GameStop Pulling Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Off Shelves [UPDATED]

Retailer's response to today's backlash seems to be sending everything back.

An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.
An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.

UPDATE: Square Enix has issued an official statement regarding today's events, basically apologizing to GameStop for not informing the retailer about the coupon in advance of the game's release.

“As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon," said the company in a statement. "GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."

"Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4000 GameStop stores in North America," continued the statement, "or purchase a digital download copy online from www.gamestop.com. “

ORIGINAL STORY: GameStop dominated the conversation today, based on reports the retailer was opening copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC, removing the coupon for a copy of the game through OnLive, sealing the games back up and selling them as "new."

Perhaps for a variety of reasons, possibly ranging from conversations between GameStop and Square Enix to backlash from basically the entire Internet, the company is now pulling all copies off store shelves.

A GameStop employee forwarded me an email (as seen above) sent to every store, announcing the move.

"At this time please pull all Regular PC editions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and place them in your backroom. These will be recalled at a later date.
As GameStop is developing a streaming service in our Spawn Labs Cloud Computing Division, the coupon that was included is for a competing service. We are returning all copies of the PC regular edition to the vendor in agreement with Square Enix.
Any unfulfilled reserves of the Regular PC Edition should be taken care of with the inventory set aside in your backroom.
Please honor any returns with a receipt."

GameStop issued a similar public comment about its original reasoning for opening the games.

"We pulled the coupons because, like all retailers, we prefer not to promote our competitors and their competing offerings and services in our stores," said a company spokesperson. "Unfortunately, the coupon was packed without our prior knowledge."

Both Square Enix and OnLive declined to comment on the matter.

It is this kind of strong-arming that makes us all have to pay retail prices for digitally distributed games. Even Gamestop knows the writing is on the wall, buying Impulse and Spawn Labs.

I love that their reasoning was basically "We removed the coupons because we wanted to."

What about buying used games, people? Don't we need Gamestop for that????
No, we definitely do not. Use Half.ebay.com. I have been using it for like 13 years. Used games are cheaper there.

Doesn't Gamestop own Impulse? That really stinks. I was going to buy Battlefield 3 off Impulse since Origin sucks. I guess now it's Steam or retail. But I hate physical discs.

Whenever I give a wedding gift I include a coupon for the bride to have one free hook up with me. The groom always throws it out before she can get it. What an asshole! That's a $150 value!!!

You know you're dealing with an immature businessman when he'd rather have no money than some money.

The whole internet was after Gamestop's blood, hell, even Ubisoft backed out of its From Dust DRM because of bitching. Gamestop made the right choice, even though they shoulda been WAY MORE DISCRETE. An email saying "Due to content contained within Deux EX:HR that we were not informed about, we have decided to remove all copies from store shelves. You are approved to return your inventory....". Gamestop instead went the worst way about it. Now Gamestop is on fire and people everywhere are googleing "Onlive".

There wasn't much chance of me buying this game from Gamestop. Nor was there any chance in me giving much of a damn about OnLive. GameStop's behavior did ensure, though, that I'll not be buying Battlefield 3 (not that EA is working hard to ensure I look forward to BF3 at all) from them as i consider where to place my preorder. Way to turn off even people who had no stake in either side, GS.

Well, now they just look like a little kid who didn't get to watch the cartoon he wanted, so instead of dealing with what got picked, he turned the tv off and ran away crying.

it's sad they they feel so threatened by OnLIve (because really, is ANYONE using it?), or that they are too proud to admit they made a bad decision that they are just going to return their games.

However, returning their copies IS a better way of handling it than tampering with the product. If only they had done that in the first place...

I'm not one to wish bad on other people, but their original decision (to physically remove the coupons), is one that deserves to have the person responsible fired.

I only go to GameStop because the guys at my store know me and treat me well. They've gone out of their way more than once to get me a copy of a game that they didn't have then, including tracking down a copy of Deus Ex for me earlier today. I'll still shop there out of loyalty to them, but as soon as I move or something, there's no way I've ever shopping at a GameStop again.

They shouldn't have put them on the backrooms. They should have just swallowed their pride and sold what copies they have with the OnLive vouchers. And be more careful about this stuff next time. I think its understandable that they don't want to promote the competition BUT its not understandable the fact that they just decide to put the games in the backroom..

I was done with Gamestop a long time ago. Fortunately i found a small retailer that can get you any game for any platform you might want, all you need to do is ask.

This just cement my choice.

People, do not forget these facts:

1) Steamworks is the only PC DRM that works, and only needs to phone home ONCE to get to work

2) GameStop have tried hard to get rid of Steam implementations and Steam games

3) Search eBay and CraigsList for OnLive codes for DXHR and play a game of Spot The GameSpot Manager!

Valve was smart and plastered this all over the game so consumers would never put up with not getting that code. No one said anything about the Onlive code before this so Gamestop felt like no one would notice if they pulled this out. This would have never happened if the publisher had made this known ahead of time.

Damn, what a glaringly stupid decision by GameStop. They would rather hurt their already tainted image than "promote" a competing service. A service they have yet to even launch.

Ill say it again, I seriously think the reason the PC version is being pulled off the shelves is because SquareEnix is making them do it.  That bit at the end of the email about "as per our agreement with SquareEnix" pretty much says it all.

First good thing this company has done all day. They should have pulled stock from shelves in the first place. It's OK to avoid conflict of interest with services, but it's not OK to repackage opened material as new and rip your consumer base off.

Well isn't this an interesting turn of events. I guess Square was pissed that Gamestop was fucking with its deal with Onlive. I don't know if Onlive approached Square or the other way around but I would assume some amount of money changed hands to secure the deal.

Either way GS is probably after pissing money away with its idiotic business practice. Considering storage shipping to and from the stores that's some amount of money thrown away. It may not be a whole lot of money but these days you don't want to go wasting money on anything that isn't going to raise some level of profit. This is now a loss making exercise, the worst kind of exercise.

Amazon. And get one of their credit cards if possible. Triple points!

Is it really worth it? Been thinking about it, and I don't plan on carrying a balance so the APR doesn't matter.

compare pc games shelf, to gameboy or psp shelf. Just like Alters said you don't even know it's a pc gaming shelf since half of the items are speak and spell games for kids.

If part of the agreement is to also return the Onlive vouchers, I would love to be the fly on that wall when GS tells their employees they have to turn them back in.  How many do you suppose have already been activated or sold in under the table deals?

What's amusing is that the game ties to Steam and Gamestop don't care about that.  It shows what a value they place on streaming as the future of games, a future I sadly will not accept.
