Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day One

We reveal our picks for 2010's 2009 Game of the Year, Best New Character, Best Original Song, Best Debut, and Best PC-Only Game.

And be sure to check out today's Game of the Year deliberation podcast to find out how we came to these decisions!

2010's 2009 Game of the Year

Borderlands

No Caption Provided
2009's Borderlands is such a 2010 game that it's on the verge of becoming a 2011 game. That might sound like nonsense, but mostly what it means is that a good number of us are still actively playing Borderlands even today, over a year after it came out. That's largely because  Gearbox did such a great job of supporting the game with ongoing DLC releases this year, putting out four new packs that thoroughly rounded out the world of Pandora and made Borderlands feel more like the game we all wanted it to be when it shipped.

We're not sure Gearbox is finished pumping out new areas, quests, and loot for Borderlands (hell, we don't even think Gearbox is sure if they're finished), but one thing is for sure: we're ready to play any new content for the game they want to gin up before we get our hands on the inevitable sequel.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up:  Forza Motorsport 3 Dragon Age: Origins

Best New Character

Bayonetta or maybe Mordin Solus

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Francis York Morgan, Mordin Solus and/or Bayonetta, hell, we don't know.

Best Original Song

Entrance Music - Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

No Caption Provided
There's certainly something to be said for thoughtful orchestral scores with layered themes and an emotional resonance that brings weight to the proceedings and helps elevate the dramatic poignance of a game's narrative. But here at Giant Bomb, we like bangers--insidious, hard-hitting tracks with bass that will ruin your plumbing and snaky hooks that won't let go--and nothing banged harder in 2010 than the main menu music in Namco's downloadable Pac-Man Championship Edition DX.

It's a loping, looping knob-twiddler in which each tweaked-out, wobbly cycle lasts well under a minute, but it's so infectious that you'll have a hard time leaving the main menu upon which it plays. When you do, though, you'll be completely pumped up and ready to eat the hundreds of ghosts that Pac-Man CE DX throws at you in any given minute. But rather than just trying--and failing--to describe this piece of music ad nauseum, you should probably just listen to it yourself. It's energetic, it's primal, and its our choice for Best Original Song in 2010.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Betus Blues - Super Meat Boy, Life is Beautiful - Deadly Premonition

Best Debut

Bayonetta

No Caption Provided
2010 started with a bang--a big, crazy, half-naked, J-Pop-laced, hair-covered, lollipop-sucking, angel-smashing, ten-foot-tall bang--thanks in no small part to PlatinumGames' Bayonetta.  Even though it was within the very first week of January that we were treated to a much-needed jolt of over-the-top Japanese video-game ridiculousness, it was an experience that stayed with us for the rest of the year.

There's a standing complaint within the games business for more original materials, and less sequels. Bayonetta's core gameplay might be very directly derivative of Capcom's Devil May Cry series, and the experience laced with loving references to Sega arcade classics like OutRun and Space Harrier, but she still managed to make a mighty strong first impression on her own merits, though we have to admit that we cannot wait to see what her sequel will look like.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Super Meat Boy, Limbo

Best PC-Only Game

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

No Caption Provided
Real-time strategy, with its demands for pixel-perfect mouse precision and zillions of hotkeys, might be the one genre that's most suited to being played on a PC. Sure, RTS has been done on a console, but you sure couldn't pull off the lightning-fast, high level of competitive play that defines StarCraft II's multiplayer with a gamepad. But the multiplayer's enormous strategic depth is only half the story, since StarCraft II also offers one of the best and most varied single-player campaigns we've ever seen in an RTS as well.

Blizzard's long-awaited sequel didn't just recreate the core struggle between the terrans, zerg, and protoss; it revitalized and modernized the essence of what StarCraft is, with just enough streamlining here and rebalancing there to make the game feel simultaneously familiar and brand new. The pervasive variety of the campaign, endlessly evolving challenge of the multiplayer, and promise of two story-driven expansions all combine to make StarCraft II a PC game we'll be thinking about for years to come.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Civilization V, VVVVVV

And to recap, here's a video that covers all of today's categories. Be sure to check back at noon tomorrow for another batch of awards.

thats not how it works... when you buy the game, you dont have to pay for that subscription... you only pay for it if you didnt buy the game, but still want to have an active starcraft 2 account... "
Don't you love it when people jump the gun based on what they read in some headline versus the whole article?

I would say McLarty Party People is the best song on the Meatboy OST, but I can see why they picked what they did.

Has there been any official statement regarding Bayonetta/Mordin for the best new character? Apart from the "hell, we don't know" one.

Jeff tweeted that they'll figure out what happened when everyone is back in the office.

The Giantbomb awards are always more entertaining than the rest of the industry because they put a huge emphasis on the fun of games. People are going to complain because they aren't being gaming snobs or pretentiously faking knowledge of every game released. It's refreshing.

