Grand Theft Auto V Gets September Release Date

Rockstar lets go of its traditional May release period for a bit of "additional development time."

Only Rockstar could get millions hyped to play a game featuring a dude who looks like this.
Only Rockstar could get millions hyped to play a game featuring a dude who looks like this.

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V finally has an official release date, and it's not quite what we were expecting.

After months of touting a nebulous "spring" release period, which seemed to all but confirm a date in the publisher's now traditional release month of May, Rockstar today announced that GTA V will instead be hitting retail shelves on September 17.

In a commiserative post on its official website, Rockstar officials chalked the new release date up to additional development required on the game.

Dear all,

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team

So, hey, we're not getting a May release, but we have an official, locked-in date (which could still slip at some point, but also shut up.) No new trailers or screenshots were released to sate the unwashed masses of the Internet, so you'll just have to settle for the media we already have posted. Sorry about that.

Certainly not. After the disappointment of the last one, I'm definitely going to wait a few months to see how players feel about it once the shine has worn off. The reviews aren't going to be any help, judging by GTA IV's reception. Personally, I'm hoping that Saints Row 4 still comes out this year even with THQ's unfortunate demise so I can just focus on that instead.

I give them credit for being this well-spoken and honest about it. I hope those who are looking forward to playing another GTA game will have a great time with it, even with this delay in mind.

@AGold: What does that change? It doesn't change the fact that PC hardware is just as liable to failure as consoles. Except when you have the exact same console being sold to millions of people at a time with the same basic production defect then you're going to have a spectacular clusterfuck on your hands - unlike pc part manufacturers where you have many to choose from so the failure rate is not as apparent.

@Missacre: I agree that it's best to hold off on launch hardware but I wouldn't say they are completely untrustworthy. Current consoles have been quite stable and competitively priced for quite some time now. It's not as if PC hardware manufacturers have spotless records either. My last dual GPU videocard from Nvidia basically steadily burned out. Everyone online said that those cards were faulty but they, along with me, only found this out several months after purchasing when they would start dying one by one. That doesn't mean I don't trust Nvidia with graphic cards anymore, just that I need to wait and choose more carefully next time.

In all honesty the Gamecube just like the Wii U were consoles that at release date were already hugely outdated. The Wii U just launched and it still doesn't perform as well as these 7 year old 36-'s and PS3's. Spec wise you also can't compare a console to a PC because the architecture isn't the same. It's not as if they plopped in a commercially available GeForce into the 360's PCI-e slot. Those cards are integrated and much more efficient than their PC counterparts because they skip a lot of needless steps that they would otherwise require to function inside a highly modifiable PC. I'm playing current generation console games and a lot of them look really good. They might not look as good as their PC counterparts but thats to be expected since the consoles are so old. Halo is a great looking console game. Doesn't matter what firmware updates they do or don't do when at the end of the day you're playing a gorgeous looking game on your 7 year old 360. Uncharted 3 is a great looking game as well. Gears of War 3, InFamous, Devil May Cry, so on and so forth.

I'm not going to try to change your mind here, but the current generation hardware is holding up surprisingly well and I expect the next generation consoles to do just as well if not better than this current cycle.

That's cool. Hopefully they announce soon the PC version of the game. I would hope it would come out on the same day.

New consoles can't be coming out this year. Rockstar must know something we don't...

I don't see why they'd release such a high-profile title so close to new hardware. Either Durango/PS4 are going to be Backwards Compatible [doubt it, especially in Sony's case] or the hardware won't be out until Q1 2014. Take-Two and Rockstar bank on these titles for maximum sales, and if anything this seems like it's only going to hurt them.

I'll still get it because I love GTA, regardless. Just seems odd.

I'm pretty sure Rockstar can afford to not give a fuck.

And I'll either be isolated away in San Diego or in the middle of a freakin' desert when this comes out, in all likelihood. Fannnnnntastic.

@Missacre: The next Xbox console will be running DX11. Video cards have been DX11 for a long time now, they aren't going to bother going back to DX10. Especially when DX11 is more efficient and will let them drag more out of the system than DX9/10 would.

Consoles in general won't be playing things at 60FPS any time soon. They are going to try and push them to their limits, to focus on shiny graphics. It's not about the consoles not being powerful enough, it's about most people on consoles not caring about 60FPS and being more receptive to game that look like Uncharted than that look like Call of Duty. The only reason PC games run at 60 is because most devs don't see the need to trick out the PC version to take advantage of the extra hardware.

