Giant Bomb's 2011 Game of the Year Awards: Day Three

The awards are back and ready to steamroller their way right into your heart with what might be the longest category name in the history of category names, our annual tribute to one of gaming's most reliable voices, and more!

Day three of Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2011 is under way! Looking for further illumination into our decisions? Look no further than our latest deliberation podcast!

Best Competitive Multiplayer

Battlefield 3

No Caption Provided

A great competitive multiplayer game has multiple, disparate masters to serve. Something that might be fun to goof and with your friends in on the weekends might not present the necessary depth to keep you coming back night after night, testing new strategies and shaving points off your kill/death ratio. On the other hand, a hardcore tactical game might require such a stiff time commitment to get good enough to even have fun that it might spook the more casual players. It's a delicate balance, and one that's difficult to obtain.

Battlefield 3 manages to strike a balance--all within the context of a chaotic 64-player firefight, no less--by giving everyone something to do. Whether it's precision sniping, leading a small tactical group, providing medical support, or manning the gunner position in an attack helicopter, the variety is rich, and doesn't favor any one play style too heavily. The scope of the battles, in addition to being fairly impressive technically, also means that if you're still learning how to effectively handle that F/A 18 Super Hornet, your team isn't overly penalized. Compound all that with a strong and sticky player progression system, plus the excellently implemented Battlelog system, and Battlefield 3 is an easy choice for Best Competitive Multiplayer.

Runners-Up: Assassin's Creed: Revelations, You Don't Know Jack

Best Use of Nolan North

Portal 2

No Caption Provided

Our Best Use of Nolan North award--that's "The Northies," for short--gets harder and harder to judge every year. While his starring role in the Uncharted series continues to impress and, yes, earns a nomination this year, it's great to see little bits of America's Favorite Voice Actor showing up in unexpected places doing unexpected things. That's what made North's performance as the Penguin in Batman: Arkham City so exciting, but that spirit goes even further with North's multiple robotic roles in Portal 2.

Whether it's his brief bits as "Rick" the Adventure Sphere, the Fact Sphere, the Space Sphere, or the broken turrets that populate much of the game, the quality of the performance shines through. That's extra-impressive when you consider all the effects thrown onto the voices in Portal 2 to make them sound more like computer people. Oh, and it certainly doesn't hurt that those four roles have almost all of the game's best, funniest lines. We could--and, for a time, actually did--listen to clips from Portal 2's spheres on loop and crack up at it just about every time. And for that, we're both proud to announce Nolan North as this year's winner and sad to have to say "better luck next year" to Mr. North for the runners-up that didn't take home the prize. Congratulations?

Best-Looking Game

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

No Caption Provided

When it comes to judging visuals, the "fair" way is to separate them along technical and artistic lines, which allows you to give some dap to whatever the hot new engine technology is while not forgetting that without proper artists doing proper art, those engines are essentially useless. But we never said these awards were fair. So we've continued to conflate those two things into one category, mostly to make it harder on ourselves. But when one game can do both really well, even this task becomes fairly easy.

The Witcher 2: Assassin's of Kings is one of those games that reminds you why the PC's inherent hardware advantage can be so spectacular. It certainly doesn't hurt that it's hitting when we're at the tail end of a generation of consoles, which only allows CD Projekt's gem of an RPG to stand out that much more. The art team has crammed this world full of some fantastic-looking characters that stand out whether you're running around the world or partaking in a cutscene. Outstanding models, nice effects, and a technical side that allows it all to run at an outstanding frame rate on the right configuration makes this a beautiful game from every angle. It'll be interesting to see what corners need to be cut to get a game that looks this great running on consoles next year.

The “Check Yourself Before You Wriggety-Wreck Yourself” Award for Things That Need to "Take a Break" Before They Become the “Worst Trend”

Sequel Fatigue

In the past, we've awarded a "Take A Break" offering to franchises that just feel like they're wearing out their welcome while also delivering a "Worst Trend" for the nastiest things happening to the business behind the games we play. This year, we felt a little more alarmist about the way some things are heading these days, leading to what we're fairly certain is the longest, dumbest category name we've ever had.

