Here's the Sound of One Chainsaw, Um, Chainsawing

If you cut a dude in half and nobody is there, does it make a sound?

Today is the day that I'm learning how to crunch videos through our system without having to waste Vinny's oh-so-valuable time. So here, check out this video of Cliff and friends talking about putting together the rip-roarin' sound effects in Gears of War 2.

Can't say why exactly, but apparently today is also the day for me to go from "Man, Gears 2 is just a bunch more Gears" to "Hey, I'm totally ready to play more Gears!" Hopefully there's enough larger-than-life action sequences in there to justify my newfound interest.

You know what bugged me about the first Gears, though? Enemies don't flinch when you shoot them. They just sit there soaking up bullets with ropey blood flying everywhere until they die. From this footage, it looks like that hasn't changed in the sequel, and it's probably too late to add in some pain animations this late in development. But if--I mean when--there's a Gears Part Three, I hope you can see those Locusts really feeling it when you unload your Lancer into them. Brad Shoemaker on Google+

Good job Brad. Vinny won't be needed anymore.

Yeah your weapon no matter how loud seems just a bit less powerful when it looks as if it has little impact on the target as you unload ammo into them.

I'm glad there is a GoW 2 for those fans but by the end of GoW 1 I pretty much was done with that game.  I don't think I'll be picking up # 2.

Oh hey, cool. This releases on my birthday. Guess I know for sure at least one thing I'll be getting.

My favorite composer of video game music is Jeremy Soule. Since his work on Total Annihilation I've absolutely loved his compositions, and every game I've played that features his music has always had an exceptional score that I've wanted to listen to out of the game.

awesome! sound is the most important factor for me, apart from the basic gameplay in any game. this sounded great!

CliffyB is three apples tall.

The real one, not the fakey fake one that posts on GiantBomb.

OMG ...it's just so dorky if someone just imitates the sound of a weapon or machine ... Seeing Cliff doing it, makes me sad, that I did (and still do probably) it too ...

@MindChamber: Thanks, you just made my day. But you have to admit, yeah, it's crunchy ;)

Gears Of War 2 is definitely looking big in terms of content and about the Enemy thing, your absolutely correct, the Enemies  animation doesn't really reflect as if they are being shot at.

Great vid, Brad.  Im ready for more Gears!

I completely forgot that Cole is really, really lame and borderline racist.  And the voice actor doing Fenix needs to hit the gym or something if he's going to be in things like this.

I hope there's actually a story this time.

Nice video. I sort of agree with the visible damage statement, but first, did you mean like animations that don't slow them down? Or animations to show them stumbling, flailing/reeling from a shot, etc? If the latter, it would have to be applied to the player as well, and that would probably detract from the fun of the game.

Just my opinion. :D

Nice vid, Brad.  Glad to see you getting your chops on the editing tools.

"I told him it had to be crunchier and he said, What does that even mean?" lol

@IrishJohn
he has to go to the gym more to be the voice of fenix? i didnt realize working out had any affect on someone's voice...

Good stuff, always love these behind-the-scenes tidbits.

I like how Young Clifford has enough money to roll around in a convertible with a stereo that accepts memory cards.
Then again, it is to be expected that the producer of one of the best selling games for the 360 rides in style.

why not save money and just have yung cliff do all the sound effects with his mouth???  like in police academy

All in all, this video reinforces a big fat yawn toward Gears of War 2.

Good to see the Cole Train is back in full effect.

This game weighs more than it should.

@Brad

Well, the bugs may not react to being filled full of lead, but players do online, so there's a step in the right direction. ^_^

...and was that Carmine I saw in the MP footage!? YES!