And if GTA V is on next gen consoles, it could probably run at a higher framerate pretty easily as well as a higher resolution. I think you over-estimate the amount of power it takes to run a decent version of a Rockstar game. They aren't that amazing looking. And you're also under-estimating the sheer amount of time that has passed in the last generation. The way games render today is wildly different from the way they rendered when the 360 first launched. Games were still figuring out stuff like normal maps back then. Now we have an over-abundance of post processing, displacement maps, tessellation, and all sorts of fancy things thanks to advancements in the DirectX platform. On top of that, both the platform and the hardware utilizing it have become much, much more efficient and powerful. Think back on what the big bad video card was for PCs when the 360 launched. Or better yet, a year or so before it launched, when the tech was actually plucked out to be customized. And then look at a GTX 680. There's a pretty huge difference in both what they can do and how well they can do the same thing.

Next gen consoles won't be kicking any PC's ass, but if you think it won't be able to handle a resolution upgrade and still manage a boost in performance, you're either being silly, or assuming that it'll be a really sloppy/quick port.

Also, I don't think GTA V will go to next gen consoles. We don't need another GUN.

I'd like to know likely the possibility is that the postponement is due to next-gen development, sure. But then again, if GTA V was intended to be released (at some point) on next-gen consoles, that would have planned far earlier in development. It would be interesting to see if they announce at E3 that the game will be both a 360 and PS3 title, along with being a launch title for one (if not both) new consoles. GTA V will sell so many copies regardless, I don't think Rockstar would be worried about splitting their market (for consumers who would postpone a current-gen for a next-gen purchase).

It'll obviously do incredibly well, but this just seems like ridiculous timing, since even if they release it for the next generation of consoles, it will have been designed for the limitations of the current generation. I really wish the timing had worked out such that it was going to arrive a couple years into the next generation. If nothing else, I hope it doesn't take another five years for the next iteration of GTA. I really want that reliable open-world experience that takes advantage of more than 2005's hardware and I don't really want to wait until 2017 for it.

I reckon one of the oh shit moments at Microsoft's E3 conference will be them showing off game play of GTA V on the next Xbox.

I don't think the next generation's gonna do THAT well. Sure, they might get 1080p, but that's about it. I doubt they'll get 60fps, and for sure, no DX11. They've already compared the next-gen consoles to PCs and it turns out that they're getting hardware equivalent to a 2008 mid-range PC.

I think DX11 is a given, this will be a beefy console if they are going to go for another 8 year cycle. You can't compare PC hardware to Console development, the Xbox 360 is a mid range system from 2004 and Halo 4 looks amazing.

You give Microsoft and Sony way too much credit. They're not gonna be that great, trust me. I haven't seen them myself, but judging from the past, you can pretty much see it for yourself. Also, the reason Halo 4 looks good is because of firmware updates, which are used mainly to keep optimizing the meager resources the consoles already have. Even then, Halo ran at 30fps. There are some games that do even worse than that. Even if they do get DX11, they're not gonna properly utilize it till probably the last 2 or 3 years of the generation. Always happens that way. That's the reason the last console I owned was the Gamecube.

Well if the last console you owned was the GameCube then you're not exactly an authority on how well current gen games look or play - since you apparently didn't play any. Unless you're one of those guys that totally doesn't own a console but plays a lot of console games at a friends house.

True, I don't own any of the current consoles, but I've seen the specs and way more than enough of actual gameplay to determine that. Come on, when the current-gen consoles came out, they were already severely outdated and they had the equivalent power of mid-range PCs of the time, which really isn't saying much. OK I did buy a Wii U, but I think that's considered next-gen. So yeah, I might not have a concrete argument, but I'm not trusting Microsoft or Sony with consoles, not after the whole RROD fiasco and the $600 Blu-Ray player.

@ottoman673: Why would you doubt the next Xbox would be backwards compatible? It's essentially a PC. The PS3 on the other hand has a completely different architecture.

Because the Xbox 360 is using a PowerPC chip, and that is what the PS3's cell processor is essential except with the SPEs. Where the architectures between the 360 and PS3 differ greatly is the RAM allocation, with the PS3 having half dedicated solely to video/graphics. That is why Linux would only see 256 MB when you installed it and why games like Skyrim have so many problems and why games like Uncharted look so good. It would be easier to have the Original Xbox be backward compatible with the new Xbox720 since from reports, the Xbox720 will be using an x86 chip from AMD where as the Original Xbox used an x86 chip, basically a pentium 3.

Oh wow. I guess I had that wrong all this generation. I must have skewed the whole "Easier to port to 360 than PS3" that developers keep saying from this current generation.

All the additional development time in the world won't make this game look like a piece of shit on the 360 or PS3. At this point in the cycle why would you NOT put out a PC version to take advantage of all that processing power? Why would you limit yourself to the current gen of consoles when you're making an expansive open world game?