Capcom's long-running trend of re-releasing its games with a bit of extra content went to new lows this year with the ultra-quick turnaround on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. And the way EA seems to be slapping the BioWare brand onto any studio or game that isn't making a football game or a shooter certainly has us wary about where one of gaming's most trusted studio names is heading. But in the end, the thing that got to us the most in 2011 is that feeling that this year's sequels just aren't doing it like last year's sequels did.

With Brad bumming out on Batman: Arkham City's open-world additions, Ryan finding this year's Assassin's Creed lacking, Patrick's issues with Uncharted 3's shooting and overall pacing, and Jeff's general malaise about the quality of this year's Call of Duty release, it seems like the new models just ain't doing it like the last ones did. Chalk it up to the length of this generation of hardware and the notion that studios are probably holding their big guns back for an assumed 2013 console launch if you must. But regardless of the reasons, it's the thing that cast the most ominous shadow over gaming for us this year. So let's just hope we're getting worked up over nothing and carry on, OK?

Runners Up: BioWare Infinite, Capcom Re-Releases

Best Use of 3

Gears of War 3

No Caption Provided

As the cost of making games has gone up, the desire to stretch out a franchise just one more time becomes really appealing. The easiest way to keep people on the hook is by hiding story secrets until the next one, then dangling even juicier details if players come on board with the next game, too. Then, when a developer finally decides to spill those closely guarded answers, you risk disappointing everyone in the process!

We were genuinely surprised how much closure Epic Games gave players with Gears of War 3. Sure, at least one prominent mythology question was strangely ignored, but when the screen faded to black in Gears of War 3, it was clear that the story of Marcus Fenix had come to an end. There was no dangling, groan-inducing cliffhanger, and nothing after the credits.

When a series is still hugely successful and breaking sales records, to say "no, we've told the story we wanted to tell, and now it's time for something new" is a decision worth applauding. There will be another Gears of War game eventually, but now we've been primed for a totally new experience, and that's incredibly exciting.

@Curufinwe: I think that specific achievement is unlocked by doing the additional four advanced AR challenges. But the grapnel boost is acquired by completing the normal challenges, so I'm sure they all had it. Why Brad had any issues with the grapnel is beyond me, though.

Strong choices all-around in my opinion. I'm somewhat surprised that Alice: Madness Returns didn't get a mention for Best-Looking game during the deliberations, but then again, that's a game that kind of came and went and probably just slipped under the radar.

The sequel fatigue...idk. Some justification, personally I could see it most for MW, but very little for Batman or Uncharted 3. I got done playing Batman last night and feel like I played a very very good game, Uncharted 3 hit me as very good also. I have to try another Assasins creed besides the first one, that was the one that put me off a bit. Much less 2 or 3 down the road.

But best use of Nolan North..right on!.

@Hashbrowns: I can think of a few criticisms of Arkham City.

  • A few hotspots in the city that have actual action in them, though spread very far apart, with not a lot of content in between (collectibles excluded). Speaking of which, 400 Riddler trophies?! Seriously? Also, that giant untraversable hole in the map, not a great design decision.
  • On a related note: Asylum allowed for, or forced, brief bursts of combat during traversal. It kept the player on his / her toes instead of firing the grapple gun constantly. City's combat is a distraction when you're moving across Arkham: Glide through the skies, notice something, descend, WHACK!, grapple back up, back to gliding. You're far better off just avoiding everything and save time by just going to your destination.
  • Which leads nicely into... Experience rewards for combat! Asylum could dictate how many enemies you would face and, subsequently, how fast the upgrades would be doled out. City? Well, there are a few frustrating places where you wished you could take a bit more damage, had that upgraded gadget, etc. And then you'd spend a fair amount of time hunting down poor criminals. Not a smooth ride.
  • Apart from a few key outside areas, say Steel Mill or... Amusement Mile?, there isn't a lot of distinction between the zones. I spent a lot of time looking for the Bat-signal because it, honestly, is the most reliable indicator of where you're supposed to go.
  • There still is an incredible over-reliance on Detective Mode: Yes, there are limits now, yes, there are enemies that jam it, but both are so trivial and concentrated in one area (hello, open world!), that avoiding them and looking at the world through blue-tinted glasses was the path of least resistance.

Off the top of my head, these are a few complaints I can think of (maybe some of them stolen from the relevant Bombcast).

@Gaff: Thank you for your response. I'll respond to only a few of your points, because the others are subjective past the point of useful argument (visual differences in areas, the fenced in area being bad design, combat progression). Not that those opinions aren't valid, of course, it's just that they're so far removed from mine that I can't relate to where you're coming from.

