Good Old Games Adds Mac Games to Nostalgic Lineup

The service has added Crusader: No Remorse. That’s all you need to know.

I'm fully prepared to completely destroy my nostalgic perspective of Tex Murphy.
I'm fully prepared to completely destroy my nostalgic perspective of Tex Murphy.

The Mac went through a rough patch with games for a long time, but it’s on an upswing. It’ll never be on the same as PC gaming, but with Valve behind it with Steam, and Good Old Games announcing support for Apple’s computers, Mac users should be happy.

It’s made me the happiest boy in the world because it means instant access on this underpowered Air to Crusader: No Remorse, all of the Tex Murphy games, Syndicate, and many others.

Yes, that is the sound of me completely losing my shit.

(Also, I’m not sure what Personal Nightmare is. Maybe a decent candidate for Spookin’ With Scoops?)

You can view the entire GOG catalog over here, and filter by Mac.

GOG said it’s investigating the idea of expanding the library on GOG through WINE support, and plans to include new games on GOG every week.

It's mostly DOS and Indie stuff, but there are more than a few good games on that list. Good for people who own macs but want to play video games, I guess.

Personal Nightmare is terribad. Its successor, Waxworks, is somewhat better, at least. Awesome death screens!

It's a start though. They probably want to see what interest is like before they go nuts on it.

Great news, can't wait for the Linux announcement at some future point (hopefully before Project Eternity ships) as indies are already there on that platform (if you've already ported to OpenGL for OS X then it isn't a massive step further to get to Linux) and it seems like GOG plan to keep on expanding their global store in sensible ways.

As someone who can't afford a new PC but loves older PC games, some of which I remember playing on a MAC, this is awesome.

I wouldn't say that. More games are available but OS X performance is still awful for gaming, you need a powerful machine to play most games at decent settings on OS X, yet the same machine running Windows via Boot Camp will run the same games much better.

I remember when on the same Mac, I could play StarCraft II using OS X on a mix of low/medium settings with <30 FPS, when I ran it on Windows I could run high settings at 60 FPS. Exactly the same with a bunch of other games.

I honestly did not know there were people who spelled it this way until like an hour ago. The oversimplifying of the English language is atrocious, are people really that idiotic that they don't understand the difference between vowels? IT MAKES ME SAD.

E: Also Chrome totally flags catalog as a mispelling. Ha.

The most exciting thing they announced about it was revealing the game's full title - Cyberpunk 2077.

Also, Patrick, Waxworks is probably a better thing to check out than Personal Nightmare; although, you may as well just do both...

neat! I haven't really bought anything from GOG simply because SteamPlay is more appealing for me (and my wallet).

I've been patiently waiting for a Mac client of Desura. Listing just the mac games on the site feels like a tease.

Oh I thought this meant they added good old mac games. Escape Velocity, Marathon, Taskmaker, that stuff. This isn't nearly as exciting.

Though I can still just play that in Basilisk II, thats not hard to set up.

At first I thought this meant the ability to play Mac OS 6-7-8-9 games on a modern computer. Guess not. Since the Mac was 640x400 and higher resolution since the late 80s Macintosh II model there were a lot of nice looking ports and original games in that higher res. Dark Forces was rendered at twice the resolution of the Dos version. Wolf 3D ran at double the resolution with high resolution sprites. Prince of Persia 1 and 2 were higher res sprites and backgrounds.

I never played the Tex Murphy games back in the day, but I tried them out because they were part of a GOG deal, and I thought they were awesome.

So I think they still hold up.

Sweet. I've been buying quite a few games on GoG lately (I'm up to 60 now, including several compilations) without even owning a Windows PC to play them on. I've managed to get a few to work under DOSBox, but it's mostly been preparation for when I buy a new PC. Now, I'll also have some stuff to play on my MacBook.

Also, discounts on both Witcher games, SimCity 2000, Theme Hospital and Little Big Adventure? Have some more of my money GoG! The pay-what-you-want Interplay bundle is pretty cool too, though the only games I'm interested in are Battle Chess and both Fallouts, so I think I'll pass.

I recently replayed Under a Killing Moon after having not having played it in over a decade. It was my favorite as a kid and was totally expecting to get upset. Both gameplay and story wise it's held up way better than expected. A lot of jokes and references I didn't get as a young teen. Going to get around to the pandora directive soon too

I've probably played 300+ hours of Sim City, but I've never actually tried Sim City 2000. Maybe it's the kind of thing I can run behind an Excel document at work... Wanted to buy Syndicate back in February, so I guess I can do that now.

The funny thing is GOG's amazing installer already works great with WINE. I have Roller Coaster Tycoon, Icewind Dale, and Fallout on my Mac right now and they all work perfectly. All I had to do was fire up the GOG installer with my WINE application (I use Crossover).

Finally, the one thing that has been able to hold me back from jumping onto the Mac platform all this time since it's inception; the ability to play Crusader: No Remorse and Syndicate.

You might think I'm being a sarcastic PC-elitist, but I guarantee you that my above statement is at the very least, 85% true.

Can you guys start Quick Looking some GOG titles? There are many shows that look back at classic console games - Continue, Replay, even Giantbomb tried it with those Game Room Quick Looks and that Time Trotters thing -, but no one seems to look at the classic PC games that GOG is trying to keep relevant. Modern mainstream games suck and lack ambition. Looking back at what the PC was doing in the 90's and 80's would be interesting as shit. Stuff like Outcast was trying to do things Mass Effect doesn't even do. And it would certainly be a shock to the kiddies to see adventure games - that's right 12 year olds; they used to make games where the main point WASN'T to murder thousands of faceless, personality-free tools.

Part of me wants to say that they just call themselves GOG now, as they dropped the Good Old Games thing once they started carrying modern stuff.

Also, I'm glad to see that Mac users will get to play more games and all, but the Cyberpunk 2077 stuff was vastly more exciting.
