Get Mass Effect 2 PC For Free With Your Purchase Of Dragon Age II

Also, Dragon Age II sold a million and another Mass Effect is coming this year.

Still don’t have Mass Effect 2? Here’s an expensive way to get a free copy of the oft-acclaimed sequel: buy Dragon Age II. In a celebration ending April 30, past and present owners of any version of Dragon Age II can sign up to receive a free digital copy of Mass Effect 2 for the PC. Just head on over to Dragon Age II’s official Web site, hit the rectangular “Get Mass Effect 2 Code” link in the middle of the page, and follow the directions to claim your own.

This is all an obvious marketing stunt that trades exposure for a free game, but to hear Mass Effect and Dragon Age series creator BioWare tell it, this Mass Effect 2 giveaway is simply an effort to reward fans of Dragon Age II since the game has sold over one million copies to date.

There have got to be catches with this, right? Yeah, I've spotted a few small ones. In order to claim your Mass Effect 2 code in the first place, you’ll need to have a valid Online Pass connected to your copy of Dragon Age II. Also, the copy of Mass Effect 2 you’ll receive in return won’t come with an Online Pass, so you won’t be able to access the Cerberus Network (or any DLC) without forking over $10 first. Oh, and also, all of this is done through the EA Store, which isn't the... most popular or solid of services. But otherwise, hey, free game!

God most of you are a bunch of whiny pricks.  For a game that sucks so bad why are they saying it already sold over a million copies and did so faster than DA:O did it?  Second who cares if you have already played ME2?  If you already have it on PC use this to give it to a friend or something if you have the option.  Or if you are like me and don't own the PC version but want to check it out well here you go.

You guys do realize they could have given you, you know, nothing right?  Maybe it is just where I am from but around here "something" in general is considered better than "nothing".

That's a pretty sweet way to get as many Mass Effect 3 sales as you can.

Eh, massive numbers of pre-orders based on the popularity and word of mouth of DA:O and fans of the first one who thought it wouldn't be as bad as other people made it sound only to discover it only has a handful of empty locations, boring loot and combat borrowed from Dynasty Warriors?

Just a guess.

Still, free game. And one that's better than DA2.

Can anyone confirm the bit about having to fork over $10 for the Cerebus Network?  I just entered the activation key the EA store gave me and it took it with no questions asked.  I haven't tried to buy DLC  yet tho.

I wasn't going to bother with all this, but after seeing people put up their codes, that seems like a good idea. All my friends that are into video games already played this, so here's my code.

Ungrateful?  Don't be daft.  It's a sales promotion, no more and no less.  EA spinning it as a 'celebratory gift' doesn't mean you guys have to be naive enough to take them at their word.

It's neither good or bad - it's just a totally transparent sales promotion being pitched as something more than it actually is.

Now who is being daft? How is it not a gift? It's great for the consumer. They get a free game. Are they supposed to say "Oh I don't know about this. I would take the free game but it may just be a ploy to make me buy future products for them so I better not download it because they're evil."

I'm not always in favor of what Bioware does for their games. The signature edition was bullshit and they milk preorder bonuses far too much but I don't see how them giving away a free game to people who supported them is anything but positive.

I'm pretty excited to have the PC version. I have in on 360 already because I didn't have a PC at the time it came out, so this is really cool. Very excited to try out mods and whatnot!

The PC version is pretty good.  You can use more powers without having to use the power wheel which pauses the game.  Seems like a good thing if you were already planning on getting ME2 from EA's site.
I imagine this is an attempt to get people to buy Dragon Age II before the price tanks.  Digital version of ME2 is already just about free so it's not like they're giving away the farm.  And if they get you to install their background downloader/updater and other EA crapware all the better (for them) - trying to get people off of Steam and using their digital distro service.

Article is very much inaccurate!  The Cerberus Network has become included in the package and is automatically given to you when you go to the redeem page again. It just has to be downloaded and patched manually.

