Hey, DOOM 3’s Back on Steam!

After a long-fought campaign, our national nightmare is finally over.

America had an election last night, and id Software listened: DOOM 3 is available on Steam again.

Vanilla DOOM 3, mind you, not the somewhat mangled, more expensive, and distinctly lacking proper flashlights version that was recently released, DOOM 3: BFG Edition. The original, stripped down (and moddable) DOOM 3 was removed from Steam after BFG Edition was released, but after some outcry, id Software told me it was looking into having the game reinstated in some capacity.

Mod support and better-loooking flashlights are reportedly coming to the BFG Edition in a patch, but that one will also cost you quite a bit more. BFG Edition? $29.99. Regular ol’ DOOM 3? Just $9.99.

@JEC03: I hadn't even realized it wasn't on Steam. I will sign that petition.

Prey with proper compatibility.

Fallout 3 with proper compatibility.

Let's get this done.

Just a word of advice: Vanilla Doom 3 doesn't run properly on Windows 7 64bit versions without being modded.

Download the following mods to ensure you get the most out of your newly minted, Steam re-released Doom 3.

And if you're feeling the Doom bug. Some of you might want to check out: Doom 64 Ex

I know right? I was playing the other night, housemate walks past my door just as I'm reloading the plasma rifle, pokes his head in with a "damn, what game is that?"

So maybe some of the weapon sounds are wimpy, but that one sound is very satisfying, IMHO.

Prey is Windows 7 compatible already. If you buy a disc copy you can register the key on Steam, even though it's not a Steamworks title. Some of the digital versions can also be registered on Steam, but not all of them, so I would be cautious with that, but the DVD release tends to be sold at like $2-5 in the bargain bin in stores.

Some of the same DirectX 10/11 mods that exist for Doom 3 are also Prey and Quake 4 compatible.

Isn't GOG's version of Indigy Prophecy Windows 7 compatible by the way?

Funny how they added "Not compatible with Windows Vista/7/8" to the description of the original Doom 3 (I'm pretty sure it didn't say that until they released BFG edition). I've never had problems playing it in Vista or 7, so unless they patched in some incompatibility just to fuck with us, they're not entirely honest on that part.

We didn't do a damn thing. This was going to happen all along. Their options were:

1) Not pull the game. Idiots buy the cheaper version and demand refunds when they figure out it's not the new version; likely face an absurd lawsuit. Receive the second most amount of negative publicity.

2) Pull the game briefly and keep their mouth shut. Idiots rage over this for no reason. No money is lost or exchanges hands. They don't lose or gain any extra sales during this time. Receive the least amount of negative publicity.

3) Pull the game briefly and tell people why. "Hey, we're pulling the original game because a lot of you on Steam are idiots* and can't be trusted to tell the two games apart and we don't to go through the nonsense we would inevitably face by leaving it online." Not surprisingly, this would receive the most amount of negative publicity.

*Not all Steam members are idiots obviously. Not all Steam users are not Mensa members either. Steam is the biggest online games retailer and no matter how much one tries to argue, by virtue of being the biggest and in many cases the only digital retail a person might even know of, by sheer size they are the lowest common denominator in terms of consumer savvy. They are so big because even idiots know about Steam and how to buy games on the platform. If they didn't know about Steam then Steam wouldn't be the biggest, most successful online gaming distribution service. It's true of any market be it Windows or McDonalds or Walmart. Being the biggest means dealing with the lowest of the low.

@umdesch4: How is it "slimy" that they pulled Doom 3 for a few weeks while Doom 3 BFG edition was released? Rather than deal with numerous ignorant customers not realizing they were seperate titles because they willingly refuse to listen and believe only what they want to believe and have to upset them and refund their money or undoubtedly face a ridiculous lawsuit of the Mass Effect 3 type and all the negative publicity of that, they decided to pull the game temporarily which is exactly what they did and what they were going to do all along. They decided to go with the choice that gave them slightly less negative publicity in pulling the game. Good for them.

@thebigJ_A: Then please tell, you wise sage, what IS the purpose of his complaining? Cause I honestly don't get it. He is continuing to bitch because the game was briefly pulled off Steam, correct? Cause that's what was inferred by the post I quoted. He is pissed it was pulled for a few weeks while the new version was released to avoid market confusion. All I said was that's dumb and gave a list of reasons why. Just cause I respond in an asshole and smartass manner does not make it change the validity of either side of the argument, only how quickly one is to dismiss the other cause they can not seperate the delivery of the point from the point itself. That's not a straw man argument otherwise all arguments are straw man arguments.