It's just going to be a disappointment.

After playing Sleeping Dogs on PC, they're definitely strangling themselves by building exclusively around modern consoles. I'm sure GTAV will be perfectly okay, but even GTAIV felt like it was constantly brushing up against the limits of the tech.

Sleeping Dogs having a "City Density" option is one of the coolest things to hit an open-world game, something that would be impossible on the extremely limited ram of the PS3 and 360. It's really strange that a company as big as Rockstar would drag their feet on taking advantage of a PC as well; especially with the modding scene hitting GTAIV pretty hard.

Rockstar would literally be wasting money if they put this on nextgen systems that close to launch. There's a reason launch games are generally not stellar: no install-base to sell to. Even today if you sold a GTA game to every single person who has bough a WiiU it would be underselling compared to what you can get on the systems with a dedicated installbase. These games are HELLA EXPENSIVE. At the time GTA4 was the most expensive game ever made.

I see this as lining up for more GOTY nominations. Much easier to remember a game from September than May. The shine has not worn off yet for that.

It's not like people would have forgotten a GTA game by then. They really don't need to pull those kinds of stunts and it's not like GOTY awards from random websites pay their bills.

People (Brad), completely forgot about Diablo 3 last year and it has a similar hype and publicity train behind it.

What makes you think he forgot it, rather than he just liked 10 other games more? A five star review doesn't guarantee it end of the year consideration, especially when he had a bunch of 5 star games in his list already. It's about the games that stuck with him as being overly special or memorable, not it's review score. D3 was a great game, but there were plenty of great games last year

I enjoyed Diablo 3 when it came out, then I quickly forgot it even existed a few months after that.

He was raving on it for months and he didn't mention it at ALL during deliberations. It was just strange to me that he was so freely throwing out a 5-star, glowing review, but nobody talked about it during the millions of hours of podcasts that happened late last year. It was just suspect, is all.

I think a lot (not all, a lot) of people who played Diablo III got bored of the grind and while they enjoyed the game immensely for a while, they did not go back for more. I haven't played it personally, but I have a friend who played it like 15 hrs a day for about three months, then just completely quit. Became a grind-fest for him.

That's what it was for me. I loved it so much at first that I talked three friends in to getting it for some sweet-ass online play, which happened once, and then we all kind of forgot about it a couple of months after. I don't regret my time with it (100+ hours over two characters), but it didn't have much staying power.

Just FYI, it being released near to the speculative date for new hardware isn't really a problem. The install base for 360 and PS3 is still going to be massive at that point. It's not like everyone is instantly going to drop the several hundred dollars on a new console and then sell their current one.

It's an interesting amount of time to delay a game. I wonder if they think 'this needs four more months' or if they think something like 'this needs two-and-a-half more months but we can't release in mid-summer because of x and y....'

@xyzygy: 360 is a PowerPC, based off IBM's tech developed for the CELL processor. So no, it's not a PC.

This sucks, but I'll look on the bright side of this. This means they will improve it and make it even more awesome!

And don't forget The Last of Us is still coming out in May so it's not all bad news. That game looks like a beast!

@Little_Socrates: You've been analyzing their reviews a lot :D

I used to care about the specifics but I have now come to the conclusion that I don't anymore (and also probably shouldn't) as my opinions stray very very far from theirs most of the time (specifically like in your example with Nintendo Land). I only take it seriously when they love or like a game and just ignore most of the negative stuff since their reviewer approach is very different from my consumer approach to games (I can't stand "purchase advice" reviews).

Also, oh hey there's another GTA game coming out. :P

From a commercial stsandpoint why wouldn't you do it. You just release the PC Version after the new consoles are out to stop console owners whineing they got the duff version and also can be used the advertise their port for the new consoles for early adopters how might not even have a PS3/Xbox360 to play it when it comes out as a GOTY version with all the DLC.

Sucks for a PC user like myself thou.

Super crazy theory:

Orbis and Durango are released in September, GTA V is a launch title. The extra months are needed to improve the game up to new console standards, that's why no new media was released today!

Oh man id like this to be true..."Ps3/360" is just a code word for next gen :)

Hell of a sixth sense.

I wish I had the ability to know how a game will turn out based on a trailer and what hardware it's on

As long as they spend the extra time making sure it's nothing like GTA4 and a lot like Vice City and San Andreas then were still on track.

This is great news I think, means I don't have to debate between playing The Last of Us or this, not to mention the imminent glut of games from March... so yeah, more times for games. The back end of the year was looking pretty slim anyway.
