Guitar Hero: King James Version

Christian rock gets its own Guitar Hero clone.

If Konami's guitar game ever got big in the States they could have called this
If Konami's guitar game ever got big in the States they could have called this "Jesus Freaks."
Personally, I'm of the mind that as soon as Man electrified the guitar, we embarked on the dark project of communing with demons, using the six-stringed instrument to allow Satan into our midst. It would culminate with the release of Judas Priest's 1982 album, Screaming for Vengeance.

So it's with some trepidation that I gaze upon a pre-order page for Guitar Praise: Solid Rock, an upcoming PC/Mac product from your friends at Digital Praise. Could this all be a devious trick? What happens if I play these songs backwards?

The game sounds like a pretty standard Guitar Hero clone with over 50 songs that reflect Christian values, online scoreboard support, support for two players (complete with a lead/bass split), and four difficulty levels. Also? The guitar is wireless. You know, provided these guys went and got the masters for all of these songs and split them apart so that the guitar stops playing when you stop playing, this looks like it's about all of the features you could possibly want out of a Christian rock game.

Here's the song list for the game. By putting DC Talk's Jesus Freak in the game the developers have... well... they put I song I've heard of in it. Congrats?

  • 12 Stones - Broken
  • Bride - Same Ol' Sinner
  • Caedmons Call - There You Go
  • Casting Crowns - Lifesong
  • Chris Tomlin - Made to Worship
  • Darrell Evans - So Good To Me
  • David Crowder Band - Foreverandever Etc.
  • Day Of Fire - Reap and Sow

  • Kutless - Hearts of the Innocent
  • Lincoln Brewster - Spin
  • Nate Sallie - All About You
  • Nevertheless - The Real
  • Newsboys - Something Beautiful
  • Paul Baloche - Rock of Ages
  • Paul Baloche - All The Earth Will Sing Your Praises

There are actually some good bands on there. Skillet, for it's part, is actually good. Try listening to their song "Comatose" and you might like it. They have a pretty decent variety. I'm not big into this genre but I've heard of a decent number of these before.

Where is Creed?  Anyway, everyone knows the best bands are affiliated with Satan.  This game probably can't come out on consoles.  Its a modern version of those crappy Bible games for the NES.

If this is actually real and I can play it with a GH controller, I'll rent it. Otherwise, no go.

As someone who's heard most of this stuff... let me say that it's not making Christianity better, it's just making rock worse. I'd much rather have read an announcement for guitar hero: van halen :-(

I actually have heard many of these songs. for 2 reasons.
1) my ex-girlfriend was a hardcore christian
2) my friend Leppy was in a christian band and listens to christian rock at a friends house.

ive basically heard of half the songs there.
I'm pretty sure someone will ... do something... on the internet... illegally...

...

and i'll just use my USB GH2 Guitar...

I will only buy if I get to play as Jesus and the end level is a epic guitar solo battle against the Devil. Well, I guess Guitar Hero already did that last part.

That's pretty hilarious if you ask me. It has potential and hopefully it will pull through and become the first good Christian themed game.

I don't know how to react to this. I thought you meant LeBron James, which would be absurd. But even if LeBron James had his own Guitar Hero game, it would be more interesting than this. :(

Hey more power to them for makin this game.  If  people want to play a game that uses Christian music then that is their decision. Why cant there be a space for Christian Rap or Rock Music. While I may not enjoy it,  others sure can.

Played it....kinda meh...but I read on kotaku they're dropping a Satanists Edition next summer with Deicide confirmed so I might pick that up..

But on a serious note: what is the christian message anyway? They basically want to condition you with dogmatism the same way extreme muslims do. Only difference is that christians have a superior military usually and don't have to resort to *as* desperate measures. So I give this a thumbs down, but I still respect their right to put out such products.

I listen to Skillit, not Skillet.

The only half decent christian bands I've listened to at one point or another are MXPX and Switchfoot, but maybe those dudes aren't christian enough.

Son of a bitch, you beat me to the Skillit joke. Damn you.

