Game Room Developer Krome Studios Shutting Down

Shed a single tear... and then break an Intellivision.

In the movies, when the local arcade is in danger of shutting down, the community stages a rally or video game tournament that gets everyone excited about about hanging out in front of Vector-based monitors and sit-down cabinets. Thanks to the community, the old arcade can stay in business forever.

But no community rally will save the Game Room arcade. Australian Game Development site Tsumea reports they've received "credible reports" that Game Room developer Krome Studios—not a year ago the largest development house in Australia—is in the process of laying off its remaining staff, after which the studio will be shut down. While there hasn't technically been official word from the studio confirming its closure, an outpouring of Twitter reports from now-former employees of Krome, as well as corroborating comments in the story itself seems to tell the tale for the press release.

You could make the argument that this room represents everything that's wrong with Game Room.
You could make the argument that this room represents everything that's wrong with Game Room.

== TEASER ==Krome--which only recently released Blade Kitten on XBLA and PSN--has already laid off more than 210 of its nearly 400 employees in the past year, shutting studios in Melbourne and Adelaide. Early word from reports, Tsumea says, is that some of those employees will be hired back as contractors in order to finish Krome’s remaining projects before the studio finally ceases to be. There's been no word as to how this will impact the company's increasingly marginalized set of Game Room releases.

Krome's potential shuttering comes after an eleven year journey that saw them become the biggest developer on the continent. Its 3D platformer, Ty The Tasmanian Tiger, is still well regarded as a solid entry in the genre. Following their PS2 releases, Krome became involved with major American publishers such as Activision and LucasArts, releasing games in both the Transformers and Star Wars: The Clone Wars franchises. Along the way, they acquired other prominent Australian developers such as Ratbag and Melbourne House. In a very short span of time, Krome became Australia’s largest game development house.

But, if the layoffs and the success of their projects are any indication, Krome became an entity that was simply too big to support. Efforts to try and reign in the company appear to have been too little, too late to save the studio.

Here’s to hoping the folks at Krome land on their feet. I’d tell you to go play Crystal Castles in Game Room to remember the good times, but that’s not that's not the right way to play that game (no trackball). You could try to remember Game Room for what it was meant to be, instead of what it was, but you really shouldn’t be playing those Dreamcast games on XBLA.

When are we going to see an all-inclusive retro games service like GoG except for ancient consoles/arcades?

Never? Damn... It's all about the money.

Because I've been using sites like VirtualNES (java-based NES emulation) for the very few times I get the itch to check out a really old game, and most of that is only for historical purposes, because these games existed when I didn't have a source of income of my own or rich parents to buy them all for me.

As much as I have enjoyed Jeff's Game Room shenanigans, it's a service that's been dying for months now.

Sorry? Yes. Surprised? No.
I'm buying Jackal next week. I believe it's my 7th purchase. $3 well spent.
There's some kind of Bundle Pack on Marketplace, along with the normal game packs... does anyone know what that's about?  It says it offers a "deal" on two Konami arcade games.  Maybe 2 for $5?  I can't find it anywhere in the interface.

Microsoft's probably not going to let it die just yet. I doubt Krome had much involvement with Game Room post-release anyway.

I think that the quality of the games had a part in them shutting down but the biggest problem was most likely the extreme expantion of the studio. The same happened to GRIN. They got big headed and started opening studios left and right and thats what ultimetly lead them to their doom.

You know, I was just about to write a Bombcast question about why there isn't more active dislike for shitty developers, with Krome as my leading example.  They made the Hellboy game a couple years ago.  They made that King Arthur game, the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger series, the Clone Wars Republic Heroes game.  They made the broken, busted Game Room application that was only really powered by Microsoft buying licenses and setting a queue.  They were around for 11 years and did not produce a single good product.  In such a burgeoning and expanding market, it's remarkable that such a failure of a company was still being handed money.

Sad, and since they are in Australia: sadder. Why do you hate games, Australia?

And I don't think this will stop Game Room. When apes rule the planet shitty 2600 games will still be coming out.

I for one have enjoyed the game room quick looks a whole lot, just to get a glimpse of all the crazy games from the 70's and 80's. It was a nice idea, but it isn't exactly surprising that those games don't hold any commercial value today. It would probably have been better to focus on some better compiled packs of, say, 25-50 games at a reasonably low price. Some of those Intellivision and Atari 2600 games were just laughable by today's standards.

What would be hilarious is if Krome is what was holding Game Room back, then some other studio takes over and pumps out a shit load of emulated goodies.

I was so into gameroom week 1, and by week 3 I was like, but when are the real games coming?

The 2600 and intellivision stuff is so horrid I cant believe they got through. I mean there is no such thing as an A+ game on either system, but outside of Pitfall there was not a thing worth even looking at.

Bummer, I was excited for it to be around a long time and wind up with a pretty awesome arcade.

In the end, it's all been worth it for the increasingly fun but depressing Quick Looks.  Please find a creative way to keep them going for a while, it's my favorite video every week.

Shame, but hopefully this will lead to some new dev houses and a fresh development scene in the land down under. Good luck to everyone effected, I hope they all land on their feet.
