Here's What Resident Evil 4 Looks Like On The iPad

Real video games!

If you haven't heard yet, the brave adventurous lads over at Tested were busy tearing apart Apple's latest must-have device the iPad over the weekend. All well and good if you want to see the silicon guts of yet another obscenely priced doohickey (and you do, right?), but what if you just wanted to see some games on the thing? Not talking Trism or Mafia Wars here. Real video games.

Here's Capcom's first stab at iPad gaming: Resident Evil 4. Perhaps you've heard of it.

No Caption Provided

Predictably, this just looks like a slightly enhanced version of the existing iPhone version, though Capcom touts these features as being upgraded over that one. Still doesn't exactly sound (or look) like it reaches parity with the console originals though.

  • High-resolution graphics optimized for the iPad’s larger display.
  • “Visual Pad” control system makes gameplay a fluid and intuitive experience. Players can engage in running gun fights against crowds of enemies, climb ladders, equip binoculars and jump out windows.
  • 3rd person perspective camera for a panoramic view of the action.
  • Shake the iPad to reload.
  • Play through “Story Mode” to unlock ”Mercenary Mode”, a separate game mode with pre-set goals, weapons and conditions.
  • “Coin Shoot” shooting gallery mode where the where the goal is to destroy as many blue coins as possible within the time limit.
  • A total of five difficulty levels: “Beginner”, ”Normal”, ”Professional”, ”Hell” and “Extreme”

I hear that onscreen control business is the same technique being used in the new iPad version of Geometry Wars as well. Can an iPad-upgraded version of Street Fighter IV be far behind?

I was in an Apple Store over the weekend that had stacks of the thing sitting behind the counter, which made me stop and think for roughly 2.478634 seconds about throwing down and leaving with one. But since I already own a MacBook and an iPhone, I realized there aren't enough turtlenecks hanging in my closet to justify yet another Apple product. Who among you did take the plunge with an iPad this weekend, and who bought some games on it? How's the experience holding up for you so far?

Hey, while we're still sort of loosely talking about Resident Evil (and while I'm rambling), take a look at the trailer for the next RE flick that came out of Wondercon this past weekend.

Supposedly Mirror's Edge for the iPad is actually really good. Having neither a MacBook or an iPhone, this is slightly enticing...hmmm....

I wasn't told there would be fresh Resident Evil footage.

Oh lord, it's in 3d, with unnecessary objects flying at the screen.

(concerning the RE trailer) Really? they are advertising a camera system? That is their hook... not directed by the man that brought you blah, blah, and blah, but a camera system. This movie is going to be awesome.
I have seen all the RE movies, but RE3D will be skipped. I make it a point not to support this 3d fad.

With the Resident Evil film franchise I can't help shaking the feeling that they're saving the worst for last.

Considering the iPad has only slightly upgraded specs over the iPhone, I'm personally not surprised that the game looks quite similar to it's iPhone counterpart.  There most likely won't be many games that can produce graphics of quality comparable to even a netbook.

Guess: the high resolution they are touting is probably them making the game run in the native resolution of the iPad instead of going the DS XL route and blowing up the same game.

Hmm not to confident about RE4 working with touch screen. I already have trouble moving around in FF on my iPhone.

Also how bad is it that I would rather see Afterlife than Avatar? Mindless zombie flick with massive plotholes GO!
I can see why RE fans would hate it though. Also this should mark the return of TANG.

For a second there I thought it said guest apperance by James Cameron. And I was just thinking, can the Resident Evil franchise get any worse? Luckly Cameron himself dont have anything to do with Afterlife after all. The film is still gonna suck thou.

When the iPad cost about $250, I will probably grab one assuming there are some good games on it.   I don't have a ps3, and it's cheaper than this big iPod, that has a lot more to offer me gaming wise.   If it was something I could actually do work on as well and replace my labtop, it might be another story.

I picked one up at launch as I happened to be in LA that week.   I want a first gen for development and building in proper support for the device in my "iPhone Apps".

I grabbed Worms HD and Civilization Revolution and they seem to work really well.  Civ Rev seemed to have some control issues, which I wonder if its due to the developer not having a real iPad to test with before launch.

