GTA V to Feature Three Different Main Characters

Perhaps taking a cue from its own DLC, GTA V will have three protagonists.

We don’t know much about Grand Theft Auto V, but that’s about to change. Rockstar Games’ promotional campaign for the spring 2013 release kicks off with the latest Game Informer cover.

The big news: GTA V will feature three main characters, a first for the series. Color me disappointed Rockstar Games continues to focus exclusively on male protagonists, but given how much better the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV was (focused, efficient storytelling), I'm already way more interested than I was a few minutes ago.

This just in-- Rockstar bases their GTA characters off of cultural stereotypes.

There is currently no cultural stereotype for "violent female career criminal."

Damn you, glass ceiling-!

Downloading the issue as we speak...but the servers appear to be getting hammered a bit, I imagine demand for this issue is higher than normal.

Also if anything, the GTA universe would be a terrible place for a female protagonist, since she couldn't be a cop or anything (except a possible role in DLC) because a lot of people who buy GTA, really buy it for killing people and just doing dumb shit in. Also you have to take into consideration if she was a crime leader, her back story would have to be pretty troubled since women who are into crime, do some shit that a lot of people look down on, and this would probably have people cry out against such a shameful characterization of a woman. Not to mention in GTA, most nice women go to die, corrupt women get even worse.

It seems a bit more odd to me that you would expect them to just for that reason alone.

I'm bummed that all three are dudes. Crime sandboxes are best enjoyed by playing as sassy black ladies, like I did with Saints Row 2 and 3.

expect? no. I expected it to have a single main character, so I don't know what you thought my expectations were, but if they're going to have three main characters in LA, why not? Just seems a little odd is all.

don't tell me you wouldn't want to play as Cesar from SA, I mean come on.

I would have preferred playing a gang banger who could have been white, asian, latino, black, or native american. I'd like to play a NY gangster who is white, asian, latino, black, or native american, or a Miami gangster who was white, asian, latino, black, or native american.

I cannot imagine why they didn't make a game that allowed a bit more choice in 2013. Not because it is trendy or fair, but because it speaks to the diversity that is on the ground in California. If they want to tell one story with a specific character they should DO SO, but when they have three (and probably more) that are rigidly defined it just starts to seem like a miss opportunity.

If you want that level of customization, go play Saints Row because that's not the sort of game that Rockstar makes. The Houser brothers focus on telling the stories of very specific characters, typically that center around some particular aspect of the American experience. Imagine taking Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, and Omar Little and mixing and matching them...that doesn't work. Those characters are products of their particular background, and they have different stories to tell as a result.

No problem duder. Some of these mandates people are laying down about the race and gender of game characters is a bit much. Let the writers decide on the most fitting character to tell the story they want to tell.

Who cares about having a female character?? Play Saints Row 3, Mass Effect...I don't see how it matters what the gender of a character is, they can write whatever characters they please.

The thing is, Saints Row doesn't really give a shit about gender. As for Mass Effect, it's not the same kind of story. In games I like a story I would never be able to experience. A female protagonist is something that doesn't happen often and I thought they would be able to pull it off in a crazy world like in GTA, but oh well.

Well not to start a pissing contest but I would think that your finding the absence of a Latino character to be "odd" would mean that you had a certain level of expectation there.

And what kind of protagonist I want to play as has nothing to do with what we're talking about.

I was hoping for a more Saints Row approach to character creation, oh well, probably wouldn't service a Rockstar story, although they should do it some game.

Full customization like that just would not work in a GTA game. Protagonists in GTA games are always extremely developed characters and they're all completely defined in such a way that changing their race would completely destroy that character.

Wait, wait, wait. Everyone, can we talk about this?

According to Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos is bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IVcombined. Yep. There's wilderness, a military base, and even an ocean floor to explore underwater. Kotaku

Because, damn.

Info from the article on the characters:

Michael (dude on the right):

Retired and in this early 40s. Former bank robber in witness protection. Money is running out and he needs to get back in the game. Doesn't get along with his gold digging wife and has trouble understanding his two teenage daughters.

