Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Will Support Kinect, But 'Won't Affect Core Gameplay'

Microsoft says Kinect support won't 'affect the core gameplay experience.'

It's no surprise people are pushing back on the idea of Halo being augmented with Kinect.
It's no surprise people are pushing back on the idea of Halo being augmented with Kinect.

When Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary ships later this year, it will support Kinect.

Microsoft did not make any such announcements at E3, but a GameSpot interview with Microsoft Game Studios chief Phil Spencer revealed Microsoft's intentions to have Kinect hooks.

When I asked the company for specifics today, however, Microsoft was coy.

“It’s no surprise we’re exploring ways Kinect can enhance game experiences in authentic and meaningful ways," said the company. "The Kinect features we’re exploring with Halo: Anniversary are additive and will not affect the core gameplay experience or alter our mission of delivering a faithful recreation of the original game. That said we have nothing else to share just yet.”

Another statement released by 343 Industries community manager Jessica Shea on the Halo Waypoint message boards provided a little more clarity and an important phrase: optional.

"The Kinect features we're exploring with Halo: Anniversary are optional and won't affect your core gameplay experience," said Shea. "Our mission, from day one, has been to deliver a faithful recreation of the original game, and we remain dedicated to seeing that through to completion."

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is an HD remastering of the original Halo game developed by Bungie Studios. 343 Industries and Saber Interactive are collaborating on the update.

Meh, I'd like to play with the graphics upgrade, but I could care less about Kinect.

I feel kind of unreasonably excited about this release (not the Kinect support, I don't have that). I had a ton of fun playing singler player Halo 1, co-op with my buddies, and even a few 16 player system link LAN parties. I feel like I shouldn't be this nostalgic about Halo, but I guess I am!

I don't really see why people would be upset with Kinect support. It's obviously going to support gamepad controls, and won't require the Kinect for any portion of gameplay. Whether they shoehorn in a full Kinect-control experience, or just make the team voice chat better over Kinect, it's all just gravy on an already good deal. I'm kind of hoping the Kinect support is good, so that I can justify getting one with Child of Eden.

hey at least it's optional. Nothing worse than a gimpy motion control scheme shoehorned into every game whether it needs it or not *cough*Wii*cough*

That would be if they were actually recreating the main reason people love this game - multiplayer.  The truth nobody really seems to be acknowledging here is that Halo: Combat Evolved was good for two major reasons.  One, it transferred first person shooter controls to a controller in a way that your average person could grasp.  Second, it lent to a great - and at the time new - multiplayer experience.

I have a feeling the game will be good.  It will be a serviceable reminder to those who enjoyed the original and a fun distraction for those eagerly anticipating Halo 4.  However, I do not think this will be a great game - certainly not as great as the original.  This is because, as I mentioned before, the two biggest draws to the original game are now lost.  The first person shooter has effectively migrated and flourished on consoles - working controls is no longer enough to get you a lot of attention.  Second, the multiplayer, which could serve as one of the stronger nostalgia pieces of our time, is abandoned in favor of Halo Reach's multiplayer component - one that is both familiar and far too prevalent to allow this to feel like anything more than a map pack.

This game will be fun.  We know that because we played it several years ago.  It will make its money and run its course in no longer than the time it takes us to finish its campaign.  This being the opening act of 343's Halo career makes this more than a little disheartening for the future of the series when you see how willing they are to do things the safe way.

I hope this recreation doesn't mess with any of the weapons and how much ammo or damage they have or do, that pistol never gets the respect it deserves in that series.

If Halo CE aniversary is supporting kinect, you can bet Halo 4 will too.
Message to microsoft: stop trying to shoehorn kinect support into games that don't need it, or benefit from it.

So what's the point? I don't understand what these guys think they're accomplishing by inserting some random half-cocked Kinect support in a game if it's not going to affect the "core experience." That basically means "entirely pointless and will go ignored by nearly everyone." If you're going to try and make something for Kinect, make it totally Kinect controlled or Kinect-only. These half assed and easily ignored measures do nothing for showing off the tech.

So what does everyone think it could be?

I doubt it has anything to do with multiplayer unless they are also adding kinect support to reach, as the multiplayer is the same.

So it is either a menu navigation or singleplayer thing.

Maybe it could be directing squadmates? But considering you couldn't do that in HALO:CE and they are not altering the code too much, i cant see that happening.

My best guess is that it will either be something really silly, like throwing your hand in the air to throw a grenade, or some sort of menu navigation...

Hmmm they are also adding those terminals to the game, maybe the terminals all have kinect minigames in them?

Eh, its just a feature I'll never use. As long as they don't make it an integral part of the game I don't really care.

I could actually see them create a "Machinima theater" mode, just so you  could create Red VS Blue-style machinima movies. Kinda like those Kinect apps Giantbomb here played around with on the last Whiskey Media Happy Hour, where Jeff made all those bizarre poses during "Kinect Me"? I'm sure Rooster Teeth would appreciate it.

I totally agree , that is a very meaningful feature   , something this technology can actually do

Halo forge with Kinect , also something that can be very interesting. I did spend a lot of time on Forge with reach , and i they can fine tune the calibrations to work while sitting and work with finger tracking.
 It would be very cool.

Pretty frustrating to see the same smug, over-entitled 'core' gamer sentiment come out yet again, regardless of what the announcement is. Though I hate perpetuating the 'casual' / 'core' divide, I undoubtedly fall into the latter category - but Jesus FUCK it makes it hard for me to identify with when that's the company I supposedly keep.

