GameStop Pulling Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Off Shelves [UPDATED]

Well, i guess if Gamestop doesn't mind losing all of its retail sales of the game to Best Buy and other retailers, then more power to them.

...why would you buy this game from gamestop at this point? You get a 2nd copy if you buy it ANYWHERE else. Gamestop has a copy that is worth at least $10 less, if not $30+ if you can sell that code. Or keep it and use it. Point is you get another copy of the game with your purchase.

It's amazing how people get so pissed off about nothing. I was at a Gamestop where a couple of my friends work, and all day long they kept getting prank calls about this. Insults, noises, and unfunny 4chan meme's that went out of style 6 years ago.

This is a lot of hoopla for something people can get on Steam or something. This just looks like a reason for people to be angry on the internet once more and harrass Gamestop employees. All amazing friends of mine at this one store.

Square Enix's Eunuch Division must have handled this. Gamestop just opened, took out and subsequently resold, games that have not got the full content that was supposed to be available with them. Grounds for legal action? Hell yes. Who the fuck does that? Gamestop are petty children. Fucking disgraceful to begin with. Square did nothing wrong, Gamestop have fucked with their customers, and are now refusing to stock a game on a platform? 
 
If I were Square Enix, I'd say fuck them, and refuse to distribute Deus Ex, or any product produced by the company in Gamestop. A friendly little reminder not to fuck with my companies products might make them change their tune.

While Gamestop handled this situation HORRIBLY (opening new games and reselling them? really?), I do kind of feel for them in this case. It was shitty of Square-Enix to make it clear to them that there would be OnLive vouchers in the package in the first place. Obviously Gamestop doesn't want to be in the business of advertising their competitors. It's the same reason why EA is pulling games from Steam. With that said, again, they handled it terribly. They either should have pulled all the copies to begin with, or just put up with it and made sure it never happened again.

I'll give you that one, to be honest.

But people should learn to control themselves around people who are just doing their jobs. (Prank callers, etc.)

So it's ok for microsoft to say fuck off with your games people have already seen, but not for gamestop to refuse to advertise for competitors, for free.

Yes, a case of stupidity on both sides. On another note, I have to say I laughed out loud at "Spawn Labs Cloud Gaming Division."

My main problem here is selling opened tampered copies as new. If they have a problem with the contents if the game case then return it. If they really had as problem that should have been their first response, not tamper copies and sell them new. Seriously though....who buys pc games at gamestop... Go to steam our even amazon before that.. Amazon had given me do many random 20 dollar gift cards for buying games from them anyway

I really fail to see how Gamestop is at fault here. From a business perspective, it's absolutely ridiculous to sell a product with a coupon for your competitor.

It's like buying a happy meal and getting a coupon for a free Whopper.

lol, i'm not gonna sit here and play devils advocate, but really? To anybody who says "I'm never shopping there again" Good for you. The only problem with that is that none of you will actually do that. You'll get sick of waiting for your game via amazon, or you'll want the pre-order bonus they have, or some such slop. Then you'll stop in, pick it up, and not think a thing about it again till they do something HORRIBLE like this again. Then, a few months later, you'll forget and go back on Skyrim launch... the joys of idiocy.

What if there would be a bonus disc with behind the scenes material. If the content was cluttered with OnLive-ads and coupons, would GameStop rip it out? Hell no!

Well that's why I don't buy my games at GameStop. You're not getting a new game, it's been opened therefor it's used in my opinion. Also GameStop is the most expensive video game store here in Sweden, $105,6 for a game. For that price I except it to be factory sealed.

This does not affect enough people to actually damage GameStop's reputation or bottom line. Sorry, everyone. Also, even if GameStop corporate is full of goblins, many of them are run by perfectly nice people who hire perfectly nice employees. If you have one of those, support it, as brands may eventually change but employees remain the same.

Man, I miss EB Games.

It's so, so sad to see GameStop have such massive influence and power that Square is even apologizing because they need their business so much.

That's actually not true. Those OnLive vouchers didn't come free - OnLive payed for some of the publication/production cost of Deus Ex HR PC version. Square/Enix shoud've been more careful in not representing/selling the product with a conflict of interest which these OnLive vouchers clearly represent as far as GameStop is concerned. On the other hand GameStop are cunts.

I dunno, I read that "SE invites gamers to...." line as a sly way of saying "If you really wanna buy this game from THESE schmucks, without a coupon you'll get anywhere else, then go right ahead, slutbags." Could just be me though.

Gamestop has a digital store too right? Does this mean that they're also forcibly removing discs from games that use Steam to authenticate?

You know what, as annoying as it is that they are doing this I think that we can't exactly blame them. So much hate goes towards Gamestop, grrr, they sell second hand games that take money from developers, grr they dont know what they talk about in store, grr they just want money.  
 
At the end of the day they are a business and its unfortunate that their industry is super sensitive to this sort of action. In the UK our main store is called "GAME" and that nearly went out of business a few years ago. These are companies that need to make money. You wouldn't see a supermarket sell a loaf of bread that came with a voucher for £30 off at a different supermarket. And the used game thing? As much as it sucks for developers it also brings games to those on a lower income bracket. When I was 13 I couldn't afford brand new games. But I could afford the traded in ones.  But hell who knows. That might come down to the exchange rate and be very different in the US. Whenever the staff talk about a $10 game its never ever sold for a £5 here. Its still £10. Sucks really, but thats a rant for another day. 
 
 Im just saying, yeah its annoying but does this make Gamestop the worst company ever? far from it. 

What everyone here seems to be missing is how much the Square Enix statement is actually a huge flaming, eat a dick type response, wrapped up in diplomatic PR lingo. And the proof is definitely:
