Green Day: Rock Band Hands-On

The kings of pop punk are getting their own Rock Band game, and Harmonix swings through the Giant Bomb offices to give us a look.

No Caption Provided
When asked to describe a sequel, or even a game inspired by other games, I have a really despicable habit of reductively declaring "it sure is [insert franchise name], alright!" Now, I'm prefacing my hands-on impressions of Green Day: Rock Band with this acknowledgement because, well, Green Day: Rock Band sure is Rock Band, alright. If you've seen the track list for the game, then you already have the bulk of the information you'll need to know whether or not this is a game for you. But I want to be clear here that this is not a bad thing. Regardless of whether you think the band warrants its own Rock Band game, Green Day has a deep catalog of seriously catchy-ass pop-punk songs that work really well for this format.

The track list for Green Day: Rock Band is almost exactly the track list I would've come up with for a Green Day Greatest Hits compilation. All of Dookie, all of American Idiot, most of 21st Century Breakdown, and the singles from Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning. Boom, done. I might've included some tracks from Kerplunk!, but it's not surprising to learn that no multitrack recordings for those songs exist. Aside from the 47 songs on the disc, the game will support the six songs from 21st Century Breakdown that have already been released as Rock Band DLC, though it's kind of a bummer that those DLC songs won't be included on the disc. Don't expect any other DLC for Green Day: Rock Band either, though Harmonix's Chris Foster expressed interest in bringing some of the Green Day side projects like Pinhead Gunpowder and The Network to Rock Band. You'll be able to export all the songs from Green Day: Rock Band for play in Rock Band Prime, though for a $10 premium.

Harmonix pretty much set the gold standard for how to approach single-band music games with The Beatles: Rock Band, so it's unsurprising that Green Day: Rock Band is looking like a more modest version of that, including the three-part vocal harmonies and the broad autobiographical structure. The game will feature three venues and three different versions of the band, each representing a different era for Green Day. The Warehouse, which is where you'll play Dookie, is an amalgam of the sorts of house parties and squatter spaces the band played in early on--look closely, and you'll see the Bookmobile that Green Day used to tour in. Milton Keynes was the site of Bullet in a Bible, Green Day's 2004 concert DVD, and will serve as the venue for songs from Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, and American Idiot. Finally there's Fox Theater in Oakland, which is where you'll play songs from 21st Century Breakdown

No Caption Provided
All three seem suitable venues, though to be honest, what jumped out at me was what wasn't there. Green Day's performance at Woodstock '94 always struck me as one of their most well-remembered. I asked about the omission of 924 Gilman Street, the famous Berkeley, California venue where Green Day got its start, and the rationale seemed reasonable: by the time Green Day had released Dookie, the band had already been exiled from Gilman, which has a staunch policy of barring major-label acts from playing, so such an inclusion would've seemed disrespectful.

What's most exciting about Green Day: Rock Band for me is that maybe I'll finally learn some of their lyrics, despite the fact that I've been singing along with them in my car for a good 15 years now. I'm also intrigued by the bonus materials, which is where Harmonix's MTV connection really flourishes, giving them access to lots of footage and photos from old interviews and concerts. As a teenager growing up in the Bay Area in the mid-90s--where everyone and their brother, cousin, stepmom, etc. had an "I knew them when" story about Green Day--I have always been particularly susceptible to Green Day's smart-ass charms, so expect to find me playing Green Day: Rock Band on its June 8th release date... all by myself.

Never was much of  Green Day fan, even during that span of time in middle school when my taste in music consisted entirely of pop-punk, so I'm gonna give this game a pass.

I love (newer) Green Day. I don't care what anyone says, I know I'm probably the only Opeth, Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, or Katatonia fan that considers American Idiot to be one of his all-time favorite albums.

That being said, I don't think very much of their material would be fun to play in Rock Band, and I really hate Dookie. I wish this was DLC, so I could buy American Idiot, a few select older tracks, and a few 21st Century Breakdown songs (Peacemaker, American Eulogy, Horseshoes and Handgranades).

I think this one carries a bit of negativity on its shoulders for some recent music.

I love Green Day, me love long time....with the Metallica release from Guitar Hero you kind of got the band most people demanded up front. But for a punk band, it's hard to think of any as deserving or logical right? We all have our favorite punk bands but Green Day has the catalog those others don't. They've been around for a long time guys! You need good songs and a lot of them. I can't even think of more then 3 bands off the top of my head who last this long and made that many albums.

I can't wait, I'm not a HUGE fan of Green Day but I've heard a fair amount of songs [More from the older albums, less from the new] but I've liked everything I've heard so I'll probably be picking this up around it's launch.

Does anyone know if the export is just a download of all tracks, or does it rip them from the disc ala AC/DC LIve? I ask because my connection isn't the best, and it would take a day and a half to download a gig and a half. It's the bare minimum for playing well online but nothing else. >_<

I'll be curious to see how this game sells, not because I don't think Green Day isn't profitable, but because Rhythm games just don't seem to be selling like they used to. Sorry about the bold.

