Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day Three

Our picks for Most Ridiculous Use of FMV, Most Improved Franchise, Most Egregious Use Of Product Placement/In-Game Advertising, Worst Accent, and Best Wii-Only Game of 2010!

Don't miss our Day Three Deliberation Podcast, where personal and professional relationships are put to the ultimate test!

Most Ridiculous Use of FMV

Comic Jumper

No Caption Provided
As players of the 1990s, we'll probably always have a soft spot in our hearts for full-motion video in gaming... especially when it's used for something completely ridiculous. While we'll probably never get back to the heady days of stuff like Night Trap and Sewer Shark, there are still a few teams out there finding crazy was to incorporate real people and footage into their games. But none did it crazier and more over-the-topperest than Twisted Pixel did with Comic Jumper.

After spending some time fooling you into thinking that it's a fairly standard side-scrolling shooter, Comic Jumper goes off the rails completely with a hilarious video intro that sets the stage for what's to come. The human side of the game is revisited a few times throughout, going so far as to actually put members of the game's development team in as characters in the game. But it's the super attack, a strong pummeling from a collection of human arms, legs, and even heads, that sends it over the moon. Those Twisted Pixel guys are out of their minds in the most glorious way possible, and Comic Jumper's dedication to making the most out of every single megabyte of video is actually the best part of the entire production.

Runners-up: The Fight: Lights Out, Alan Wake

Most Improved Franchise

Need for Speed

No Caption Provided
Despite our half-ironic affection for Need for Speed: Most Wanted--or, perhaps, because of it--we've been increasingly disappointed with the year-over-year iterations that the Need for Speed series has been subjected to since. Even when it was revealed earlier this year that Burnout developer Criterion Games--arguably the best arcade-style racing developer in the world right now--would be taking the reins with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, we were skeptical.

But Criterion destroyed any and all doubts with Hot Pursuit, a razor-sharp racer featuring gorgeous visuals, a solid sense of speed, and a smart progression system that encouraged you to play the game however you liked, whether that meant focusing on playing as the pursuing cops or the evasive racers, playing online or off, or any combination thereof. The Autolog feature was specifically a revelation, dynamically generating attainable challenges based on how good your friends actually are at Hot Pursuit. The Need for Speed name is stronger than it has been for a good decade now, thanks entirely to Hot Pursuit, which is why we choose it for Most Improved Franchise of 2010.

Runners-up: Red Steel, Just Cause

Most Egregious Use Of Product Placement/In-Game Advertising

Shaun White Skateboarding

No Caption Provided
We're not even sure how this happened. How, exactly, do you ship a game where the main story is all about "fighting the man" while simultaneously making room in your story for pervasive branding? Shaun White should be ripping down these Stride gum billboards, not "freeing" the oppressive billboards and allowing them to show this friendly on-brand message! Seriously, did anyone even look at this before putting it on shelves?

To take matters one step further, the game even has a branded achievement/trophy that unlocks when you complete this grim task. It's too bad, too, because there are certainly some interesting ideas in Shaun White Skateboarding. But this aspect is so incredibly misguided that I don't think any of us will ever find out how it all turns out in the end.

Runners-up: Alan Wake, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

Worst Accent

Heavy Rain

No Caption Provided
A game so critically focused on story and characters as Heavy Rain really ought to nail all of its dramatic elements. It's not as though there are any upgradable skill trees or headshots or 10-hit combos to fall back on; making your way through the plot is the experience in Heavy Rain, and while Quantic Dream did significantly advance the art of interactive storytelling in its long-awaited PS3 exclusive, there were a few lacking elements that kept this game from fully realizing its potential. One of those elements was just, man, the way people talked was kind of weird. Just weird enough to throw off the natural feel of the story, at least.

Now, we're not trying to claim anyone speaks unintelligibly in Heavy Rain or anything. The acting itself is generally quite serviceable. It's just that, for a story that's so clearly set and grounded in a specific area of the northeastern United States, it's pointedly obvious every so often that many of the principal voice actors in the game aren't native speakers of American English. The largely European cast gets it right 99 percent of the time--but that makes the contrast all the more glaring when they subtly slip up. It's that stray inflection here or oddly enunciated syllable there that takes you out of the story and makes you think "Oh yeah, right, this game was made in a place other than where it's set." For such a narrative-driven game, every aspect of the production should enhance, and not distract from, the storytelling.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up:  Call of Duty: Black Ops, Dead Rising 2

Best Wii-Only Game

Super Mario Galaxy 2

No Caption Provided
We'll admit, it's maybe a little on-the-nose to choose a Mario game as the best game on a Nintendo platform, particularly when it's a direct sequel to a three-year-old title that originated most of its clever ideas. But none of that really matters, because Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just that good. This is Nintendo at the absolute top of its game, delivering bracingly inventive polygonal platforming action that builds on the sturdy foundation laid by the first Galaxy and a lush, playful art style that makes any technical arguments about the Wii moot. This is pure, unadulterated video-game bliss, and our pick for Best Wii-Only Game of 2010.

Runners-up: Kirby's Epic Yarn, GoldenEye 007

I think a lot of people don't give Mario Galaxy 2 enough credit. If you actually go back and play Mario Galaxy 1, you'll realize how dramatically improved the sequel is over the original.

But the accents makes sense in Just Cause 2 because the people you meet are not from US. The characters in heavy rain, CoD and DR2 are supposed to be Americans.

