Giant Bomb x 8-4

We're already Japanese video game experts, but a few more couldn't hurt.

No Caption Provided

You might have noticed a familiar sound at the beginning of this week’s 8-4 Play podcast, the sometimes bi-weekly podcast about Japanese games from the localization party joint known as 8-4.

We’re friends with those guys, and we love the 8-4 Play podcast.

Hell, I’ve been friends with and worked with John Ricciardi and Mark MacDonald since I was...14? Probably earlier than that, if I actually did the math. It all goes back to an IRC channel called #vidgames, which is where I originally met Brad, too. Time flies.

And the last time Giant Bomb went to Japan, Brad toured through 8-4’s office, remember?

Ever since I came on board at Giant Bomb, I’ve been scheming for a way to get those guys involved over here in a way that made sense for Giant Bomb, 8-4, and most importantly, our communities.

That finally happened last night, when the latest 8-4 Play revealed that we’ll be the new home for their podcast. The actual page will go live soon--stay tuned! Thing is, our tools don’t allow us to keep podcast pages secret, so we couldn’t really build anything until the news was out there. Eventually, after the site's rebuilt, we'll be hosting the podcast the moment it's finished being edited, but for the time being, it will go live on Giant Bomb a few hours after 8-4 pushes it live. If you're already an 8-4 Play listener, you won't have to change your current RSS feed--everything stays the same. Over the next few weeks, we'll be adding all of 8-4's back catalog of episodes onto the site, too.

Pretty soon, there will be a spot for 8-4 Play under the Bombcast on the podcasts tab. Nothing about the Bombcast is changing, and nothing about 8-4 Play is changing. This isn’t a merger, it’s just a partnership, which may lead to other cool things later. Who knows? I mean, imagine the trouble we could get up to with 8-4 if we made it back to Japan.

This isn’t the start of some Giant Bomb podcast network, either. Making this move simply felt...right.

For now, take a deep breath. Giant Bomb will continue to have Quick Looks, reviews, and longwinded discussions about Japanese video games and Tetsuya Nomura. But if you’re looking for a little bit more, especially if you’re a fan of that thing Japan calls Monster Hunter, well, 8-4’s got your back. Please give these guys a warm welcome!

Pretty tacky by Tricky to be moonlighting with other people while working at Giant Bomb!

On the reals though, the work 8-4 did on Nier was amazing

Listened to the latest podcast of theirs & was rather interesting though after the change I'm wondering what changes they might do, maybe even a new home for the Nintendo Download Xpress (prerecorded or via skype).

Welcome to the family...first rule of GiantBomb...don't talk about GiantBomb! Second rule of GiantBomb...please tell others about the website :)

Enjoy your stay and make sure you ask Brad for your complimentary pop tarts...well not complimentary just the nasty brown sugar ones which no one eats.

8-4 does a lot of the tales localizations btw

they also did Nier, though, which was fantastic and amazing.

Hmm, I'll need to check out which ones. Tales is certainly the better of Namco's products when it comes to localizations from what I've played, especially when given the sheer amount of dialogue that's in those games.

They've also localized every Metal Gear game since Portable Ops.

I'm personally stampeeding over to the 8-4 podcast to check it out. Sounds like a collaboration made in heaven, or thereabouts.

Pretty much the only gaming podcast I listen to, next to the Bombcast.

The only potential problem I see with this is Giant Bomb's coverage of games 8-4 has worked on...

This won't impact anything we talk about or how we talk about it, promise!

But that's not really up to you, is it? Giant Bomb decided they were too close to the Bastion team and the development of that game and didn't review it. How can you look at something objectively when you're this close to the group and not let that bias your opinion of a game?

There's a difference between bringing a development team and their game onto the old Happy Hour shows to talk about their development process and such (almost akin to a commercial for their game, even if it was a great game), and hosting a localization company's podcast. It's not simply because they are close to a group. They're close to a lot of developers, yet manage to review their games just fine. It's called professionalism.

While I have never listened to that podcast, it's always nice to see things like this happen. It'll mean more exposure for those guys, and, judging from people's reaction they deserve it. So kudos to both parties involved!

8-4 Play and the Bombcast are my two favorite video game podcasts, so this seems pretty cool. The 8-4some could use some more exposure.

This is such a good fit. The bombcast crew mostly doesn't cover Japanese games, and 8-4 mostly do. When I heard the bombcast intro on this week's episode, I suddenly remembered how they had said last week that they were moving. Can't get the smile off my face.

The bolded is the key sticking point.  It was because of GB's close relationship with the development of the game that they felt would skew their objectivity, not their close relationship with Greg Kasavin on a personal level.  Unless 8-4 games starts showing off the stages of localization a game goes through or something like that, there won't be any such conflicts of interest here.

Idle Thumbs just announced they're partnering with 3-Moves-Ahead, and about 6 months ago Talkradar disbanded and started LaserTime, which is about 4 different podcasts. Also the number of legitemate "podcasting networks" to spring up since 2010 is hard to even keep track of.

Podcasts have gained a strange momentum in the passed year especially.

My favorite podcasts are, in order:

1) Giant Bomb

2) 8-4

So this is great news for everyone involved, even if all it really means in the short term is another entry on the podcasts page, and hopefully more audience for the 8-4 podcast.

Now, if we can get some detailed coverage on TGS, NintendoWorld, the Level-5 convention, etc...

Almost 4 years ago and Mark was already talking over poor Hiroko.....what a jerk! No, I love the 8-4 podcast, glad to see they're finding an awesome new home (somewhere I already visit). Really look forward to whatever crossovers might spring up from this. Maybe Vinny can talk Dark Souls with them too.