Totally down for this game, can't wait actually. I need a good care free rhythm game experience since the shine has been rubbed off of rock band 2 at this point. People who shit on green day just do it for no reason other than they heard someone else doing it. Hating popular stuff is....really popular. You said it best though Ryan, they have some catchy ass songs that can raise the spirits in a room and bring unity so everyone can just have a good time, and that's what matters. If you want "technically" impressive music in your games, then you're an ass, because you play the music with plastic instruments. Just be happy with whatever you like and not upset that a game is coming out that you don't want. Not like you have to buy it. Jeeze.

If they put out a disc with just Dookie, and still sold it for the same price, I'd probably still get it. SO many stars aligned on that album.

I respect your taste in music. I love Opeth and Porcupine Tree as well, and while my 2 favorite bands are Dream Theater and Iron Maiden, I can still find room to respect artists like Green Day, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga even though I don't actively listen to them.

Green Day Rock Band will most likely be a great game for most, but the aspect that's going to hurt it most for some of us is the lack of difficulty. The Beatles' songs are far more challenging and - deceptively - intricate than anything Green Day has ever written... this is going to be excruciatingly boring for those of us who've played the Rock Band series for some time now.

I'm actually really disappointed by this set-list as a Green Day fan. Only 3 tracks from Nimrod? Where is Redundant and Scattered? No 1039 or Kerplunk! tracks are a bummer as well. I'm still buying it though.

Musically, Taylor Swift is a very talented composer for her genre and her lyrics are often autobiographical and very well-written. Sure she writes a lot of love songs - everybody knows we need more of those, right? - but at least they're very personal and genuine.  She also hates Joe Jonas so we should all be on her side, right?

And Lady Gaga is actually incredibly talented. She went to the New York Tisch School of Arts and wrote long analytical essays about religion and social issues. I despise dance music in general, but Lady Gaga tends to write some clever metaphors - just read the lyrics to Poker Face - under the guise of superficial pop-crap. Sure she's VERY eccentric - although, I've always felt that she's been doing some kind of Andy Kaufman-like stunt ever since she became famous. She used to dress like a normal woman and write philosophical piano ballads so there must be more to this chick - but at least she appears to have a true passion for what she does. That's all I want from a musician.

Reminder: I don't listen to either of them, but I respect their work. I can barely listen to anything but Progressive Metal these days...

I haven't played RB in a looong time. Rented the Beatles version and it was.....what I expected. Not great but not bad either. To be honest I'm just done with the whole 'guitar play'n' music genre. Which is too bad 'cause I'm sure I've spent over $100 on DLC for both GH and RB. EA and NOvision certainly got the best of me.
As much as I like Green Day I think I'll stick to listening to them on my stereo rather than "playing" along to them with another plastic peripheral that I don't need.

You can't go from the most influential band of all time (The Beatles) to some generic pop-punk band that has raped the Ramones of all their dignity. What's next Rock Band: Jonas Brothers? The only way they can save this franchise is if they release what has been on everyone's mind.... Yes -- Rock Band 3: Weird Al Edition

People really seem to be "butthurt" by this game. That's one thinig I never liked about music; its the differences that people cannot ever cope with and needs to express it vocally with the typical "fuck this shit".

Huh, only 3 venues to play all these songs in? Now thats a bit lazy. But hey, it should be all about the music.

And for those of you not "respecting" artists like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift properly: Shame on you! No really, they write "deep" songs and they´ve obviously got "deep" personalities that have not been manufactured by record labels at all. Obviously, since everybody who writes songs about themselves has way deep personality. Oh, and I also believe they´ve replaced all of Keith Richard´s blood once and the Kings of Leon are actually brothers, just like the White Stripes are sibblings but also married. See, there are no lies in the music business.

@Godzilla_Sushi:  I'm not a fan of the genre, but Buzzcocks and The Offspring are in the same vein and have roughly the same amount of studio albums. But, of course, neither of them are as commercially viable as Green Day.

I think the idea of a whole game dedicated to Green Day is a little silly and will (hopefully) not sell many copies. But I'll just go with the politically correct phrase, "This game is just not for me."

Offspring would have been more interesting, but Green Day are more popular so that's that.

They're nowhere near my top 50 bands of all time, but I'd still enjoy the balls out of playing this game with friends. It's another band that everyone at least likes a little bit unless they're a miserable cynic or have some underlying resentment towards Green Day for running off with their girlfriend or something. Anyway, this will be everything we expect it to be, and probably nothing more.

Also, it pisses me right off when band-specific games are released and people somehow think that they're losing out.... losing out on what exactly? That Shadow Gallery Rock Band title that Harmonix are so desperate to make?*

As for Green Day RB, if the industry hasn't gotten the idea that the rhythm game genre is starting to drag, I have a feeling this will be what hammers that home.

It's got about 47 more songs on the disk than I care about, so I happily skip this. Won't complain much though, since Harmonix already released an awesome AC/DC disc.