Trevor (dude on the left):

Career criminal in his early 40s. Drug user, loose cannon, former military pilot that worked with Michael on a few jobs back in the day. Has a neck tattoo that says "Cut Here" with a dotted line around his neck.

Franklin (center):

Mid 20's native of Los Santos. Currently a repo man working for an upscale car dealership. He's looking to hustle and make his way up the ladder and hooks up with Michael to do that. The young and capable one of the bunch. Tired of being held back by some of his idiotic and dangerous friends.

Nice. So that particular rumor turned out to be true. I wonder how many of the others will turn out that way. I personally hope the one about how cops will try to identify you for a couple days after you reach a sufficient wanted level is true, and you can't let them look at your face for too long or you'll trigger them (kinda like Assassin's Creed).

Also I'm glad they're bringing back what looks like a crazy dude as a protagonist. What made Tommy Vercetti so appropriate was the fact that he was a psychopath and he knew it. That dude doesn't look like he gives a damn that he just beat up an old lady with a baseball bat, and that's the way I like my GTA protagonists when I go on rampages.

A little more info:

  • It sounds like you can switch between characters at almost any time, including during a mission at some points. Google Earth style zoom out and zoom in when swapping between characters.
  • Bicycles and scuba diving (explorable detailed ocean floor).
  • A single city stretching from beach fronts to a fully explorable Mt. Chiliad. Miltary base among other features.
  • Focus of missions is having multiple complex multi-tiered heists like "Three Leaf Clover"
  • A lot of side activities, some of which are unique to a particular character and only make sense for someone with their background. Includes things like yoga, triathalons, full-fledged golf game.

GTA always seem to throw curve balls when it comes to their playable characters, I still remember the outrage from some people over playing as a black guy in San Andreas, so it's a bit of a shame they still haven't given us a female character.

I know it would alienate a certain group of players (although I'd consider that a good thing) but having 3 different characters this time seems like the perfect chance to do it, especially if you can focus on any one of them you want.

@Chaser324: honestly switching between characters like that makes it a lot less interesting to me; I'd rather them go in arcs myself, if they're going to be around each other at all times then that means that they'll be in the same story (if you get what I'm saying).

And thanks for this! Having them all know each other was unexpected; I figured this was going to be like in GTAIV, with 3 characters that only directly interact on very few occasions, but they still manage to influence one another's story in strides all the same.

Guess this means there'll possibly be a lot more missions like the one where all three arrive during that diamond trade mission in the museum. Always love stuff like that! Giving you multiple perspectives of the same situation.

Don't know why people clamor for them. I'll be honest, I can't remember shit about CJ or Claude's characters or story.

In my mind, GTA games are like Final Fantasy games. New game, new cast. Why bring on old characters for no reason other than in service to fans rather than story? While certain characters are great, the games are long enough that you feel you've spent enough time with them and have seen the end of their character arc. So there really is no need to see more of them. Just keep bringing on new characters and new stories.

I think it would just be cool to have some continuation between GTA games, and I was hoping this would be the very first one to do that.

Did you not play any of the pre-GTAIV games? All of those games were hugely connected, with a shitload of recurring characters and a fuckload of references to events in other games. Starting with GTAIV they're also starting a totally new continuity, meaning all the previous stuff is a completely seperate story. They did say there will be at least some characters who will be returning from GTAIV.

Yeah, the credits sequence for TBoGT inferred that Packie may at the very least play a part somewhere in GTAV.

  • GTA IV style casual encounters with people on the street and RDR style random occurrences and dynamic missions (examples include picking up a hitchhiker, finding some wrecked cars in the desert surrounded by dead bodies, and chasing down a purse snatcher).

Lifted from C&VG

• Three main characters are called Michael, Trevor and Frankie.

• A quick menu can be called up to switch characters, the camera pulls away into a Google Earth-style vantage point and then drops into wherever the chosen character is

• Trevor is described as having a "maniacal personality"

• Trevor is in Blaine County, a barren, rundown desert region filled with bikers, meth heads and other people from the fringes of society

• Characters can "flick off" people and people react differently depending on the area. In a rough-and-tumble

• neighbourhood the reaction will be different from someone in a posh boutique store

•Rockstar's playtester pours a trail of gas away from a vehicle and drops a zippo lighter on it, the flame travels back and causes a huge explosion.

