Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day One

We reveal our picks for 2010's 2009 Game of the Year, Best New Character, Best Original Song, Best Debut, and Best PC-Only Game.

And be sure to check out today's Game of the Year deliberation podcast to find out how we came to these decisions!

2010's 2009 Game of the Year

Ā

Borderlands

No Caption Provided
2009's Borderlands is such a 2010 game that it's on the verge of becoming a 2011 game. That might sound like nonsense, but mostly what it means is that a good number of us are still actively playing Borderlands even today, over a year after it came out. That's largely becauseĀ  GearboxĀ did such a great job of supporting the game with ongoing DLC releases this year, putting out four new packs that thoroughly rounded out the world of Pandora and made Borderlands feel more like the game we all wanted it to be when it shipped.Ā Ā
Ā
We're not sure Gearbox is finished pumping out new areas, quests, and loot for Borderlands (hell, we don't even thinkĀ GearboxĀ is sure if they're finished), but one thing is for sure: we're ready to play any new content for the game they want to gin up before we get our hands on the inevitable sequel.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up:Ā  Forza Motorsport 3,Ā  Dragon Age: Origins

Best New Character

Ā

BayonettaĀ or maybe Mordin Solus

Ā  Ā Ā
No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Francis York Morgan, Mordin SolusĀ and/or Bayonetta, hell, we don't know.
Ā

Best Original Song

Ā

Entrance Music - Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

Ā Ā
No Caption Provided
There's certainly something to be said for thoughtful orchestral scores with layered themes and an emotional resonance that brings weight to the proceedings and helps elevate the dramatic poignance of a game's narrative. But here at Giant Bomb, we like bangers--insidious, hard-hitting tracks with bass that will ruin your plumbing and snaky hooks that won't let go--and nothing banged harder in 2010 than the main menu music in Namco's downloadable Pac-Man Championship Edition DX.Ā
Ā
It's a loping, looping knob-twiddler in which each tweaked-out, wobbly cycle lasts well under a minute, but it's so infectious that you'll have a hard time leaving the main menu upon which it plays. When you do, though, you'll be completely pumped up and ready to eat the hundreds of ghosts that Pac-Man CE DX throws at you in any given minute. But rather than just trying--and failing--to describe this piece of music ad nauseum, you should probably just listen to it yourself. It's energetic, it's primal, and its our choice for Best Original Song in 2010.
Ā
No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Betus Blues - Super Meat Boy, Life is Beautiful - Deadly Premonition

Best Debut

Ā

Bayonetta

Ā
No Caption Provided
2010 started with a bang--a big, crazy, half-naked, J-Pop-laced, hair-covered, lollipop-sucking, angel-smashing, ten-foot-tall bang--thanks in no small part to PlatinumGames' Bayonetta.Ā  Even though it was within the very first week of January that we were treated to a much-needed jolt of over-the-top Japanese video-game ridiculousness, it was an experience that stayed with us for the rest of the year.
Ā
There's a standing complaint within the games business for more original materials, and less sequels. Bayonetta's core gameplay might be very directly derivative of Capcom's Devil May Cry series, and the experience laced with loving references to Sega arcade classics like OutRun and Space Harrier, but she still managed to make a mighty strong first impression on her own merits, though we have to admit that we cannot wait to see what her sequel will look like.Ā

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Super Meat Boy, Limbo

Best PC-Only Game

Ā

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

No Caption Provided
Real-time strategy, with its demands for pixel-perfect mouse precision and zillions of hotkeys, might be the one genre that's most suited to being played on a PC. Sure, RTS has been done on a console, but you sure couldn't pull off the lightning-fast, high level of competitive play that defines StarCraft II's multiplayer with a gamepad. But the multiplayer's enormous strategic depth is only half the story, since StarCraft II also offers one of the best and most varied single-player campaigns we've ever seen in an RTS as well.
Ā
Blizzard's long-awaited sequel didn't just recreate the core struggle between the terrans, zerg, and protoss; it revitalized and modernized the essence of what StarCraft is, with just enough streamlining here and rebalancing there to make the game feel simultaneously familiar and brand new. The pervasive variety of the campaign, endlessly evolving challenge of the multiplayer, and promise of two story-driven expansions all combine to make StarCraft II a PC game we'll be thinking about for years to come.Ā

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Civilization V, VVVVVVĀ
Ā
And to recap, here's a video that covers all of today's categories. Be sure to check back at noon tomorrow for another batch of awards.
Ā Ā  Ā Ā Ā

I think they can't decide between Bayonetta and Mordin because they simply know that Francis York Morgan should win, but just can't bring themselves to admit it.