Please, rather than further act like a completely douchey smart ass, enlighten me as to the point of his complaint. WHAT IS HIS POINT?

Aw man, it's almost like there's some sort of company rivalry going on here and some company doesn't want to put its games on some other company's massive digital distribution platform or something.

That's good news. Although the BFG Edition is in HD and the extra features are pretty cool, I still prefer playing the original Doom 3. Playing this game always reminds me of the video review made by Greg Kasavin back in 2004.

I cannot agree more. At launch Rage! was such a disappointment on PC. You had to mod an .ini file just to get it to look good and not have as much texture pop-in. I honestly am used to modding .ini files to make games on PC look better so that wasn't a big deal, but the lies about releasing an SDK or mod tools got me pissed. Carmack & Id never released them to this day, when they were a promise at release. I am not excited for Doom 4; I used to be. Id Tech 5 is a flop IMO. The problem is many textures are so blurry. The original Doom looks better than in certain spots of Rage. There's forums dedicated to how low res many textures are in Rage! aka Id Tech 5. Fuck Id, and thank you Patrick for being on top of them for their bullshit.

So, have you bought it again since it's been available? You better hurry, you never know when it might be taken down for five minutes again! If the answer's no, then you are clearly a hypocrite.

Just to nitpick on a point here, I think that's wrong. People are allowed to be upset about situations that don't directly affect them. If, for example, I were to complain that I think the war on drugs is ridiculous, and that I think marijuana should be legal, I would be a hypocrite if I didn't immediately go to Seattle and buy some as soon as that proposition that famously passed yesterday comes into effect.

Unfortunately, I don't partake of the stuff, so I won't be doing that. But I'm really glad it's going to be legal now, and a situation that I found unjust has been rectified (or not, this is hypothetical).

Similarly, I thought it was pretty slimy the way Valve handled the Doom 3 releases lately, and I may have mentioned it at least once in these threads recently. But I own the CDs, so it doesn't affect me. I think people can still voice an opinion about shady business practices, without being hypocrites if the practice doesn't directly affect them.

Even in your fantastically unique, absolute best case, and likely untrue, set of circumstances, the short temporary loss of being able to download a game off one unique online distributor when other versions are still plenty available is NOT worth the uproar. At all.

So, have you bought it again since it's been available? You better hurry, you never know when it might be taken down for five minutes again! If the answer's no, then you are clearly a hypocrite. A hypocrite would get severely overly dramatic about something, just like you did, and then once has the chance to "rectify" the situation for a paltry sum of money, refuses to take the opportunity. You said one thing, and did the opposite.

It was a straw man because you weren't, and STILL aren't, addressing the point he actually made, but some other point you'd rather argue against.

Maybe you don't know what a straw man is. Here, from good ol' Wikipedia:

A straw man is a fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and to refute it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

why is it silly? I loved original Doom 3. I passed my Doom3 disks and jewel case on to my nephew so that he might "grow up right" with solid Doom3 experience and become a true gamer.

Now I get to have my original flavor Doom 3 and the BFG version too.

Don't call me silly for liking games and having a different (and equally valid) opinion than your own.

I'll call you silly for getting all up in arms when you had YEARS to repurchase it again on Steam but now only getting upset that you can't for a brief period of time. Have you even purchased it again through Steam since it's been back up? lol, exactly.

Also, there are other digital retailers than Steam, just so you know.

Plus, everybody in their right mind, who has a right mind, knew it was going to be back on Steam eventually and, as I specifically stated when the original article about this went up, it would be back up in a bout a month. And looky here, it's been about a month give or take a week.

wow what an amazing case study in a classic straw man logical fallacy. Thanks. I can show this to people. It's educational.

Prevent market confusion. It's better than putting up with what would have been the inevitable onslaught of dumb consumers that complained that they were "mislead" by having a new title next to the cheaper, older title. It's stupid but it is 100% and it was a smart move on their part. Who did they piss off? "Fans" who had no intent of buying the old version and honestly still don't?

I've been playing it recently via my original discs (and yeah, where did I put that pewter figurine?). I never finished it back in the day, so I'm doing that now. I forgot how long it was. I checked my progress against a walkthrough by the time I got part way through Delta Labs, just to reassure myself that this game does in fact end. I did enjoy a fair chunk of it, and I'm not hating the experience, but the last couple sessions (I only get about 90 minutes at a time to play it) I feel like I'm just doing it for the sake of finishing it.

Already own the ID collection, cost me 30 quid a few years back. I'll think I'll stick with the 360 version of BFG though, because A) That's where my friends are playing it and B) I don't rate my games by what kind of shadows they render.
