Giant Bomb's 2013 Game of the Year Awards: Day Five

All things must come to an end. Until they happen next year.

Best Horror Game (Patrick Klepek’s Biggest Scare of 2013)

Year Walk

No Caption Provided

Horror is much like comedy. It’s an incredibly subjective genre that might affect one person profoundly, prompting the individual to scream with fright, and completely bore the next. The best kind of horror elevates past the trappings of the genre, using its ability to manipulate our fears as a storytelling mechanism. Year Walk, one of two tremendous games from Simogo in 2013, pulls this off wonderfully. By wonderfully, of course, we mean it scared the crap out of us.

Year Walk is a game that’s tearing at its own seams, begging you to set it free. You have to rethink what it means to interact with a touch screen, discovering new ways to open this snowy puzzle box. Jump scares are a cheap tactic in the horror toolbox, but used effectively, they instill a level of imagined tension no amount of horrific imagery can match. A simple exploratory game quickly becomes much more, as the player hesitates to move, wondering if this normally quiet game will decide to speak very loudly.

The game even makes tremendous use of the whole idea of "apps" In addition to Year Walk as a game, there’s a Year Walk Companion app, which includes additional information about the world and its mythology. To anyone that’s finished Year Walk, however, you know there’s much more to be discovered, and the unraveling of Year Walk’s true nature is a mixture of terror and delight.

Games That Require Post-Launch Apologies

No Caption Provided

This should go without saying, but somehow, in this, the year of Luigi, it’s a problem. We're used to the idea of patches. In the most ideal of scenarios, patches are great. Games have become increasingly complicated beasts, so much so that even Nintendo, a company that prides itself on incredibly polished games, has been forced to patch the occasional one. But when games arrive so completely broken that patches aren’t enough, and companies are forced to issue several apologies after release, it’s now crazy.

You could reasonably make the argument this should be the “Electronic Arts Games That Require Post-Launch Apologies,” given the company was forced to hang its head for SimCity, NBA Live 14, and Battlefield 4 this year. With SimCity and Battlefield 4, the company couldn’t even be bothered to sound reasonably upset about the experience consumers were having. No, that came later! With Battlefield 4, the first apology even included the company patting itself on the back for having shipped another version of the game! With NBA Live 14, the game was basically indefensible, and EA fessed up right away.

At least those games are still available, though. Ashes Cricket 2013 was released...and then cancelled. It takes a truly heinous piece of interactive software to require such an insane switcheroo. That 505 Games’ apology for Ashes Cricket 2013's complete lack of quality standards felt so heartfelt was welcomed, but let’s remember that teary letter came after they shipped a game it’d happily accepted cash for.

Get your act together, video games!

Ride to Hell: Retribution

No Caption Provided

We don't see a ton of games about bikers around these parts, but if Ride to Hell: Retribution is all the world has to offer, maybe that's not a big deal. Deep Silver and Eutechnyx combined to produce a game that starts out as equal parts hilarious and horrid, but as you get deeper into the action, the slider moves closer and closer to the "horrid" side. It's buggy, glitchy, and twitchy across the board, but it's the bone-dry action, which has you occasionally riding a motorcycle in an unimpressive fashion or attempting to fight bad guys in a decidedly awful way, that drags this whole thing down into the absolute depths.

You might have seen some videos that make Ride to Hell: Retribution look like the hilarious kind of bad game that might be fun for that YouTube channel you've been thinking of starting. But do yourself a favor: Don't play this game.

Best Game

The Last of Us

No Caption Provided

This isn't Naughty Dog's first time in the top spot on one of our annual lists, so in one sense it's not a huge surprise that they've made it here again (and on the same console, no less). But what is surprising about The Last of Us is the extent to which this game departs from not just Naughty Dog's previous, mostly lighthearted work, but from the irreverence and superficiality of most of the video game industry's output in general. It's not that there aren't other games out there that take themselves seriously; it's more that The Last of Us deserves to take itself seriously. It's a work of subtlety and gravity that makes you feel like maybe games do deserve to be regarded with the same level of respect as the best books and films.