It's really fast, feels much faster then the iPhone/iPod Touch.  You can immediately tell just using it, but I also noticed while playing some upscaled 3D iPhone games, they had a much better feel, like they were running and a good framerate (30+).

So it's faster and has a bigger screen, and I'm sure that is what a lot of people will say about it.  In use, those are actually meaningful.  It does feel like something different, and it works well. Typing works great too.

GiantBomb.com looks perfect on it; if only I could watch GiantBomb videos on it! Need any help with an HTML5 solution? :)

@Haoshiro: Just curious but would they need to purchase a licence to be able to encode their videos in h.264? And even if they did, wouldn't this mean it would only work for WebKit browsers like Safari and Chrome, leaving Firefox and IE behind?

I 'm a HUGE Resident Evil fan. The kind that that believes 1-3 are undoubtedly the best, and RE4 and RE5 are great games on their own right, just terrible Resident Evil games. I also believe the first Resident Evil movie isn't so bad, it's got a great musical score, but the other two are garbage.

However, am I the ONLY one that thinks Afterlife kind of looks awesome? Hahah, I mean it's just so far from what Resident Evil is it looks like a ridiculously awesome movie. The special effects looked pretty damn sick! I hate the whole throwing objects at the screen in a 3d movie but this looks like the kind of movie that it will actually make it more awesome (read ridiculous). It just looks like the freaking Matrix right about now. Like the kind of movie that you go to see with your buddies and just end up cracking up at the outrageousness that you're witnessing. I'm really into movies, and while I love the powerful dramatic works, there's definitely room for movies like this.

I'm amused that the "World's Most Advanced 3D Technology" consists of taping 2 cameras together.

@dezvous: I'll agree with you, I was never an RE movie hater, because I found them to be really fun Popcorn flicks. This one is basically trying to throw in as much Fan Service as possible with Chris, Wesker, the Majini, etc. so I'm really looking forward to it.

@Guibone: That would depend on what they have setup now, many sites have been serving H.264 content via Flash players for awhile now, so I don't believe any extra licensing would be needed in that scenario.  There are solutions that work in everything but IE, look up SublimeVideo by Jilion.  But you wouldn't kill the flash player, you'd just do a check, if Flash isn't present, load the alternate player.

What's wrong with the level geometry and lighting? Maybe I'm misremembering how good the Gamecube/Wii versions of the game looked, because the iPad is technically an equal to more capable machine. I'm thinking maybe not the graphics hardware, since the GPU in both the Gamecube and the Wii were custom made and stand up a little better than their low-end desktop counterparts of their days.

Also, I realize this is just a port of the iPhone version. Still... irksome.

I didn't know Darth Maul was in Resident Evil 4.

In all seriousness, it doesn't look HORRIBLE. But I can't imagine ever wanting to play Resident Evil 4 like that.

As for the movie, we're in a sad state where "World's Most Advanced 3D Technology" is something you slap into a trailer now.

@CH3BURASHKA: it is sooo much more complicated than that. I worked at Panavision in Hollywood last semester, and let me tell you, when you're dealing with two huge cameras, and 1000's of feet of film, the apparatus to deal with the weight is a very complicated procedure.

@Haoshiro: I did not know that. Very cool. Get too it GB.

I know of a workaround for Firefox but I didn't know they officially supported h.264 though.
IE has a plugin that acts as Chrome. At least to support html5 video for Youtube.

RE4 seems to be on everything these days, it's an old old game, it's time to leave it alone, no matter how good it is.

I'm not a fan of this idea, however I do think the iPad has great potential, but in my opinion, games should  be crafted specifically for it.

Basically, just like a genre like rts has to be made differently on consoles than the pc, it has to be made completely differently on the iPad. I think this device is great for indie games, very unique and wierd games, and, obviously, casual games. Anyone who is thinking of trying to make a game of one of the standart genres, has to think very thoroughly about the changes they need to make to make it work and make it fun.

It looks too smooth. Not as gritty as the Gamecube or Wii versions.