To be fair, Jeff lost thw Limbo vs. Darksiders or Dance Central argument. The only bit wherw I feel Brad got shut down was thw Marston vs. York fight, where he was clearly in the minority.

And even then it felt like Brad was just using Marston because he didn't want York getting through. I think if he really felt like Marston was worth the effort he would of gone after Bayonetta who was able to slip by because Brad was blinded by his hatred for Deadly Premonition.

The lithmus test for fanboyism will basically come down to whether or not they give Metro 2033 best technical graphics (if there is such a category). All other things can be debated and negotiated, technical aspects can't. Nothing even came close to Metro 2033 this year; anyone who says God of War III or Mass Effect 2 (i.e. IGN and Gamespot) should have their eyes plucked out.

I don't think it was necessarily that. It was the fact that Jeff said 'ok it's Mordin, Bayonetta, and York' at the start. Then they x'ed out every one of Brad's choices and there's one point where he even says, 'Well why don't we eliminate any of those three?' I assume their was a problem with the fact that the three Jeff stated were basically untouchable.

That guy was a highlight reel unto himself. "

The fact that Jeff was so completely shut down in the whole Limbo debate (and VVVVVV) completely disproves this insane "what jeff says goes" thing. It's majority rules and Brad's opinions were just more often in the minority for these categories.

I think there are much better PC ONLY Games out that deserve the title. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Prypiat comes to mind...the most improved game in that entire series, and still. or Amnesia? Just saying.

Brad lost the Marston convo the second he started railing on Deadly P and not even acknowledging the good things the other guys where saying. He wasn't winning anyone over with that pouty face.

The Limbo convo was ridiculous. Jeff doesnt like it, so what. I'm glad Brad hung in there and used more reason, but he was still whining!

Considering that RTS has been shown to work on consoles (Halo Wars, SupCom 2), I'm surprised that StarCraft 2 didn't get a port.

They ported the original Starcraft to the N64, it is considered one of the worst games ever made for the N64

While I think the Pac Man DX menu tune is lame, they did right by nominating literally anything from Super Meat Boy. That game has the soundtrack of the year in my opinion.

Scott Pilgrim's soundtrack was absolutely terrible. I thought I would really like it with the retro-ness, but it sounds like a chiptune put through a distortion pedal. Definitely not worth even remembering.

As much as I dig the music in Pac Man CEDX, I think there are in-game tracks that are better than the menu music. Also, I would argue that there are plenty of tracks from both Super Meat Boy and VVVVVV that are better than that title track. Odd choice.

I wasn't sure how the Bayonetta stuff would get received here after finally listening to this Day One podcast and I'm kind of glad to see that everyone is as either conflicted or confused about the love in some places I didn't get it either. Like, it was a cool game and one of the better new titles I played this year, and yeah, it was some crazy shit, but despite the "Devil May Cry but better" claims, it was DMC with a female lead where crazier shit happened. Oh, and it wished it could be as good as DMC3 was, just taking it down to gameplay. The combat in Bayonetta was extremely more button-mash style than DMC ever was. I essentially got through that game using the same five-hit combo that did max damage and just kept myself on the trigger to block and Witch Time as needed or backflip away. Between the weapon switching, the four techniques, the juggling (seriously, I forgot Bayonetta had guns two levels into that game they were so irrelevant while in DMC you need to find the perfect balance of keeping distance with your guns and then getting in to do some close and dirty work) and on and on in DMC, the combat play in Bayonetta was nowhere near as in depth and intense as it was compared to a game that came out five years ago and it essentially was a successor to. Yeah, crazier shit went down and I loved it for it, but eh, I guess I just wasn't as impressed.

Bayonetta was definitely an attention-getter beyond just the main character. And I'm gonna have to check out those songs that you guys posted!

I wish I could agree or disagree with best new character but I haven't had the chance to catch up on games to really know. :(

Wow, a friend of mine just started playing Mass Effect 2, and sent me a tell saying she likes Mordin. Having (only) listened to the podcast, I mentioned that GiantBomb named him Character of the Year, and quick sent her the link here.

Then I actually looked at it the article.

You guys totally robbed Mordin. You declared him the winner, then took it away..?
Did GiantBomb hire Kanye West to handle the awards or something?

I don't care which one you pick (though I personally prefer Mordin), but when you make a decision stick to it, and no ties.

By whom, exactly? I recall it getting reasonably good reviews. Like here for example. That ain't no Superman 64! It's not the preferred way to play the game by any means, but it's a reasonable port. It was even considered a good step forward for RTS on consoles for the save features and its splitscreen. I'm not sure where you're getting your info. By the way, that review was by Joe Fielder, who works with Irrational now. He's pretty legit.
