Torchlight nearly made my list but ultimately replaced it with Demon's Souls. I'm glad it's on this top 20, though! :)

In my mind, Batman: Arkham Asylum won, because in a straight fight we would win :P

I'm using the same rules I use for all "Best of" lists these day.  Order doesn't matter.  If the game is represented somewhere on the list, I am happy.  I voted for 8 of the 20, so I'm good with it.  I didn't expect DQ V, a DS game, to make the top 20 and PSN's Flower is still too divisive among gamers.  But, I see by some comments that I wasn't the only one to vote for it.  Anyway, good list.  Not surprising, but that's kind of what makes it good in my mind.  Democracy in action.

Out of curiosity am I the only one who put Demon's Souls as number one?

While I'm by no means a fanboy of any system, it makes me happy to see a PS3 game getting universal praise.  It's about time the black machine that could gets a game like Uncharted 2 to take all the awards. 

No Plants vs Zombie? daaaamn

After listening to the GOTY podcast, I have had a strong urge to immediately run out and buy Arkham Asylum.  i actually re-watched  The Dark Knight as a result.  While I agree that Uncharted 2 was the best...I suddenly remembered that Batman is awesome. 

It's pretty impressive that U2 got more votes than these multi-platform games.  The next exclusives on the list (Infamous, Shadow Complex) have huge dips.

I've got to commend the Giant Bomb community for their impeccable taste. Solid list all around.

I'm kinda stoked that 9/10 of my picks were in the top 10.... (not a whole lot of hope for Brutal Legend...I can't explain why I liked that game so much)

I'm surprised that Torchlight beat out Plants vs Zombies. Both were quite well done, but I enjoyed PvZ a bit more, and expected a lot more people to play it than Torchlight.
  

I was curious, so I looked up some statistics, and I'll share it here for anyone else interested.

+ 95% (19) of the top 20 games were reviewed by the Giant Bomb staff. (exception: Demon's Souls)
+ 60% (12) of the top 20 were given 5-star reviews.
+ The other 35% (7) were given 4-star reviews. (Assassin's Creed II, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo ODST, NSMBWii, Torchlight, and Red Faction)
+ 9 games got a 5-star review from the Giant Bomb staff but were not chosen in the top 20 by the community. (Bowser's Inside Story, Dirt 2, Wii Sports Resort, Trine, Punchout, Rhythm Heaven, Flower, and both versions of GTA Chinatown Wars).

+ No handheld games made it onto the top 20.
+ The Giant Bomb community preferred Sony's exclusives this year over Microsoft's or Nintendo's. Sony had exclusives at #1, #7, #12, #17, and #20. Microsoft had exclusives at #8, #13, and #14 (with the semi-exclusive L4D2 at #10). Nintendo only had NSMB Wii at #16 this year.
 

Thanks to the Giant Bomb staff for putting this together. It had to be one of  the most enjoyable ways to vote for the GOTY I've ever encountered.

Also telling of the GB community, no sports game on this list.

Gah.  Who didn't vote Brutal Legend?

I'm disappointed in the lack of Demon's Souls coverage at Giant Bomb. In my opinion it's one of the most original, compelling and addictive games to come out in many years, and the outright disdain with which The Bomb, and Jeff in particular, spoke about the game, is hard to take. That Giant Bomb's community rated it so low in the Game of the Year stakes is, it seems to me, a reflection on the piss-poor way in which the game has been covered by the site. I remember the DS Quick Look, where Jeff  dismissed the game as looking "clunky", in a clearly annoyed and exasperated tone of voice, as if it was obviously an absolute car crash of a game. I kept waiting for a follow-up blog piece that corrected the many innacuracies and plain-wrong assumptions made about the game, but it never came. If this mockingly dismissive attitude has led to Giant Bomb's readers negelcting the game, then that is just tragic.

im really glad inFAMOUS made the top ten. the game is excellent and super addictive. 

I still don't see how Arkham came so close to GOTY. Does no one remember the several repetitive and awful fights with the big dudes? Or how the last boss fight was absolute shit? Or how the Killer Croc section was one of the worst things EVER? Also vents, detective mode and gargoyles. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the game, but damn, son. There be some major problems in there.

All great games, except maybe Red Faction.

I'm impressed to see so many PS3 exclusives in the list. Two years ago I would have called this list suspicious.

The vote between Uncharted and Batman probably wouldn't have been nearly as close if there weren't alot more 360 owners who couldn't play ps3 games. Batman had both ps3-only and 360-only owners  voting for it.

So does the Killzone franchise get the title of "Halo Killer"?
