GameStop Pulling Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Off Shelves [UPDATED]

Retailer's response to today's backlash seems to be sending everything back.

An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.
An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.

UPDATE: Square Enix has issued an official statement regarding today's events, basically apologizing to GameStop for not informing the retailer about the coupon in advance of the game's release.

“As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon," said the company in a statement. "GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."

"Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4000 GameStop stores in North America," continued the statement, "or purchase a digital download copy online from www.gamestop.com. “

ORIGINAL STORY: GameStop dominated the conversation today, based on reports the retailer was opening copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC, removing the coupon for a copy of the game through OnLive, sealing the games back up and selling them as "new."

Perhaps for a variety of reasons, possibly ranging from conversations between GameStop and Square Enix to backlash from basically the entire Internet, the company is now pulling all copies off store shelves.

A GameStop employee forwarded me an email (as seen above) sent to every store, announcing the move.

"At this time please pull all Regular PC editions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and place them in your backroom. These will be recalled at a later date.
As GameStop is developing a streaming service in our Spawn Labs Cloud Computing Division, the coupon that was included is for a competing service. We are returning all copies of the PC regular edition to the vendor in agreement with Square Enix.
Any unfulfilled reserves of the Regular PC Edition should be taken care of with the inventory set aside in your backroom.
Please honor any returns with a receipt."

GameStop issued a similar public comment about its original reasoning for opening the games.

"We pulled the coupons because, like all retailers, we prefer not to promote our competitors and their competing offerings and services in our stores," said a company spokesperson. "Unfortunately, the coupon was packed without our prior knowledge."

Both Square Enix and OnLive declined to comment on the matter.

Why wasn't the PS3 version of Portal 2 (or the PC version for that matter) an issue, if this is the case?

Im guessing because Onlive and Steam isnt exactly the same thing.  Gamestop is trying to compete with Onlive not Steam.

I sincerely regret purchasing my copy of Deus Ex from Gamestop, holy shit. The first time I set foot in a Gamestop-owned building in years and they fuck it all up within 24 hours.

The lesson to be learned: BUY EVERYTHING FROM AMAZON ALL THE TIME.

Or Best Buy. Or Fry's. Or Target. Or even K-Mart. Just not fucking Gamestop.

Amazon. And get one of their credit cards if possible. Triple points!

Is it really worth it? Been thinking about it, and I don't plan on carrying a balance so the APR doesn't matter.

Well, I'd say so. I'd never recommend carrying a balance with a store card. But considering I buy nearly all of my disposable income stuff off Amazon, it's totally worth it for me. And as soon as you're given points you can apply them to your order instead of having to use your rewards to get a $25 gift card or something. Double points on gas purchase as well, along with other things.

This is what they should've done in the first place.  Or you know, shutting the hell up and selling the game, but not allowing for such "practices" (i.e. including a coupon for a "competitive system" that wasn't designated beforehand) in the future.

Totally agreed.

While I have to (*GASP*) sympathize with Gamestop if they really had no idea that these promotions were being packaged with the game, the idea of taking that lapse in communication out on your perennially dicked-around loyal customers is as stupid as it is evil.

I guess the question now is whether or not Gamestop will try to lawyer up... To be honest, if they don't, i'll probably be even more disgusted. After all, if this wasn't a question of Square Enix breaking a specfiic, predefined business arrangement, then Gamestop is going to come out of this looking more bush league than ever.

"Preferring not to promote their competitors" just isn't a valid legal reason to sell tampered goods under false pretenses. Just because something hurts business doesn't mean you can just throw consumers under the bus to circumvent it.

The way that GameStop handled this whole coupon situation is likely a glimpse into how they'll handle their own service in the future.

This is what bugs me....people are ripping into GameStop for doing this, but what if it was Best Buy, or Target, Fry's or any other retailer? Don't give me that "They wouldn't do it" because unles you're corperate office for any of those companies...you won't know. Yeah, it's stupid they did it, but if you were in their shoes, would you want to hand business to a competitor? Imagine McDonalds saying "Here, buy a Big Mac and we'll throw in a coupon for a free Whopper from Burger King".

This is what Gamestop should have done in the first place instead of opening the boxes and taking them out. Although every retail outlet in the world will open up a product's box and then re-close it and sell it as new. Boxes get opened, things get taken out and (usually) put back. It's retail.

However I'm really mystified as to why you guys think Gamestop is wrong to be promoting a competition's product in the game's boxes.

Does Gamestop not realize that shit like this is only going to push developers into selling everything digitally via this crazy thing called the internet???   Developers cant lose revenue due to used sales when there is no physical copies of their games. When you treat these developers like shit they will cut out the middle man by moving into selling their product online and you will have nothing to sell at all.   In the future Gamestop will no longer be a company because they are not willing to evolve and are attempting to fight the inevitable future.  Conform to technology and progression to stay afloat or sink like so many companies have before you.  I for one will be glad to see them go.

I'm sure Gamestop will continue to thrive by ripping off 12 year olds who trade all their games in to get the one hot new release they want. Maybe that will change, but it's unlikely.

I believe all those other retailers are selling this game currently and have not resorted to stealing. McDonalds would have complete control over what they put into their big mac boxes, they create those items. Gamestop did not create this product and manipulating the contents as if it belongs to them would only be acceptable if they purchased the product for themselves and were trying to resell it used. This was not the case. By selling it as a new product I believe they've broken the law.

@S3kShun62: Thats a poor argument there. Those other retailers dont have a similar service that they are trying to promote. People are still going to buy a copy of said game in the stores you mentioned and may use the OnLive token as an additional bonus. And those stores wont be losing money to OnLive. Here, Gamestop is looting boxes and taking out additional content out of fear that they wont get that sale from their service. Best solution would to be not to have people steal out of the boxes, but maybe handing out tokens for their own service when it goes live, and let the customer decide what service they would like to use.

People, do not forget these facts:

1) Steamworks is the only PC DRM that works, and only needs to phone home ONCE to get to work

2) GameStop have tried hard to get rid of Steam implementations and Steam games

3) Search eBay and CraigsList for OnLive codes for DXHR and play a game of Spot The GameSpot Manager!

Like this guy?

Checking out the auctions he's sold, quite possibly. Seems he's also put a certain freebie-offer from EA Origin to good use too. What an ugly world we live in :/

It still does not justify opening new copies of a game, removing something that the publisher put in there and then trying to sell it as new, as if it was never tampered with.

This is filthy. There's no other retailer I've ever heard of that rips open new games, movies, or whatever and sells them as new. Not Walmart, Target, Best Buy, CostCo, Sam's Club...or anywhere I've ever seen games sold. This is sleazy and their excuses are horrible.

Also, who the crap is going to use whatever online service GameStop is going to implement? Boy oh boy if I ever did want a business to fail, GS is it.

You know, I really like dealing with the people at the EBgames (Gamestop Canada) That I usually go to, but it's shit like what they have been pulling for this release that makes me want to seek better alternatives. Between pulling PC copies of the game off shelves after opening them before giving them to customers, and not having the foresight to realize that Canada is a freaking huge country, and it takes longer to ship the pre-order codes, I don't know if I'll go back.
