GameStop Playing Hardball Over Retail Steam Installs?

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II vanishes from popular online retailer, insider blames Steam.

No Caption Provided
Relic's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is scheduled to ship on February 19. But you wouldn't know that if you went and visited GameStop's product database. The game's not listed there at all.

It was there, at one point, but with it now totally missing, people are starting to wonder where it's at. Kotaku's Michael McWhertor has heard from a source that GameStop has pulled the game out of its system because the game supposedly requires users to install Valve's Steam client, and GameStop might not feel so hot about selling something that installs a pretty solid digital distribution service that might prevent users from returning to GameStop to spend more money.

Of course, none of that's confirmed. Chris Faylor over at Shacknews seems to think this whole story sounds pretty unlikely, considering the online retailer seems to have no problem selling The Orange Box or Left 4 Dead, both of which also require a Steam installation. Put in those terms... yeah, it does sort of sound like a stretch.

So maybe it's an inventory glitch? Or maybe since this is a THQ game and not a proper Valve release that we're talking about, GameStop is playing super-duper-hardball to send a message to other third-parties: don't partner up with Valve if you want us to stock your game. None of the parties involved in this love triangle of retail excitement have responded to any requests for comment yet, so as of now, it remains a mystery.

Wow.... didn't realize Steam was such a nuisance to GameStop. I hope it will be. I hope their company dies.

I think that The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead were exceptions for Gamestop because they're Valve games. They can play hardball with lower-profile games like Dawn of War 2, but if they tried to not stock something with the kind of hype that Valve games inevitably have, they'd probably just end up shooting themselves in the foot. I'm guessing that they think that Dawn of War 2 is a big enough game that people will want it and not being able to find it at retail will hurt THQ and Relic, but not so big that they'll be losing out on a lot of money by refusing to stock it.

More like a glitch in the system, nothing says they're hiding the game because of Steam.Ā

Hilarious if true. Steam is a great product and that's all there is to it. If gamestop wants to compete with Steam then it needs to make going to a gamestop and buying the game retail a more valuable choice then an easy purchase on steam. A tough thingĀ to do to be sure but that's Capitalism for you.Ā

Is it possible this is due to pre-orders? I believe if you pre-order the game on Steam now or did so before Jan21 you got into the MP beta early. Was this the same for GameStop retail versions? Is it possible they've stopped selling the game due to this deal?

I mean if I had to choose between where to pre-order I'd probably go for Steam since I get instant access to the MP beta than have to wait for the retail version to email me a code or something, assuming they had that same bonus for pre-orders.

Either way I think its pretty dirty of GameStop if this is some game of hardball. Maybe if their service wasn't so shit people would think of buying games there?

If that is seriously the reason that the game is not there....damn Gamestop, and I am speaking kind. Still, i hope not. That would make my "respect" for them seem almost nonexistent.

So they allow other games that require a steam install but not this one?Ā  I think something just screwed up in their system and people are taking this way out of proportion.Ā

Retail sucks I buy all my games off of Steam now days or not at all. I like to keep my games in one place so if it isn't on Steam then I simpy don't pay for it. this is part of my Down with GFWL campaign where I want all developers to eventually force their games to use Steam as DRM and then use it's features instead of GFWL.

Just called a couple of the stores in the area.Ā  Apparently, they're not accepting pre-orders, but they are still going to stock the game...when I asked about the no acceptance of pre-orders, they all just responded with saying 'we're sold out of the pre-orders.'

Gamestop and their underhanded business practices and their sleazy, borderline criminal employees and their overpricing of things and their insistence on asking me if I want to pre-order games and their general complete fucking dogshit company needs to quickly be driven into bankruptcy by a combination of Valve aquiring 100% of all PC game purchases and average console gamers finally becoming aware of how horrible that coroporation is. *spits*

Also, they're incentivising Seam users by offering Beta access to users when I'm sure the publisher turned GameSpot down for the Beta access. I just purchased Dawn of War: Soulstorm today for $7.50 to get early access to the Beta. I was going to get it eventually and the price plus a week of DoW II: Beta early was too good to pass up. If Valve keeps this up, I may just forego PC Retail entirely.

If this is true, and Gamestop thinks that PC gamers will turn to Gamestop over Steam, they are stupid. Gamestop seems to almost have turned their backs on the PC market, while any PC gamer today, has and loves Steam. If it going to be a war between the two, I would think developers would turn to Steam instead of Valve because Gamestop won't turn around, and try to sell used copies of the game.

Neither would surprise me, but I will say I'm happy to hear that Steam is considered enough of a threat that this story is credible. I know well that Valve are a company same as Gamestop, Micro$oft (fuck GFW, by the whys) & every other looking for mo money, but at the risk of sounding fanboitastic (you should have heard me when I realised I prolly couldn't get a refund for GTA IV :p) I think they actually take pride in caring for their product & what real gamers really think about it too. Oh, & Steam forced GFW to be free, that is good.

Of course they are. Ā PC games have no resell value nowadays with DRM, and the used games market is how they make all their money.

I don't see why gamestop would get so pissy, have you seen their PC sections?Ā  They only have half a dozen pc games, plus the only reason to use those stores is for used games, and that's a no go with PC.

Wouldn't surprise me if Gamestop is doing this for a percieved sleight from Relic. The thing is Gamestop has been shafting PC games for years. Christ, the shelf space dedicated to PC games in my local store would fit into my lunchbox with room to spare. Down with limited installation PC games and down with Gamestop's shameful business practices.

Steam does seem pretty eager to sell copies of DoWII. They'er blowing out copies of the last DoW expansion at 75% off and signing up anyone who buys it for the DoWII multi-player beta. Sounds like SOMETHING is going on whetever it is.

It is amazing how many people "hate" Gamestop. You guys kill me. If you know everything and don't want to talk to anyone, hide in your house and never go out in public. The employees are criminal because they want you to pre-order a game that you are going to walk in and buy on launch day. You are so dedicated to the gaming industry yet you don't understand that Gamestop is the largest purchaser of games. The more pre-orders mean more games are bought from the developers. More money in the right places. As far as shitty employees go, find me a retail chain that has terrific employees across the board. RealIy? anyone? I could rant for days on this subject. Bottom line is if you don't like them, don't shop there. They obviously dont need you money. Anyhow. PC games are moving to digital distribution...shocking. If you have a rig set up to play all of the new games, chances are you are going to have a connection speed able to download the games as well. There will come a time when Gamestop ceases to carry PC games (or strictly goes to special order) and I am sure it wont hurt their business in the least.Ā

I noticed on the Gamestop website that the original Dawn of War and it's expansions are available for download. Mabye all this stems from THQ not allowing Gamestop to digitally distribute as well.

As for Gamestop being a poorly run company. People need to realise that they are a business and will continue to do what they do as long as people accept it and continue to give them their money. If you don't like their business, stop shopping there and they will be forced to change the way they do things. Digital distribution will shutter them in a decadeĀ or soĀ anyway. Patience.
