Frank West Finds Fortune This Fall

A repackaged Dead Rising 2 starring Frank West instead of Chuck Greene is heading your way.

No Caption Provided
It's a disc, not DLC. Not to cast a dark shadow over this entire product, but that's the number one question people have had when they hear about Dead Rising 2: Off The Record. While one gets the impression that Capcom is holding back on at least some of the information that might make the concept of replaying the events of Dead Rising 2 as Frank West instead of Chuck Greene sound like a more appealing purchase, the initial burst of information doesn't exactly make this sound like a trip worth re-taking.

It's a "what if?" scenario. What if Frank West was the guy that went on the zombie-killing game show, Terror is Reality, right before a zombie outbreak exploded into Fortune City? Well, for starters, Frank's in a completely different situation thank Chuck was. He doesn't have a daughter that needs Zombrex to survive. Instead, he's a fading star, making a living by endorsing baldness remedies, who decides that an appearance on Fortune City's game show might help revitalize his career. After wrestling some zombies (guess Frank's just not into motocross), he discovers the host, T.K., giving keycards and explosives to Brandon, one of the psychos that appeared in DR2. After breaking out his camera and taking some shots, he's jumped by some security guards, and all hell breaks loose, as it did in the previous game.

The camera mechanic appears to function much like it did in the original Dead Rising. You'll snap pictures to earn PP, which levels up your character and give your additional health, inventory slots, and moves, just as before. The photos get tagged with different themes, again, as they did previously. In the first sequence with T.K., it's possible to get horror, erotica, drama, and outtake photos by simply running around the scaffolding and finding different things to shoot. But Frank West's growth isn't strictly built around photography. You'll also build combo weapons, and there will be new weapons to tape together, letting you form new zombie killing tools.

The game was originally conceived as a "Director's Cut" before the team up at Capcom's Vancouver studio realized that what people seem to keep asking about is Frank West. In addition to the new lead character, load times will be improved, hopefully reducing the annoying issue of leading survivors back to the safehouse and having to go through a lengthy load just to drop them off. The developers say that they're taking all of the DR2 feedback into consideration. Hopefully that will result in a better game. Another potential improvement is the inclusion of a checkpoint system that will automatically save your progress at critical points.

Though most of the areas we were shown were taken directly out of Dead Rising 2, there will be new areas as well, including one that "isn't a casino or a mall." Still, it's hard to shake the feeling that most of the game will involve running through those same areas, beating up zombies in a nearly identical way. I feel like Capcom just hasn't shown enough of the game yet to make this make sense for anyone other than the biggest Dead Rising 2 fans out there. It's probably no coincidence that this Fall release is also being pitched as a "fans version of the game." Considering unofficial price listings at retailers are already pegging this as a $49.99 release, I suspect they'll have to be pretty big fans of Dead Rising for this to sound like a deal.

Then again, perhaps Capcom has enough up its sleeves for this to stand on its own. We'll have to sit on our hands and wait for more information to see if there's more to Off The Record than it initially seems.

Woke up with a hay fever today. Still having a hard time believing this is real; it's like a crack dream come true. Did Capcom release their April Fool's joke a few days late?

I was interested in the original DR2, but was scared off by all the mediocre reviews and complaints about save/inventory systems. If they fix that stuff,  maybe I'll actually pick this up.

man, does this ever sound like it's going to walk a fine line between being a new game and just being the same game with a slightly different playable character

I'm pretty excited about this. I'd say it's FAN-TASTIC!

I should add that I didn't play Dead Rising 2.

I didn't play DR2 because the framework of the game (leading survivors, deadlines for tasks, etc.) bothered me.  I'd be interested in this depending on what mechanics they change.

..I don't know, this is clearly wrought over the complaints about Frank not being available in Case West's single player mode, and I would of gathered this is just a tacky cash to exploit that need of the fans.
Reading through it, though, with it having its altered story, new weapons and areas, it could actually be an honourable gesture. At this point, the price is what I'm looking for since even as Frank, this is just going to be a lot more of Dead Rising 2.

EDIT: I missed the price O_o.. so basically £30.. maybe, I guess. I really do like me some Frank West..

Those things in particular are pretty much the core of the Dead Rising experience, as beating up zombies eventually gets dull. Though they may implement the Case West "don't lead survivors" thing, deadlines will almost certainly still be part of the game.

That's pretty much what I'm hoping for. However, if it's otherwise mostly the same DR2 characters, I'm not interested at all.

the hell?? does it come with the original DR2 and the DLC? Is it really just the same game with Frank? Is Capcom really going to dry fuck their audience that hard?

I have a bad feeling about this...i don't wanna hate Capcom but their business practices really seem a bit insulting to me lately.

This sounds fantastic! I always avoided the Dead Rising series because of the masochistic and odd design choices everyone would complain about. It sounds like this is going to be Dead Rising 2 minus all of those annoyances, so maybe I can finally play this series. Thanks Capcom.

Oh Capcom. Capcom. Capcom. Capcom...

Anyway, not that I'll play this unless there's a VERY compelling reason to, but I'd take Vinny's "shared storage" idea over checkpoints. The lack of checkpointing is a huge part of what makes this game the way it is, but hauling around a bunch of useless items on the off chance you'll stumble upon the other one that makes them useful is just sloppy.

Hmmmmm! this is weird i must say...but hey, put the damn mega buster in it, and im sold. Just me, Frank, and the boss killing buster, DR 2 suddenly gets a whole lot better. The trailer is awesome.

(No slight on Chuck, i did like Chuck a whole deal, but then again i liked Case Zero a whole deal more than the main game)

I assume those prices are just the retails guessing and not official pricing from Capcom cause if they want this release to sell they need to price it at $40 or less IMO. I would definitely pick this up if the price is right since I still haven't played the 360 version of Dead Rising 2 yet.

My biggest problem with DR2 was its lack of replayability. I burned through it the first time to get the best ending, and then went through again to save all of the survivors (which was a lot easier this time around). What kept me going back to the original Dead Rising were the insane unlockables you could get like the Mega-Man gun. Unless they add something like that to the game color me unimpressed.

Wouldn't this game make perfect sense for those of us who skipped Dead Rising 2?  Sounds like a better version of the same game.

Though I can't really support Capcom's business model: make game, then rerelease every other year as a director's cut or some other such bullshit.

Maybe I'll try this out after a Steam sale considering I'm building a new PC in June.

This game seems perfect for me, as someone who liked the first Dead Rising, and played Case: Zero and Case: West, but never actually got around to playing Dead Rising 2. I think I'm going to pick this one up, hopefully it's an improvement over Dead Rising 2, and an enjoyable game for someone who hasn't already played it.

@Little_Socrates:   I'm ok with them keeping those core mechanics in the game, provided they make it a bit easier to manage.  They mentioned putting in checkpoints, for instance, which might help out.

Also, if they try to sell this for $60, that's gonna be a problem.
