Giant Bomb Image Moderation: The Home Game!

We're letting our users get in on some of the content approval fun. Find out how!

As Giant Bomb grows, we'll be adding a number of fun new ways for you to interact with the site. Today we're happy to unveil the new Image Crowd Moderation tool.

http://www.giantbomb.com/image/crowd_moderation/

An artist's interpretation
It's basically Hot or Not for video games--you'll be "voting" for whether an image attachment submission should happen, and once a submission accrues enough positive or negative votes, it'll either be approved or denied. So how does this work for you? It's simple!

If you see an image attachment submission that you think looks correct (or "hot") you approve it!

If you see an image attachment submission that doesn't jive (that would be "not," folks) you deny it!

There are some basic guidelines on the tool to help you determine whether an image should be approved or not, but if you're unsure either way, just skip to the next image. Staff and moderators will be monitoring this tool with a keen eye, and we'll also continue approving and denying submissions through the primary queue. In addition to the link included in this post, you'll be able to find the tool under the Help section in the top nav. Keep in mind that this is a brand-spankin'-new feature, and we'll be open to suggestions on how to improve it.

The more people that use it, the more effective the Image Crowd Moderation tool will be, so go on over and give it a try!

Nice stuff, sounds like we're working towards taking some of the workload off the moderators.

Hot!

Posted by snide

Just a note that we will be adding some point based scoring and leaderboards to this tool, but didn't want to throw that in too quickly without some heavy testing (this weekend) on it.

Thanks for helping out guys, hopefully this should put moderation back in the hands of the users where it should be.

very nice

lol awesome dude, shame i can only do it for 4 hours now

Posted by KillerFly

Nice.  Another reason this site is so awesome.

Posted by CharleyTony

Jeff, all those moderation tool, wher do you guys come up with em ? this is just awesome !

Posted by Spiritof

I'm already a bit confused. Are you really getting that many submissions that don't have a caption? Without it I'm pretty confused at what I'm even looking at. It's a cool tool, but peoples need to be giving me at least a small hint at what I'm looking at.

deeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEeeecent

Posted by Vlademir

Awesome. I'll go check it out.

Posted by davecuk

Some of the images appear to be attached to no galleries, I guess these should be rejected? Some also say they already exist how is this checked, by file name and size or what?

Posted by Gditz

Works well so far. Nicely done fellows.

Posted by imayellowfellow

so i supposed we should just make sure the words in bold say " this is a brand image a user has uploaded"

and then of course chekc for correct gallery and watermark free?

Posted by Wei12do

I can see this going wrong but it can't hurt to try!!

Posted by RedSox8933

huh. cool

Posted by JJGIANT

too HOT to jaywalk

Posted by Zripwud

Great idea guys!

Posted by Schizoid

If it says it already exists, that means a moderator has approved it, if you agree with the moderators decision click approve, if you don't then disapprove.

Posted by davecuk

Thanks for clearing that up Schizoid, what about if the image is not attached to any gallery?

Posted by Alex_V

I'm concerned that images for early games which are small by design (eg 256 pixels wide etc) are going to be rejected, even though they are totally legit. We'll see.

Just what I've been waiting for! Thanks.

Posted by Duffy

You should have called it the Bootsy or non-Bootsy image Crowd Moderation tool, lol

Posted by logson

Clever.

Posted by Flexiable

Just what I've been waiting for! Thanks.

Great feature, but... the site is crawling for me right now... :(

Posted by davecuk

Sorry for posting an image here but it's needed really. In the above image you see what appears to be a company image so should be approved, despite it's size, however it shows no gallery etc so how are you supposed to know where the image is going and if you should approve it or not?

Posted by Guild_Master

Great feature, it's good too see how the community can participate, I'll get right to it.

Posted by Barthez

The comments we add to the Image Moderation page can be seen by other people voting on that specific image?

Posted by DavidLeeRoth

Great stuff guys!

Posted by Absurd

Looks like a great feature.

Posted by Miniman

If an image is the same as one already uploaded I guess  with dissaprove it?

Posted by Terra1909

Can't wait to give it a shot!

Posted by MissileWarriorz

good job rolling this out guys sounds like a genus idea

Posted by The_Icon

My only complaint that the site is extremely ..........laggy :(

Posted by VibratingDonkey

But...how are you supposed to know if it's filed under the correct game/gallery etc? You just get a random image and yay or nay buttons?

Posted by MichaelScott

great feature. :D

Posted by Impossibilium

I disapprove of the button that spells "disapprove" as "dissaprove!"

Posted by the_illuminati

This is a great idea, and it's awesome you guys are already rolling out new features for the site.  I'm all for anything that allows users to contribute to the site's development (within reason).

Posted by chililili

We need to know to which galleries it will eb implemented and whether or not there is an exact copy already

Posted by GameFreak315

Absolutely!  Anything we can do to help, I'd be glad to be a part of.  ^_^

Posted by WhytePanther

So when I see an image, and it says "This image isn't new, but the user wants it attached to more places", how do I know what the "more places" are, so we can approve/deny it?

Edit: Seems to be working better now.

Posted by Jatsu

Now as long as I don't stumble on a bunch of spoilers, this should be a nice diversion.

Posted by s10129107

I clicked the link to approve or deny images, but it just gives you a picture without any context.  It says he wants to attach an image to other galleries, but i have no ideas which ones.

Posted by Ilias13

I think it would be helpful to know who the poster is, as well as in which game this image is referring too.

Posted by MissileWarriorz
VibratingDonkey is right how do we know if the image is filed correctly it could be in the wrong gallery
Posted by Scooper

Great fix but I can see alot of kids just hitting 'deny' or whatever on every image, just to be asses.

Posted by DoomFrog

Awesome idea, but as others have pointed out, the tool needs to provide some context (i.e. what gallery is the user trying to attach it to.)

Also, a mechanism for seeing the gallery would be handy as well, so that images that are duplicates of existing images don't get approved.

Posted by astonish

I'm wondering if the "not" pertains to the image altogether, or its association with an article. I have found many articles where there are good screenshots of a game accidentally tagged as two different games. It suits one perfectly, but is altogether incorrect the other...

Great idea guys. I just hope enough people have respect for the great thing you guys are trying to do to take it seriously. You can count on me!
