Good News: PSN Back (Maybe) Within a Week, Bad News: Everything Else [Updated]

Sony confirms personal information obtained by outside party. That's fantastic.

No Caption Provided
Update 3: Valve has just told me that anyone who connected their PlayStation Network account to Steam via Portal 2 should not be worried, either.

"Steam has nothing to do with the PSN outage," said the company in the statement.

Update 2: Regarding rumors Sony may have notified banks days ahead of disclosing today's revelations to the public, I have since contacted customer service representatives at both Bank of America and Chase. I personally have accounts at both financial firms and the representatives claimed to have received no information from Sony about a mass breach of credit information.

Update:  For those who were asking, Sony has just confirmed to me there is currently no way to determine what password you were/are using on PSN. If you're worried at all, you should probably change your password used across the Internet.

Some users have suggested counting the number of "stars" in your saved password as a way to help determine what password you may have been using to access PSN. It's a start.

**

Sony has been frustratingly quiet about the problems afflicting PlayStation Network since the downtime started last week. Who caused the issue in the first place? When will the service be back online? More importantly, has the disruption opened up my personal information to the intruders?

One, Sony isn't talking specifics, with the latest update on the PlayStation Blog from senior director of corporate communications and social media Patrick Seybold only outlining that the company has identified "a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems."

Two, probably within a week--at least for some parts of PSN. "We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week," said Seybold. "We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible."

Three, the answer is yes. Here's what was available to intruders: "name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID." It's also "possible" that "your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers" were included.

Unfortunately, credit card details remain a mystery. "While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," added Seybold. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

== TEASER ==The continued air of "possibility" regarding how severely PSN was compromised, several work days and a full weekend after PSN initially went down, is not a particularly reassuring concept. I'd implore you to read Sony's full statement on the matter at the PlayStation Blog, as the company has complete details on what companies to contact regarding credit card fraud, should you notice any errant activity.

"We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience," reads the end of the statement. "Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information."

Stay tuned as more developments unfold. If you notice your personal information was compromised, feel free to drop us an email or leave a comment below.

Well I'm happy because PSN didn't support my country at all and only way I could get even demos was to insert false information.

Update:  Sony  claims that the credit card security codes aren't stored on the database. However, they also said it wasn't even ask for before... but now " While we do ask for CSC codes, we do not store them in our database."

The worst post for PSBlog:  Does this guy not understand how crazy he sounds?

I imagine this is been a nightmare for you guys. Its sad to hear our personal info wasn’t encrypted as well. But regardless, I just want it back online. I am surprised there is no mention of game content.

1) How will our download history be affected?
2) Trophies. Will these still be intact?
3) Friends list?

@Pr1mus:  You said it best guy. This generation Sony has completely dropped the ball. The higher ups are the ones to blame. Sony's E3 this year will be very interesting. This year was looking good for Sony. I'm curious to see how they will bounce back from this. Sad moment for Sony.

Not that I think that this will make info more secure in any way but since Sony is rebuilding PSN, they should let users change their PSN IDs. They're already going to make users change their passwords when they login so why not give the option of a name change while they're at it?

Sony is kinda like EA. Great and varied games but their management and PR is a catastrophe. They have all the resource and talented employees they need to dominate like they did in the PS1 and PS2 days but the suits in management just sabotage everything all the time this gen. And now obviously this.

I've been a fan forever of their games and consoles and while not defending them when they screw up i would just overlook said screw ups and concentrate on what matters, the games. But now this goes beyond just simple bad marketing or stupid Jack Tretton statements or whatever and their consistently poor track record this gen in regards to how they manage their business is appalling.

Hopefully this will be a serious wake up call for them.

The funny thing about this whole situation regarding the PSN security breach, at least for me personally is, it started and continues during me moving across town. By the time I have some semblance of normalcy in my new place, I'm sure PSN will be up and running 100%. Fo rme, I really haven't missed anything. I write this as my iPhone is tethered to my laptop, awaiting for the internet guy to do his thing here at the new place. Smartphones FTW.

They really haven't done themselves any favours over the last couple of years.
Removing OtherOS was just the start and all their fans are constantly asking for new features for PSN and the XMB, but nothing ever comes.

I personally don't play a lot of multiplayer online, so cross-game chat is the last on my list.

But, not having the XMB being built into games is just stupid really... :/

Rookie mistake when coding.

I don't think Valve would've gone to all that trouble and expense to integrate Steam for one title. They must've already been kicking themselves when the system was cracked wide open, but now I bet they really regret it.

This is one of the reasons why I don't use credit card to make online transactions, in this case the cardholders weren't the ones who f**ked up but it was the merchant who did, giving away customers' information due to outside malicious intent.

Excellent post Patrick. This is the kind of news video game media doesn't have enough of. People call themselves game journalists, but rarely practice journalism to this degree. Most post rumors, offer a bit of their own speculation and then say something like "we'll keep you updated", which usually means they'll wait till someone else does the work and try to be the first to post it. Here you've got sources, interviews with people outside of the game industry, and excellent, actually useful information. Thanks for making Giant Bomb even better.

On topic, I've been watching my online account activity since the breach happened and I suggest everyone else do the same. I already favor my 360 for multiplayer games, but I'll do so even more now. My PS3 has officially been relegated to Blu-Ray player and Uncharted machine.

@ptc: Not taking Sony's side on this one, but it's fair to say that if a hacker wants to hack almost any system they will likely find a way (btw, that doesn't excuse Sony from encrypting the data which they should clearly have done). MS doesn't have the best record when it comes to software not being exploited and I'll bet almost every one of those tech/gaming platforms will not be laughing too hard at Sony knowing very weil it could have been/might be them
