GTA V to Feature Three Different Main Characters

Perhaps taking a cue from its own DLC, GTA V will have three protagonists.

We don’t know much about Grand Theft Auto V, but that’s about to change. Rockstar Games’ promotional campaign for the spring 2013 release kicks off with the latest Game Informer cover.

The big news: GTA V will feature three main characters, a first for the series. Color me disappointed Rockstar Games continues to focus exclusively on male protagonists, but given how much better the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV was (focused, efficient storytelling), I'm already way more interested than I was a few minutes ago.

To everyone upset about no Female lead, I agree but it doesn't jive well with what Rockstar has been going for in story telling up to this point. Every GTA has been parody and parodies of iconic film. What crime films have you seen with a female lead? Of those films how many of them are exploitation?

Yeah they have no material to riff from. So why do it? That said, let's get some good self aware exploitation, maybe kill bill style with a female lead. In a perfect world, I would have a female lead be like Molly from Episode IV from The Walking Dead. She's my favorite character in that game and probably my favorite female character in a videogame up to this point. Gary did a great job of creating her.

A female lead like Molly(extreme sports guru kind of chick), and have her star in some Point Break-esque DLC, surfing, skydiving, jeeps, heists in presidential masks. The works.

Can you imagine?

Fuck man now I want to go watch Point Break.

Awesome news. If it was CJ, Claude and Tommy, I think everyone would explode in excitement.

Don't know why people clamor for them. I'll be honest, I can't remember shit about CJ or Claude's characters or story.

In my mind, GTA games are like Final Fantasy games. New game, new cast. Why bring on old characters for no reason other than in service to fans rather than story? While certain characters are great, the games are long enough that you feel you've spent enough time with them and have seen the end of their character arc. So there really is no need to see more of them. Just keep bringing on new characters and new stories.

Claude is barely a character, so it's not surprising you don't remember anything about him.

"How about a female protaganist?" Really?

NO. Fuck that. How about they tell whatever fucking story they wanna tell.

And if/when they decide to have a female protaganist, I'm confident it would be great. Implying that Rockstar is somehow sexist or would make her stereotypical is dumb. Remember when people found out about BoGT? Tony turned out to be a great character.

As with every Rockstar game, I'm looking forward to this.

Cool, but it can't be right. Tommy would have to be way older than CJ or the GTA 3 guy (Claude)?

I was thinking the same thing, maybe the two guy white guys should be swapped in that picture.

Not being a female is a non-issue and I hope for the love of God this doesn't become an issue.

While that would be cool and Rockstar has shown they can write a pretty good female character, don't have that take away from the idea of getting a more thought out, shorter plot.

Pfft where did this "No female character?!!" thing came from? as in having one could change anything other than giving videogame website writters more things to complain about female leads.

There was a rumor some time ago that the lead for GTV would be a female character. So apparently everyone assumed it was true and now they are mad at Rockstar for not doing what they imagined they would do...it's kind of dumb

I had wanted to play with a base of diverse characters of both genders, I'd even like to have a way to change the race, gender, and orientation of the characters. Therefore, it is somewhat troubling that they want back to the well with the old characters.

I would have preferred playing a gang banger who could have been white, asian, latino, black, or native american. I'd like to play a NY gangster who is white, asian, latino, black, or native american, or a Miami gangster who was white, asian, latino, black, or native american.

I cannot imagine why they didn't make a game that allowed a bit more choice in 2013. Not because it is trendy or fair, but because it speaks to the diversity that is on the ground in California. If they want to tell one story with a specific character they should DO SO, but when they have three (and probably more) that are rigidly defined it just starts to seem like a miss opportunity.

On female lead: I think the Point Break idea is really cool. I thought for sure that Rockstar would have a female lead for this game. 3 more guys? What more can they do with these three that hasn't already been done in the previous games? I think having a female character would have added a lot more options with regard to the narrative.

Really? A plug for complaining that there's no female character? Pandering right there. Otherwise I bet they want us to thing the guy on the far left is going to be the scumbag when it's probably the guy on the far right... middle guy might be the first protagonist who's story is weaved around the other two.

For me it only strengthened the likeability of Marston remaining so rigidly faithful like that. Though restricting her as just a cameo in the Undead Nightmare story was pretty shitty.

Not thrilled about that, It could potentially limit or narrow the openness of it.

Unless it actually is CJ, Claude and Tommy, cause then I'm totally down with that. That would be too cool. Highly doubt it obviously. Sure it will be a good story anyway.

If you want that level of customization, go play Saints Row because that's not the sort of game that Rockstar makes. The Houser brothers focus on telling the stories of very specific characters, typically that center around some particular aspect of the American experience. Imagine taking Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, and Omar Little and mixing and matching them...that doesn't work. Those characters are products of their particular background, and they have different stories to tell as a result.

I wonder how this will play out in the free roaming part of GTAV such as can you swap between the three when you are not doing a mission? Some part of me does wish that I could play a female character in this but that won't detract from my enjoyment of this game.

most people are saying they're disappointed that there isn't a female protagonist, I don't see people saying they should just include one for the sake of one (what they really should have done was made a latino character considering this is LA but still), there is a difference.

Also it depends on how you define stereotypical because it's not like rockstar men aren't stereotypical either (pretty sure one of these guys is the "I wanted to get out but I got pulled back in" guy)

@Manhattan_Project: Totally agree with you 100%. I don't know why I was so surprised that that was everybody's first reaction to this news. If it was a female protagonist, they'd have to spend half the story dealing with that simple fact, having her stand up to sexist guys around her, and they'd probably buck the female stereotypes by just writing her as though she were a male character anyway. Like you said, I'd rather they just tell the story they want to tell.

He knows. It's just what the grammatical mistake implies. Really, Patrick meant from Rockstar's own DLC, not GTA IV's. It's an easy mistake to make, and fun to take literally.