Kinect gets blasted for being too casual. Now it's being derided for encroaching on less casual titles. And you still wonder why Microsoft's marketing has shrugged and shifted focus to that audience?

For the record, I don't own Kinect, and my interest in this release is minimal - but Goddamn, if it's not affecting the base game why not shoehorn this shit in? Give Kinect owners a reason to keep experimenting with the tech in as much software as possible.

@Xpgamer7: Seriously, if Kinect allowed you to augment standard FPS controls by leaning around corners I would actually start to consider the product. It wouldn't run into the viewing angle issues of something like head tracking in Forza 4, because you wouldn't need to rotate your head at all. Pure lateral movement. Developers?

You what will affect core gameplay? Microsoft annualising Halo to the F'in ground. Not only we (gamers, no Halo fanmen) had to suffer through terrible three Bungie Halo games, now we need to "experience" another terrible one in the series? Just let 343 take a stab at this boring ass series. *As you can see, I am not a Halo fan, and with that in mind, I have alot more interest in a new Halo game rather than seeing a remake of an old, out-dated and boring game*

Of course it will affect gameplay, that's what introducing a new gameplay element does.
Or they wouldn't do it.

And I knew they'd do that. They've been trying to implement it in various non-kinect games recently, it was obvious their long running blockbuster series would to.

..wow people are blowing this out of proportion.
The kinect stuff will be cool little things like using your hands for precision video capture in theater mode, or maybe the option (not the requirement) to play with it in campaign. But its not like they will change the game to make you inferior in Multiplayer without it.
Thats what they mean by "It wont effect the core game". Not Core Gamers, but the actual game. So pretty much if you have a kinect you can feel cool when you outfit your multiplayer spartan, but your still going to play Reach multiplayer with a controller.
its amazing how they can make a whole statement talking about how you DONT have to do something cool, and all you people see is "AHHHH THEY ARE RUINING THE GAME!!!!"

incorrect. You could only play HaloCE xbox multiplayer on lan. While some people did play every day with 4 of their friends in the living room, or brought 2 xboxes together, MOST gamers just played the campaign over and over. Remember, Halo was BEFORE every good game had to have multiplayer. I played the Halo CE story twice as many times as every other halo game combined, and that was WITH friends and people who i could split screen and Lan with.
the multiplayer pretty much raised the multiplayer bar, but not everyone who played Halo 1 had the knowhow to Lan party or the cash to but multiple controllers for their buddies. And WAYYYYYY less people played it on Computer (Where you could online multiplayer) than on xbox.

that being said, i do hope they include halo ce multiplayer (even if its just 4 player) into the system.

LOL Please do this, 343, and force players to say Stupendo even here in Halo.

In fact, just put that bit from Harry Potter into this game.

I have a Kinect and like it, but it just doesn't work with shooters unless they build it from the ground up spesifically for shooters, like Child of Eden.

To pull the index (it was called the index right?) out of Captain Keyes you have to stand in front of kinect and shove your hand in a jar of mayonaise.

@Sevan: The Halo: Combat Evolved campaign mode has some levels which are widely regarded as some of the most boring and poorly designed levels in first person shooter history - The Library, for instance, is infamous for being nigh unnavigable.  These levels were only accepted at the time because the selection of console first person shooters was limited to put it lightly.  After all this time, and seeing some of the most creative and original level design in games like Portal and BioShock, it's going to be very difficult to go back and enjoy ourselves.

The biggest thing that would tickle the nostalgia nerve - arguably the only reason you'd play this game - would be to bring back the original multiplayer.

See, this actually worries me because what we've seen from the E3 Ubisoft Conference show's a guy crouching and opening his hand like a crazy person to shoot, wich is something i'm not really comfortable with, you know, having to do that. Let's just hope they do the implementation the best way possible to see if i can finally bring myself to play with kinect.

yes, because nostalgia is all about comparing the elite present to its lacking past.....
Halo outsold most of the fps games in history, making any statment that there was something severely wrong with ANY of it rather silly. When a game is widely regarded as sonething bad, it dosnt do well (ie duke Nukem forever).  The library is an instance where someone TRYING to critique the game will notice it, but someone just playing for fun will be annoyed by... but then completely get over it.
the point of this game is not to show up current titles (its a 10 year old game with improved graphics. ie Duke Nukem forever). The point is to tug on your heartstrings while at the same time not hurting your eyes with horrid graphics. This game is only meant for hardcore halo fans. they had no intention of wracking up another 8 million new gamers with a 10 year old game.

@Sevan: Which would make sense if they were faithfully restoring the entire game.  It's a cop out because they see that the multiplayer base for Halo Reach is massive and they want to attract that crowd.  I'm not saying that Halo: Combat Evolved is a bad game; it was great fun.  I am saying by not restoring the multiplayer of the game they are overlooking a rather large portion of the "hardcore" Halo fans who are nostalgic for this game for reasons other than it had good controls and neat guns.

meh. Halo 3 is more or  less a revamped version of 1. You can make it almost exactly the same, minus the parts people bitched about in CE (pistol. invincible warthog). It wouldnt make any sense for them to create a lesser version of something that has already been  replaced when they could instead guarantee new life into the current Multilpayer.  Those Hardcore Halo CE multiplayers never stopped playing on PC, which has more stuff anyway, so really there isnt a market for it.

Was this ever debated? How stupid would you have to be to think it was going into the gameplay?