Detective mode wasn't a problem in Arkham Asylum and it isn't a problem in Arkham City. Just don't use it. I hope that doesn't sound too flippant, but really, if the player doesn't like a feature, don't use it. It's entirely viable to use detective mode EXTREMELY sparingly. It's similar to complaining about the addition of fast-travel to Elder Scrolls games. Just don't use it so much.

The complaint against having 400 Riddler Challenges is especially bizarre. Sure, I don't read every review or listen to every podcast on the internet, but the only real mention of this "problem" I've heard is from the Bombsquad. I really just don't get it. It's a little like saying there is too much loot in Diablo. There's no mandate to get them all, and they aren't all just hidden objects, many of them are surprisingly well designed puzzles, and they unlock really compelling extras like additional patient interviews and some spectacular concept art. I actually collected them all, and I never do that sort of thing in games. If they want to make a big deal about collectibles in B:AA, they should lambaste every Assassin's Creed for that reason, but they don't.

As for random badguys being a distraction; the Bombsquad actually said it best themselves with "the game makes you feel like Batman". I never found it distracting when a shake-down sprang up while I was traveling, in fact it is pitch-perfect for a superhero game. Bad stuff happens unexpectedly, and sometimes when it seems inconvenient. To criticize a game for having impromptu and dynamic optional missions seems like an argument for more linearity and "guided experiences" which gamers rightly decry.

Thanks for the discussion, regardless.

I agree that games look amazing nowadays, and the Witcher is incredible looking, but I really have to say I still think Uncharted 3 is the best-looking game in existence. Bar none. I can compare Uncharted 2 very directly too since I played it just this year for the first time, and there's a marked improvement, especially with faces. The creepy eyes (especially with Chloe) were taken care of, and the scope and detail and animation, with the style they go for, is some of the best CGI I've ever seen period.

I really don't think the Bioware infinite qualifies. I mean with the release of the old republic MMO, Austin has proved that it is making Bioware games. An MMO yes, but still distinctly bioware. The only new studio is that C&C game, which yes is a bit odd, but it hasn't proved yet to be different in philosophy to other Bioware games. Who knows? it could be a stratagy game with moral choices and great writing despite the insane premise. Running it on an assumption that it's totally not bioware before we even know what the game looks like seems like the bad way to go saying "HEY THEY BETTER STOP BEFORE THEY KILL THEMSELVES!" We don't know what the new C&C game is going to play other than the storyline crazy.

Kinda shocked crysis 2 didn't get some props for best looking, crysis after the dx 11 tesselation patch and dirt 3 where the "better looking" games especially on pc... But I also can totally understand why someone would give it witcher 2 and dead space 2 (some moments in that game was just, wow), and obviously rayman deserved a nom

@Video_Game_King: I think games are released in relation to the time in which they are released. Gears of War, for example, feels out-of-date thanks to the innovations and style Dead Space has brought to the entire genre; namely, the newfound emphasis on precision and speed in third-person shooters. Even if Gears 2 and Dead Space are contemporaries, Gears of War 3 must also contend with inFamous, Uncharted 2, Vanquish, and even Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption, as well as Dead Space 2.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in particular relied upon AC:Rev moving things along significantly in the storyline, which did not happen. It's similar to MGS2 looking worse to those of us who don't like MGS4; MGS2 was interesting because we were promised decent answers to the myriad questions players were left asking at the end of MGS2, but MGS4 was such a ridiculous farce of a game (especially after the much-more serious and emotional MGS3) that it left a bad taste in my mouth for everything from both titles. Saints Row: The Third is an awesome game, but part of what makes it so awesome is the set-up it gives for Saints 4 in its bad-guy ending.

People need to realize they're not reviewing games in this process, but simply going by their guts, and finding middle ground between the five of them. Their opinions can differ from ours, you guys. It's okay. We're not machines.

That said, I'm glad to see Dead Space 2 getting some love. I adore the fuck out of that game, and thought it'd be completely forgotten about with all the other big releases happening later on in the year. Didn't quite expect it to make it into the category of best-looking games, but it does make sense. Game is moody as shit.