The core of the game's triumph is the developing relationship between survival companions Joel and Ellie, and the way their motivations change (and sometimes don't change) as they come to rely on and care for one another during a brutal, year-long trek across a savaged United States. The Last of Us relies on its characterizations to move its story forward in a way few games are brave enough to do, and it's fitting that the tale culminates in a way that's thematically appropriate to the characters and the story, and feels like a natural end to the tale. There's no reason The Last of Us needs a sequel, and that's a compliment. As poor as most video game endings are, The Last of Us sticks the landing and makes it look effortless.

That's not to give short shrift to the game's impressive mix of stealth and shooting. Naughty Dog wisely chose not to reprise the death-defying acrobatics of Nathan Drake here, instead restraining and focusing the gameplay on hard-scrabble survival that's more consistent with the tone of the story and the grim reality of life after civilization has broken down. The struggle for resources, for allies, for safety and some small comfort pervades every moment of the grueling journey from Boston across a large swath of the Midwest. Though you gain more tricks in your survival toolkit as the game wears on, you never feel like you're truly safe from whatever horror lurks around the next corner.

Naughty Dog has proven itself with cartoonish action and theatrical thrill rides in the past, but it was a pleasure to watch their first effort at deeper, more meaningful work. They made an instant classic.

Since some people want the "real" GOTY list, I thought I should share the spreadsheet I've made. It's basically the GOTY list using math. I gave each game a set number of points depending on how well they ranked on each individual list (1 point for 10th, 10 points for 1st). In case of a tie, I used standard deviation. I also made another math list that takes into account how many lists each game appears in. It is more accurate in my opinion as the GOTY list is supposed to be an aggregate.

Anyway, here it is.

I don't really care, as my GOTY (Rayman Legends) is pretty low either way. And to be honest, their final list is pretty similar to both math ones. The only odd game on there is Divekick, as it is nowhere near the top in BOTH math lists, but I guess it's Jeff's Syndicate of this year. You will also notice that NO GAME showed up on all 6 lists.

Kinda weird that The Last of Us ended up winning so many categories especially considering they almost never mentioned it before. But given the events following the game's release, it's understandable.

But yeah, awesome games this year. I am REAAAAAALLY looking forward to 2014 and the next gen games !

@graf1k: I don't know about that. GOTY should go to the game that was the best, regardless of WHY it was the best. TWD was honestly the best time I had with a video game last year, and the gameplay, while not particularly dense, was exactly what it needed to be for that experience. I'll take that over a game that's trying to tell a serious story but then screeches to a halt so you can murder a hundred dudes.

I gotta say, this year excites me for the future of Video Games, with a capital V. I feel like everyone had iffy games on the second half of their personal lists in years past (Rocksmith and Slender, anyone?) but this year, everyone had really solid games on their lists. I think the crop of games this year was remarkably strong. Whether Jeff thought the crop was middling or not, I think the parity of all these games reveals how far games have come. A lot of these games hang at or above last year's top spot.

The trifecta of top games in terms of importance were Gone Home, Papers Please, and Brothers. Three small games put together by small teams that shined because of the merits of their stories and their mechanics. Where those two aspects merged, these three games highlighted the power of video games as a medium. What they were able to do will be mimicked and improved upon by a lot of games to come, because these small teams have the space to do that. That's the big deal, best trend, most exciting stuff to happen in the world of video games this year.

The fact that Mario 3d world isn't on this list is heartbreaking, but I can live with it. Overall it's a solid top 10. Listening to the deliberations helped me understand the process of how they came to a list that, while I may not fully agree with, I can totally understand how it came to be.

Also, I fully expected The Last of Us to end up where it did.

List seems pretty fair and mostly sensible, based on both the personal lists and the discussions had during the podcasts. Having DotA 2 on the list seems kind of odd to me as Giant Bomb's specific game of the year awards, seeing as only Brad had it on his list and no one else was really into it.

Kind of surprised by the absence of anyone even trying to get Saints Row IV on the list, it almost felt a bit like no one thought it had a shot so they didn't argue for it, but in reality it made it onto 4/6 of their lists. Slot Saints Row IV in where DotA 2 is, and this list seems pretty representative of Giant Bomb in 2013 to me.

Divekick doesn't make much sense from the personal lists, but I felt it was appropriate judging by peoples' reactions during the actual deliberations.

Also, I love that RIPD is secretly the worst game of the year, but giving it that title would be too generous for how bad it really was.

