right mind would let a former Rock Band publicist write a news story ostensibly promoting the purchase of a game in that franchise? The very notion is utterly ludicrous, and not even worth thinking about, if you ask me.

I sort of wish all this fucking music games would die.  They refuse to really innovate and just produce the same shit over and over.  The proof is in the market which is now totally saturated with these styles of games and yet nobody has given a shit for the past two years.  I wonder how many sales are actually made for the DLC of these games now--surely not enough to justify burying all the new and slightly more original content coming out. "
Dude, most of the blame goes to Activision for over saturating the market with Guitar Hero games back when it was at its peak. Harmonix seemed to get the idea and tried to innovate as much as possible. Shit, just look at what they did with Rock Band 3, it was the last hurrah for the music genre as a whole. Unfortunately the damage that was done was too serious and RB 3 was too late to the party. You seem to be generalizing your criticism to everyone in the genre. If it's any consolation, the music genre is in fact dead now.

Harmonix over saturated just as much if not more then Activision. No matter waht anyone says, all those shitty track packs crowded shelves and backrooms also.

You and I know that those track packs were created solely for the people who couldn't or did not want to get the DLC via online. That argument is invalid.

Average customer sees 8 full-on Guitar Hero titles on the shelves: "Geez, how many Guitar Heros are there?"

Average customer sees 4 full-on Rock Band titles, and 4 Rock Band Track Packs on the shelves: "Geez, how many Rock Bands are there?"

I doubt most people would make the distinction.

This game is well worth upwards of $60 just for the quantity of songs for the price; everyone who has ever enjoyed rhythm games should get this now if they haven't already.

Full retail priced games and peripherals is the same thing as a bunch of songs on a disc for a third of the price? Hmm. OKAY THEN IF YOU SAY SO.

Alex, you stopped working for Harmonix. You don't have to shill for them anymore. This article is just a tad too awkward towards the end.

He's not counting them as actual full game releases, all you would do with the track pack is to export it so you can play with it in the core game. You two seem to be arguing about two different things, in terms of shelf space, you're right but they weren't all full priced games that were promoted with their own hardware. They were intended as an alternate way to get the DLC. Instead of releasing a steady source of DLC, Guitar Hero would just release a full priced game each year, sometimes more than one. Also, seriously, man? You're going to insult his intelligence? What is this, Xbox Live? Grow up.

To the average store visitor yes.

Funny how people will play flippy floppy when this argument is relating to Madden or whatever sports games "Why so many!!!" yet when PRECIOUS HARMONIX MUSIC SYSTEMS INC. is brought up it's "NO YOU ARE WRONG THEY DO CARE ABOUT THEIR FANS" with streams of tears rolling down their fat faces.

Just a quick tip to everyone arguing with Methodis; he's still bitter at HMX for closing their Frequency forums years ago and thinks everything they do is to solely screw us. You're all just wasting your time.

I'm still waiting for Rock Band to release in Poland. We had Lego and The Beatles, but no instruments or DLC. Am I supposed to play that with a joypad? Or buy Guitar Hero instruments? Or pay double price for shipping a huge package oversees? :/

I bought RB3 first day with the keyboard, and I'm still glad I did. Currently waiting for a new mic clip for my stand as I broke the last one. Now, if the guitar got reduced there is something I would snatch up in a second.