• Franklin is seen on Vespucci Beach looking for a car he's to repossess

• Waterfront activities include a muscle beach gym

• He drops the top of the car once he gets in

• Ammu-Nation is back

• Each character has his own personality motivation and skill set

• They go about their daily business when you're not in control, so you might find them in surprising situations when you take control of them again

• Each character has a fleshed out story arc

• Complicated, multi-tiered heist missions inspired by GTA IV's Three Leaf Clover are "peppered" into the game

• Heists are a big theme

• Rockstar is addressing mission diversity in pairing characters, it showed off a mission involving all three characters

• The trio need to perform a snatch-and-grab to get the FIB off their backs

• Trevor berates security agent guarding a chopper, Michael urges him to calm down but he keeps running his mouth, he only agreed to do the mission in exchange for help springing his friend Brad out of jail.

• Franklin isn't to comfortable with Trevor

• The three change outfits and rapell down the side of a skyscraper, when they arrive players take control of Michael rapelling down, the mechanic is reminiscent of Rainbow Six Vegas

• The musical score seems to react to the action

• They extract the target by holding him hostage with one arm while pointing a gun at interrogators with the other, at that point an icon appears giving the player the option to switch character

• You can stay as Michael and try and pick of the enemies or select franklin, switch to his perspective and snipe them from afar.

• Transition is smooth and camera angle helps you adjust

• During the chase through Los Santos the player can switch to Trevor to pilot the getaway, snipe the other pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle out the back of a chopper as Michael

i feel like if there was any company that would say "fuck it, lets shake it up and have a female protagonist" it would be rockstar.... perhaps too much pressure from throwing off or losing that DUDE BRO crowd who would be stupid about having a female protagonist.

I hope it keeps the serious mature atmosphere of GTA4 and TBoGT rather than going for something Saints Row-like.

(GTA:SA was also good, as was VC, and GTA3, GTA2, GTA London 1969, GTA..)

I think the lack of a female protagonist is in this is because it seems like the story is going to be very much "different guys brought together by crime" and there's probably gonna be a lot of "they're not so different after all" going around in the story, so having one of the protagonists be female wouldn't work in that.

• During the chase through Los Santos the player can switch to Trevor to pilot the getaway, snipe the other pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle out the back of a chopper as Michael

• Rockstar is leveraging cinematic tricks learned from Max Payne 3

Fuck... This all just sounds unbelievable. Really surprised to hear how there's even like some sort of squad mechanic at play here between the three characters. Wonder if this means you may be able to play the entire story in three player coop?

Three dudes, some guns, and a pizza place. It's like a sitcom!

Awesome news. If it was CJ, Claude and Tommy, I think everyone would explode in excitement.

I meant the actual protagonist going from one game to another, sorry it wasn't clear.

That wouldn't work, really, each GTA game tells a very different story, you couldn't do that with the same protagonist without it being weird.

Maybe this way the stories won't be so drawn out. Also I agree, it would have been nice to see at least one of them be a woman.

It's easy to sit on the sidelines and tell somebody else to take a risk but I just don't think it's in Rockstar's best interest to introduce a female protagonist.

Rockstar's protagonists are typically some pretty damaged dudes with huge flaws and unlilkable qualities. You drop these types of characteristics on a female character and you could be looking at some serious backlash. I know Rockstar's a big boy and knows how to take care of itself in the face of controversy but maybe they feel this one isn't worth the time and stress.

Or maybe they just aren't good at writing female characters?

Stole the words right out of my mouth.

Says more about the person playing than the game itself =)

GTA characters are supposed to be brutally flawed complete scumbags. a female character wouldnt fit very well. plus criminals are scumbags so they'd treat the female character like shit the entire game, or they'd make her 'equal" in the criminal world and have it all seem "off". a female character just wouldnt fit.

its probably a positive for females anyways. having your gender not be associated with violent crime is a good thing.