Meh, maybe I'm alone, but I'd rather continue playing 4s and 5s in a great series that I love than run out and spend $60 on a new IP game that's probably just as good, but that I have no connection to. Perhaps sequels aren't lacking just because they're sequels. Even if that developer had gone on to make a new IP, they may have stuck with mechanics they were used to and still made a game that felt similarly fatiguing. Infinity Ward, if they ever move on from Call of Duty, will probably make a game similar to Call of Duty. I don't think the "sequel fatigue" is going to magically disappear just because there's a different title on the box cover. I say give me more sequels to things I'm already invested in.

Also, saying Bioshock Infinite is pretty much a new IP isn't accurate, I don't think. You're still using plasmids (now with a different name) and fighting deranged enemies. The new thing is the sky-city environment, which does look cool. I just don't get the hype behind this game. I'm interested to play it, but everyone seems to think it's the second coming.

I was under the impression that the reason Victory was renamed to BioWare Victory is that Dr. Ray Muzyka is now managing it. Which makes the change make more sense, but considering that the common gamer won't know about that, it's still pretty bad.

@chaosnovaxz: I respect that position. But It's the opposite for me. I have IP fatigue with all those games mentioned. The worlds the mechanics and the characters bore me. I want new experiences whether they're refined or not instead of just another gears or another uncharted.

Not everyone can be Valve, but the Half Life development cycle unintentional or otherwise is my preferred time-frame. Your connection the the characters remains intact, but the gameplay is drastically different each time(excluding the episodes). It feels new and interesting and at the same time it's the old friend you remember.

@SargeGulp: True that. I suppose sometimes it seems to me that there's a strange disposition towards sequels. It seems that often people play an absolutely great game and then say "...Yep, done! No more please!", and I'm the exact opposite. I like trying new things too. I can just never get enough of my favorite franchises.

But games don't have to (and shouldn't) rely on other games to deliver their quality. I have never played a Dead Space game; will Gears 1feel dated to me? Not everybody is going to play the most modern games out there, so it's stupid to factor them into the equation as if they're a certainty. This becomes especially bad when we cross consoles (like you're doing with inFamous and Uncharted 2), because it's even less likely that people will own all the consoles to make that equation necessary. Again, we can determine a game's quality through the game alone. You shouldn't change the quality of a game based on what other games are doing or what future games in the series might do; just look at what the game is doing and ask questions of it that can only apply to the game itself.

That game is fucking amazing, and the Giantbomb Official classic server is the fucking shit. You should all buy that game and get on this server, right fucking now.

As a fan of Nations. I really should be playing Trackmania 2 already. But fucking hell man, all these other games and Gran Turismo 5 DLC + Forza 4. Its not good to enjoy so many genres anymore :(

"...For example, this year many reviewers are finally taking issue with the entertaining but one-and-done smoke and mirrors campaign design in MW3, which was present and obvious since the first CoD game..."

Go back further. Medal of Honor and its expansionpacks :P.

I need to go listen to the podcast to hear why Dead Space was a runner up for Best Looking. I can see why, I think, but it didn't impress me much, at least not compared to some of the other games I've played this year.

Amazing lighting, great camera work, nice animation, superb in game Menu/UI. I can see why though it doesn't seem that impressive. I mean even Lost Planet 2 looks pretty ace. Most third-person games are nice to look at these days, even RE4 still kinda wows me.

I'm amazed RAGE isn't even a runner-up for Best Looking, I'd figure Brad would be fighting hard for it. Maybe Dead Space 2 was a peace offering.

El Shaddai as well. There were a lot of visually stunning games this year. Hopefully on the accompanying podcasts both RAGE and El Shaddai get a nod. Yet to listen the 'casts yet.

what I want to know since I haven't listened to the podcast but they did they at least MENTION Trine 2 in best looking because that would be criminal

Certainly not criminal, haha.

Why wasn't GiantBomb considered for the Northy this year.

Probably because the interview they had with him was horrible.

Dead Space 2 being picked over Uncharted 3... smh.

Uncharted 3 deserves more love.

Loved Gears 3. I wish i played more BF3, but all my friends play COD. Wish I had a PC to check out the Witcher because that hasn't sold me.

Don't know why you'd say that. I was smiling the whole time...probably one of my favorite videos they've ever done.

Truth be told, compared to uncharted 3, dead space 2 looks like exploded dog ass.