I'm a Christian who enjoys a bunch of Christian rock AND an avid gamer, so this is pretty sweet.  I don't know all the artists and songs on the list, and it's still pretty cool despite only being a PC/Mac title...it's understandable why it's not a console release because I can't imagine the audience is large enough to warrant the cost, and it might even stir up some controversy in the media with because console releases carry a higher profile...but my biggest surprise was from many of the reactions in this comment thread!  Some people are in awe, some even in disgust, that this release is REAL!  I mean, is it really that hard to believe?  Just like I voiced subtle predictions of how cool a Guitar Hero game would be with more instruments before Rock Band made it a reality, I actually also said the same about Christian rock and how it'd be cool to play songs that I like in a Guitar Hero/Rock Band format.  This just happens to be an official iteration of a genre that appeals to some people who enjoy Christian music, and believe it or not Christians just so happen to be a group that's starved for professional, quality pop media!  :)  While this release is likely not top quality like a Guitar Hero/Rock Band product, it's still pretty cool in my eyes that some Christians out there got the stones to try the idea and put it out there.  I just think it's so funny how so many people seem to have such a diluted and skewed perspective on Christians, lumping us into a category of extreme zealotry, enough to immediately condemn the very prospect of a Christian rock game.  C'mon people.  Grow up!  I love my Rock Band, and I know I'll enjoy rocking out to some of these tunes because I just so happen to love Jesus too.  What's there to hate?

I am a Pastor and video game fan.  While I own Guitar Hero 3 and play more than I should, I do not think that this game will be of the same caliber as other rhythm games that are currently out.  Many of the songs on this list are rock (Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Kutless) while some are not (Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, Lincoln Brewster).  I think this game will please many but leave most unimpressed (insert Darth Vader joke if you please) with game play, not song choice.

The site putting this out is quite funny how it's putting this at $100 that mainly only the christians out there that like this music & don't think it's blasphemy/vile/whatever/etc. will wind up buying. Since this is going on the pc & the lyrics are going to be displayed in the game (probably in place of animating a band) so everyone can sing until the game gets hacked all to hell & back. Frankly I think that if this winds up on the shelves & goes gold that it will be as notable as the bible game that came out on the Xbox/PS2/etc. Who knows, I guess they wanted to make this for church camps or other retreats but that would cut the time they spend inside of sitting around reading the bible or hymns or ignoring the other religious/philosophical views out in the world.

Weird.   I recognize several bands from the list from listening to a lot of Octane (hard rock channel) on Sirius.  12 Stones, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Skillet get a lot of play on Octane and Squizz (XM equivalent).  Had no idea they were Christian rock bands or that their songs were Christian themed.

I wonder why there's no Evanescence or Creed on the list.  Those two bands are clearly Christian influenced, but with more mainstream appeal.  Probably costs quite a bit more to license their music, though.

Cool concept, but it's only for PC and it's by a company no one really knows. Which means, you'll be spending one hundred dollars on a game that will probably have no downloadable songs, be mediocre compared to other guitar games, and unless your computer is hooked up to your HDTV, you'll be playing on a really small screen.

As a Christian, I think this is cool for some of the stricter people around who don't like the songs in GH or RB but I'll be sticking with the classics.

For those who claim rock (and roll) has little to do with the church, it should be noted that rock does owe some of its stylings directly to gospel music, as do some of rock's other musical antecedents, such as country music and rhythm & blues:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_and_roll

As for what constitutes "the devil's music," there's a long running history of considering newer popular instruments as evil in the church, most recently culminating in the resistance by certain pockets of Christianity to using drums and/or guitars (or any instruments in some cases) during worship. Christianity also has a long history of assimilating cultural forms and expressions into itself, however, and this musical co-opting would jibe with the idea that God is the Creator of all good things, including allegedly good music (the form, if not the lyrics or authorial intent).

At any rate, as a Christian I can appreciate quite a bit of secular rock -- that isn't blatantly Satanic. The Devil can't have all the good music to himself now, can he?