Also let's just forget the fact that you get a FREE copy of Mass Effect 2 that's not even account locked and possible to gift to other people. I would consider this one of the best deals I've been given.

@darkjester74:

Read my above comment or go to the forum thread. But in a nutshell: Yes I can confirm you get Cerberus Network since I downloaded, patched it in and met Zaed in the process of five minutes.

Buy our mediocre and slightly insulting game and get the fucking GOTY 2010 for free!

They should be giving away free copies of DA2 with sales of ME2.

If this were a Steam deal I'd probably go for it. Of course if it were a Steam deal it wouldn't have that BS extra $10 fee to get access to other stuff

Why do people think this has anything to do with Dragon Age II?  Yes you get the game for owning a copy but what it really is is a way for them to build an install base on their digital storefront.  Valve has done the same thing, for example, with Alien Swarm last year.

@rjayb89: Well, here's what happened.  I played Origins the first time about a year ago and didn't like it, but I gave it another try about two months ago and I really liked it with a different class.  I wasn't planning on getting DA2 till after I finished, but then I saw that a local video store was selling PC signature editions so I bought one.  Now that I'm about 30 hours in to Origins I'm not sure if I really want more of something similar, I know it's different but most people are saying the changes aren't necessarily for the better.

@Skytylz: Yes, I'm sure you've heard a lot of things about Dragon Age II and how... polarizing it can be. And a lot of these complaints are true and depending on your tolerance of visiting the same places over and over again, you might feel like you're not progressing toward an ultimate goal (something I felt, at least). I'm probably not going to change your mind about it, but one thing we have in common is that we didn't like Origins in our first playthrough until we played a different class much later. Rather than playing through the game as a Warrior, I chose to be a Mage and had fun, but that's not the point.

Things I noticed from the original game to Dragon Age II (DAII) that might entice you into playing the game is that you won't be spending as much time in menus, whether it be to check your journal for quest descriptions or map to figure out where to go because the game purposefully focuses you on a singular path, even the main quest maintains this mantra albeit across three "acts." With Origins, you were given a list of people to request aid from without a particular path to follow leaving it to you, and as a result, made it a difference to how the ending played out. At any rate, the game is much more combat-focused. Would you say that combat might have felt a bit clunky and slower in the original? Most definitely if you compare it to DAII's. Instead of slowing your party members speed when an enemy appears, you actually move faster than you usually move (unless you install that mod I linked for you up there, or last page, whatever).

As someone who has extensively enjoyed the fiction that Dragon Age (in general) has set up from reading the novels (The Stolen Throne so far, in progress on The Calling) to multiple playthroughs of the original to understand how impactful Origin stories could have been for particular characters, I think the story in Dragon Age II fell extremely short. The game centers around a rags-to-riches character who manages to overcome all odds, and while doing so became surrounded by the catalysts, or reasons, why the story happens as it does (sorry for being vague or confusing, I don't want to spoil anything) instead of becoming a Grey Warden and the feeling that you've become the only hope that Fereldan needs to overcome the Blight.

But, mods, dude! Mods! Not very many yet, though.

TL;DR
Things I like:
  • faster combat
  • less time in menus
  • mods (PC)
Things I dislike:
  • what I think is the most important part about Dragon Age, the story, is disappointing because you're given clear choices (less impactful consequences)

It's not like they're handing out a shit-stained washcloth.  They're handing out a copy of what is widely considered last year's Game of the Year.

And I highly doubt EA Marketing people are going to be coming to your house to molest you in the middle of the night.

Just because I don't see the need in attacking EA for giving you something free doesn't mean I'm singing their praises. It's funny that just because some people don't care for EA they immediately say the idea of them GIVING YOU A FREE VIDEO GAME is crap. You don't want the free video game? Fine, don't take it. What if a company that you did like did the same thing; would you call that crap? Probably not. THQ did the same thing with Darksiders when they gave away copies of Red Faction: Guerrilla. Did anyone talk shit about that?