@spazmaster666:@gordjt:Ā  They actually did mention John Marston and considered him as a Best New Character contender on the podcast. York beat him for the third nominee slot, though.

Did anyone else find the conversation over Limbo and Darksiders frustrating? Ā  It felt to me like Brad (who clearly hadn't played Darksiders since its release) was being a whiny brat over the whole thing...Ā
Or am I the only one?

This just once again confirms that Brad is a horrible multitasker and that it's why he sucks it up in quite a few QLs.

Old Gods of Asgard, anyone?! The riding-to-Mexico song in Red Dead, anyone? And Borderlands, because of DLC -- for which at least one of the three packs was classified as basically "not worth your time" by Giant Bomb quicklook/review? "
Sure they played things like Alan Wake and Red Dead and such. They just liked the song from Pac Man and Bayonetta as a character more. What part of that don't you understand?

@Rayeth:
Probably just comes down to difference of opinion, but the DX music just seemed like a cool one minute beat to me, and not a great song. Ā Doesn't really compare to the more developed tracks of SMB or VVVVV for that matter. Ā Though that's obviously colored by my love for the music developed in playing through them and love for retro-inspired music in general.Ā
Ā
I do wish that they had done best soundtrack overall, as there are some great contenders and I think SMB works better when seen in the whole with the light/dark/retro/boss variations on each of the otherwise great themes that match their world fairly well.

I think the only way to settle the problem between whether Mordin or Bayonetta take the Best Character award is to say fuck it, York wins.

Mordin was an alright character but he didn't stand out for me. His loyalty mission felt like one of the weakest ones and without going through the trouble of talking to him on the ship he just felt like a scientist on crack. Even then I'd argue that's when he had his best lines.

I listened to the entire show, including the conclusion of the Mordin decision twice, and yeah, they blatantly called it for him. I kept thinking, maybe they come back around and give it to Bayonetta?Ā
Ā
Or maybe they talked about a shit-load of games for a week straight and ā€¦ forgot? Awesomer.Ā

Either way, this makes my fictional TOP TEN GIANT BOMB MOMENTS OF 2010. (#2 after $750,000,000)

Jeff seems to have this irrational dislike for RDR, he was arguing hard againstĀ Ā  Marston, even though he did not really play the game. I am ok if he did not choose him, but if you have not played perhaps he should defer.Ā

I know what you mean.Ā
To be honest the whole concept of these GOTY podcasts is bullshit to begin with, cause it all comes down to who is gonna back down and accept the opinion of someone else even though they dont agree with it. But its made worse when you have a scenario like this where someone hasn't played the game that they are talking about.Ā Ā
Ā
I would have preferred if instead they just did the personalĀ  top 10 list in podcast format, and cut out the scripted video lists altogether.

To quote Chie, Sheesh. Jeff doesn't like Western settings, so he doesn't like Red Dead. I love the game myself, but it's not too hard to understand.

That Pac-Man song is dreadful.... causes me headaches.
Anyway, I guess it's cool if you like techno, but GB dudes... best original song of the year, really?? That kinda shows a complete disregard for an enourmous amount of really amazing orchestral compositions that were made this year :(

Regardless of the quality of Bayonetta the game, Bayonetta the character is, despite the inexplicable awarding here, a two-dimensional, wildly misogynistic stereotype. Confident in any situation? Yes, but only because she has a one-note personality. The game is awesome in spite of Bayonetta, not because of her.

Well, considering my favorite soundtracks of 2008 and 2009 were respectively: Bionic Commando Rearmed, and Shatter...I don't see where you're coming from. The thought that some generic orchestral music is somehow moreĀ prestigiousĀ and deserving of an original soundtrack award baffles me, since I'm 95% less likely to listen to the official soundtrack of a game featuring that type of music.

Seemed pretty clear-cut on the Bombcast that Mordin Solus won Best New Character, but hey ho, he can be joint winner with Bayonetta if necessary (although I personally think Mordin & Francis York Morgan are far more detailed characters).

Darksiders was ROBBED. I hope it manages at least a runner up in some category, though I doubt it. No one gave that game enough of a chance and simply wrote it of as a zelda clone. Its much more than that, even based on the depth of combat alone.