The Dota hate is palpable. I love it.

Agree with the questions on Divekick that seems pretty wild and I am interested in listening to the podcast to find out just why in the blue hell that is on the list.

A third point, it makes lists like this easier to swallow when you come to terms with the fact that these guys are super in love with short indie games that the have time to finish shortly so they can move on to the next indie game. They aren't big fans of AAA games anymore. I think it would be nice if they added someone on the staff that A. Enjoys sports games and understands them so we can get more proper reviews B. Actually gets excited for AAA games for reasons other than "man I cant wait to hate on this".

I felt like there were many middle-of-the-list games this year too. Nothing really jumped out and grabbed me as a #1 game. I had a ton of fun with Revengeance, Dragon's Crown, Soul Sacrifice, and a bunch of odd stuff <$15.

The GB list kind of feels the same. A whole lot of #5 games on that list. And 2 that jump out that seem weird on the list at all.

And Last of Us. Alright, well people at least aired the downsides to that game.

Can we please get over the "dark" and "mature" story fetish and live in a world where gameplay is the most important thing about gaming? I really liked TLOU but the first third of that game is pure garbage outside of the powerful opening scene. Uncharted 2 got similar hyperbole surrounding it around but with the spectacle in hindsight, the game was a linear slog. TLOU is definitely an improvement but Brad is right - what makes that game special doesn't have to do with it being a game.

I guess it just shows how much people care about the opinions of the guys on this site by how angry people get about numbered lists.

I'm just glad no games got straight up slagged off on the deliberations podcast, infinite was getting knocked pretty hard of late but it was just positives for all games which is how it should be.

I'm personally super glad that TLOU won best game since it is my personal favorite of the year. The writing, the acting, the score and the sound work is some of the best in it's medium. It all comes together really well to create one cohesive experience that is rarely seen and makes the world of TLOU totally believable.

But what about the gameplay. Well I'm actually one of those people that also liked the gameplay. I admit I didn't at first. I mean the first 15 minutes are absolutely terrific and terrifying, but the following 2 hours are a bit of a chore to get through, and this comes from someone who has beaten the game four times already, but after that it starts to get real good. As you get more options in the combat/stealth scenarios the game really opens up.

I love the The Last of Us both for it's story and also for it's gameplay. It's without a doubt my game of the year.

HA! GTA V is nowhere in sight.

Surprised by that! But I do not follow what their positions are too much, beyond noting the obvious concerning two games. That and the ascendency of small games. That could be well described as a somewhat weaker than usual big game pool, but it could be argued otherwise also. GTA 5 as a big game did not get as far as I figured it might .

I'm pretty fine with this list with two pretty large exceptions; Dota 2 and Saints Row IV.

They said in the podcast that this is the staff's top 10 best games of the year, and Dota 2 has no place in that list whatsoever. Some of them like watching Dota 2, fine, but that does not mean that it qualifies into the entire staffs top 10 games of the year, and the fact that Brad is the only one who plays it even further solidifies the fact that it does not belong in this list. And my opinion regarding Dota 2's apperance in this list has nothing to do with my personal opinion of this game, as I highly like the game and have played somewhere around 600 matches of it.

And then there's Saints Row IV, a game that was in 4 out 6 staff members personal top 10 lists yet hardly even got a mention in the discussion overall. It's absence from the list, and the discussion at large, is perhaps the weirdest thing about this entire list.

Yeah, the GOTY deliberations were really weird this year. Maybe because the opinion on best games were much more varied than past years. I kept wondering why DOTA 2 was anywhere but the bottom of the list with Brad being the only one who actually enjoys playing the game (and Divekick is in a similar boat). Also of note, as another commenter pointed out, Starcraft 2: HOTS was never mentioned (I suppose that in itself means it wouldn't have won, but the gameplay and story twists were as awesome as any Starcraft game to date).

Too much fatigue and not enough serious deliberation. Still entertaining.

Don't worry, I did too and the Top 10 turned out like this:

1 The Last of Us (45p)

2 Gone Home (33p)

3 BioShock: Infinite (32p)

3 The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (32p)

5 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (28p)

6 Saints Row IV (20p)

7 Super Mario 3D World (17p)

8 Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (16p)

9 Papers, Please (15.5p)

10 Rogue Legacy (13p)

So all in all fairly similar to their official list, most interesting detail is Saints Row IV in 6th which only was mentioned in passing...