It's not only podcasts, most people who have heard a french-Canadian person speaking English can "pretend" to easily tell that it's a Canadian accent. I heard the accents several times over the course of the game, "Aboot" instead "about" being one of the main big give aways.

And the voice actor for the boy in the grave diggers story is really bad, I mean REALLY bad.
Admittedly a kid can be forgiven for not being as good at an accent but... Well it could've been done much, much better.

The category wasn't "worst US accent," it doesn't matter what accent it is that's being done terribly. The accents in Just Cause 2 are atrocious. It sounds like the voice actors weren't even told what kind of accent they were supposed to do, so they all made up their own. There's also a couple terrible Southern US accents in there for good measure.

I don't really get the accent gripe. People travel over the world, and you'll meet people all over the world that have accents because they originated from somewhere else. Like me, I am a canadian now but have a thick dutch accent. I meet tons of "canadians" here that have an accent, be it indian or russian or whatever.  All the GB  members have a different accent as well, is that weird? No.

I am not sure about HR, but do they specifically say that the people in that game were born in the US and have never lived somewhere else where they could've gotten an accent?

Yeah, well, it's all a matter of perspective, isn't it? Accents are grating when they're recognizable to you, so yeah Just Cause 2 can get a pass for most characters because they are just "foreign".

Case in point, the single game that grated me the most because of an accent was Resident Evil 4. Being a Spanish native, the thick American accents of all the villagers in Spanish were just unbearable in a game that was supposed to be happening in continental Europe. Imagine if the president's daughter in it had been doing a thick Liverpool accent and then spread that out for 80% of the game.

Yeah, it was bad. Way bad. Way worse than Heavy Rain. But it would have never made a list like that in the US. That's what Spanish sounds to them, I guess.

EDIT: By "American" I mean geographically in the American continents. That game liberally mixed a lot of Mexicans, what sounded like a little bit of Cuban and maybe some people from Miami. I guess they just made an open casting call in L.A. or wherever in the US they recorded the sound and took anyone that sounded like they knew the basics.

If Starcraft II hadn't of come out this year, the Wii pick would've been the easiest guess of the entire awards season, especially since Ryan didn't like Disney Epic Mickey.

@jozzy: I agree with you about the unnecessary accent gripe in general, but in Heavy Rain it is actually quite egregious.  Also, as a born and bred American, I must say I disagree about the GB dudes having different accents.  They all have variations of a common American accent--Vinny's being New York, Brad North Carolina, and Jeff and Ryan both have a pretty typical California accent.

Because all the "game" parts of Fragile were busted and boring.  Crappy combat, and relentless backtracking.  It's a nice story, but that's about it.  Far from deserving to be considered "Best Wii Game"

Again, the combat was passable. The only problem I had with it was that bows were shit. Other than that, not much of a problem. As for the backtracking, I only remember that when you were fetching items for the little girl ghost. That's kinda all I can remember for backtracking; the rest of the game was pretty damn focused on moving forward.

I think those accents were actually pretty accurate compared to actual Southeast Asian accents from places like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philipines. The only bad accent in the game was the main character's.

HAH - worst accent award! To be fair, they were just kids, but then again, it's the director's fault for hiring said kids in the first place. Child accents are a huge problem in most games - in Metro 2033, all the adults had (admittedly bad) Russian accents, but all the kids sounded straight-up American. In Heavy Rain, the kids sound like Androids from another dimension.

@l4wd0g: I am pretty sure Just Cause 2 did the horrible accents on purpose. If they wanted to with their budget they could of hired talented actors.Though the developers stated that they were going for a crazy over the top unrealistic experience and they wanted cheesy action film like dialogue and voices.Hence all the stereotypes.I think it was pretty well done in a dumb way, they didn't over do it like say Rouge fucking Warrior.

I think Red Steel is the most improved franchise.

Because Red Steel was pretty awful and Red Steel 2 is actually very good.   That's not me exaggerating either, the first game was literally terrible.  The second game was fantastic.  The only problem is that once you're finished playing Red Steel 2, there's not really anything to go back for.

I was happy with the choices for Most Improved... even though NFS had to be stretched to only include Shift and not previous Hot Pursuit games... but the one that stuck out to me wasn't mentioned, NBA 2K11 - which revolutionized the possibilities of how to do career paths past the basic legacy mode, inadvertently helped cancel Elite 11, and sold (and sells) ungodly to this day.  Nothing terrible about previous iterations, but this game took the bar, raised it, then stole it and moved it to another continent in terms of innovation.

You do realize that a French-Canadian is a native French speaker and therefore would have basically a French accent not a "Canadian" accent, right?

I guess I need to play some Dead Rising 2 before I can make up my mind.

Sidenote: here, in Canada, when I speak english and make sure I pronounce everything perfectly, they accuse me of trying to sound British ! LOL

Oh no, they are totally in the game.  In fact, the long jump-cloud combo almost breaks the game at points(but in an awesome way).  If you dont use those moves its basically impossible to get all the stars.

I agree with whoever said Red Steel 2 should've won most improved, Shift was a decent game and Hot Pursuit is great, while Red Steel was a horrid game and 2 is fantastic.

A little surprised they didn't mention the "Watch a Verizon ad, get an Achievment" moment in Alan Wake. While I agree that Shaun White is worst on a pure conceptual level, some of the Alan Wake stuff was pretty skin-crawlingly bad too.

Also, as someone else said, Donovan Hock's accent is the worst in the galaxy.