I'm guessing you came up with this by scoring where the placements were on other lists (Im guessing you gave 10 points for a number 1, 9 for a 2, and so on).

Anyway, this doesn't take into account their individual feelings on a game. I'd argue Brad's love for DOTA2 trumps everyone else's love for their number 1 game, so that would technically be scored higher. Jeff wasn't passionate about any game, and even joked that his list should be called "the 15-5 list", so his picks would be scored less. This, obviously, over complicates things, so it's easier for them to go by gut.

The only choice I question is Divekick making their list, but I guess it's because they hadn't finished formulating their own lists yet before deliberating on best game. So they overestimated where divekick would land on their personal lists.

I wonder if 'Starcraft 2: HOTS' not getting any mention is partly attributable to the elimination of the PC Game of the Year category. Without that category to give them a chance to talk about the game's merits, it would be easy to overlook it later.

If found gameplay in the Last of Us to be a delightful blend of Splinter Cell and Resident Evil 4, but considering that those two are pretty much love-it or hate-it in terms of gameplay its not hard to see why some people wouldn't like it.

Maybe Starcraft wasn't mentioned because it was a mediocre expansion to an otherwise fantastic game. Maybe it was due to it bringing in more issues than improvements and having a story that is, to put it nicely, just boring. Or maybe it was just that none of the Giantbomb guys took to it and it's their GOTY list.

Seems like there's a vocal minority that doesn't like stealth/survival horror gameplay mechanics. I found TLOU to be engrossing from start to finish including the gameplay.

The "it's a movie, not a game" detractors also sound like they don't see gameplay that isn't in the traditional mold of "fun" to be enjoyable. I think that's such a narrow perspective to have for a medium that has more to it than just being an outlet for simple pleasures. I enjoy a fair share of such games (SRIV, MGR, GTAV, and Guacamelee are all in my top 10 for this year), and there are plenty more of their kind out there that are made

@kentonclay: I can understand that. I keep wondering though why it has to be one or the other. I mean, even TLOU has a retarded high body count, just not quite as retarded as most games. While I wasn't as bowled over by Brothers as most of the GB crew seems to have been, I will say that I appreciated it's brevity. If you cut the number of enemy encounters in TLOU by about 1/3rd, the game would have felt like less of a slog. I think Vinny or someone else echoed that at some point on the deliberation podcasts.

I wonder if 'Starcraft 2: HOTS' not getting any mention is partly attributable to the elimination of the PC Game of the Year category. Without that category to give them a chance to talk about the game's merits, it would be easy to overlook it later.

Brad fell pretty hard for DOTA II right after HOTS landed so it's really easy for him to see DOTA II as carrying the torch of PC Strategy that Starcraft ignited in his heart. The rest of the gang actively ignores PC strategy games unless Sid Meier says it is safe.

@naru_joe93: Just jokin'. But for real, The Bomb can no longer be trusted. Remember how none of them even knew God Only Knows is a Beach Boys song?

It certainly discredits them as a website about the Beach Boys.

"None of these songs made a bigger impression than the first one you encounter, a barbershop-quartet rendition of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" that's instantly recognizable and yet profoundly puzzling as soon as you hear it. It's your first real clue about the anachronistic threads running through Columbia, and it establishes a mystique about the strange, unknown nature of the floating city and its residents faster and more effectively than an hour of expository dialog ever could."

Sure, instantly recognizable. I sure as hell didn't know it, the first one I noticed was either Fortunate Son or Everybody Wants To Rule The World. I think they purposefully picked a more obscure one to open the game with anyway.

Also, c'mon. The Aerosmith song at the beginning of SR4. That was hilarious, and didn't even make top 3, something from BF4's campaign that nobody in their right mind would play did.

This year's awards are just baffling to me, last year's were SO good!

I enjoy a fair share of such games (SRIV, MGR, GTAV, and Guacamelee are all in my top 10 for this year), and there are plenty more of their kind out there that are made every year. No reason they can't share space in the industry with games that skew in a different direction.

TLOU's experience as a whole can't be replicated in film anyway. I highly doubt I or anyone else who has loved the game would have as strong a connection to Joel and Ellie if we didn't spend hours and hours playing as them, experiencing all their struggles and moments of levity not just in cutscenes but in every gameplay segment. The harsh post-apocalypse wouldn't have felt so oppressive if we didn't get to explore it ourselves, fighting and fending off the monstrosities and dangerous men that populated it while also discovering the small stories that were told in every finely crafted abandoned room/living quarters. It might not be the most exciting or pleasurable gameplay experience, but it was certainly tense and stoked wonder and sorrow surviving enemies and traveling through fungus-ridden America.

Multiplayer also pretty much delivered on the "pure fun" front while keeping the tone of the single player, too, so that justifies its GOTY win here, in other publications, and most importantly, in my own list!

I'm really surprised seeing so little GTA5 in these lists. Especially after seeing games like AC4 Black Flag in the top 10 GOTY list. I haven't been keeping up with GB as much lately, so I don't know if they have something they just don't like about it, but I certainly think it's one of the stand outs of the year.

Very VERY surprised with The Last of Us. Figured Bioshock Infinite for some reason. Either way Dota 2 was this years Mass Effect 2/Skyrim, and now I'm tired of Dota.

I think the most ironic thing about the complaints about this list is that the staff also doesn't think it is great. There seems to be a lot of weird trading, brash decisions, and back and forth that creates this strange Frankenstein. For example, many have questioned the inclusion of Divekick, but it seems that just made it on so Jeff would feel more comfortable about Brothers and Gone Home not only being on the list, but so high.

Speaking of which, this question is probably going to get me swallowed by a sea of anger, but I really want to ask it anyway. Due to the Steam sale and these podcasts, I decided to buy Brothers. This was definitely a year where sexism in the game industry was talked about a lot with many articles about it appearing on this site. I respect and agreed with many of the opinions and feel like most of the internet are overly horrible when it comes to the subject, but I do think there were points where things were a bit overblown, like with those Feminist Frequency videos and that obscure Dead Island collector's edition. So, all of the guys, outside of Jeff, praised how wonderfully emotionally Brothers was. I am the only one that found it horrifically and offensively sexist in like the most cliched manner possible?

I figured the older brother was going to die, but I thought it was going to be in pursuit of the cure. Instead, he is seduced by a woman who turns out to be a monster who wants to eat them. I mean... seriously? Seriously? That second Feminist Frequency video was praised by a lot in the gaming press, but to me, it was a bunch of nitpicks about games that were mostly considered by all to be bad (like Duke Nukem Forever, Prey, Bionic Commando, etc.) Yet, "woman seducing the man with her evil womanly ways just to corrupt him" is one of the oldest and most maligned sexist tropes in fiction that stretches back thousands of years, yet no one has mentioned it. Perspective is a weird thing. I will cease my whining now.

@djm389: I think you're just kinda reading too much into that. It wasn't offensive to me at all. First of all, remember the situation she was in when she is first introduced. Those were all guys who were acting like obsessed, cultish, gullible, pathetic bastards and they were going to kill her. I don't think they had her there cuz they knew she was some kind of spider demon. I think it was just cuz she's a female and the guys were clearly religious and religion doesn't have a good history when it comes to the treatment of women. If anything, it just seemed like your typical ritual sacrifice.

Also, the younger brother obviously didn't give a crap and wasn't tempted by her at all. I think because the older brother was around that age, he kinda just wanted to follow her anyway, even though it was clearly not the right way and the younger brother knew that. If anything, this just makes the older brother seem horny and gullible. Then there's also the fact that it starts off with the loss of the mother, which is meant to be very painful. This clearly isn't suggesting that all women are evil garbage monsters.

When you look at the game as a whole, I don't see any reason to nitpick this one clearly circumstantial event and inject some kind of disrespect or ill will towards women.

Thanks for your efforts on ranking their top games using a more preferential/ranked voting system. You saved me the trouble of doing it. :)

While I was listening to the day-five podcast, I kept wondering why they didn't just go with this kind of voting system in the first place. Then, of course, I realized that wouldn't make for a very interesting podcast -- or, rather, it would obviate the need for one at all.

Asked and answered.
