Hey, Turn On Your PlayStation 3

All clear, game on.

And just like that, it was over. When we crossed 00:00 GMT, PlayStation 3s previously impacted by the crazy trophy install issues and bad clock setting and all that other junk started clearing up. PlayStation 3 hardware began returning to normal. And all was apparently right with the world (unless you're following this developing Infinity Ward story that Patrick Klepek's talking about on G4, which sounds kind of intense).

Uh... where was I. Oh, right. Here's Sony's statement about the situation:

We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.

If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet.

I'd guess that someone's tearing through whatever internal bit of code caused this to happen and is making sure it won't happen again. Maybe we'll get another firmware update out of all this! Woo!

@TotalEklypse:
While I agree with yopu about people way over reacting to this, there is a major difference between what happened today and the live crash a while back.

With what happened today you couldn't play games period. There is no reason why a problem with an internal clock should make it impossible for me to play single player games. I fully understand that the online goes down sometimes and I can't always get my MP fix, but an internet fuck up shouldn't prevent me from playing any game I might have by myself.

That being said, since live is a "premium" service, things like the live crash should never happen either. So really, neither of these events are excusable, but since they are related to video games, they aren't worth having a heart attack over either

@ashqarah:  since the new GB update, watching GB videos on your ps3 is impossible. The new player is not supported by the ps3's crappy browser.

That IW thing sounds like a prank. Of course, now that I said that it won't be, but.... better be a prank. Even though, if it is, it's a terrible one.

So, can someone remind me not to turn on my PS3 on February 28th, 2014?

I am sure I will forget.

It's a good idea.  Sadly, I'm halfway through the update process, which thanks to my slow-ass Internet will take another two hours.  I think the save data will be okay, but there was some jargon about losing save data if the game was version 2.2 instead of 2.1.  Crossing my fingers that it reverted back to 2.1

I'm happy for all of you Playstation 3 owners and I'm gonna let you finish, but the situation at Infinity Ward seems kinda fucked up right now if Patrick Klepek is to be believed.

@teh_destroyer: It was almost as good though.
People were freaking out and getting all paranoid.
"Oh no, what are we gonna do? We have to send in our PS3s because they won't ever work again boo-hooo I whine a lot like a little bitch getting violated by a bear"
Heck, most of the GB users were freaking out because the thought of them loosing their trophies was killing them.
It was rather fun to sit and watch the ignorance =D

I don't see an apology in there anywhere, all my progress made with Heavy Rain is lost.

Sony have fucked up twice in the last week - this shenanigans and can't use the download code for Heavy Rain special content. And if you do,YOU have to ring THEM to beg for them to give you the soundtrack. What is up with you Sony, go suck a nut.

I still think they'll offer something like a free PSN download (flow for example) to make up for it. They'll want the whole affair forgotten.

Thankfully, it was nowhere near as bad as prophecised. Some people were suggesting the end of the Playstation. Nuh-uh. God Of War's still coming.

That's kind of funny. So, in other words, "looking into it" and "resolving the problem" meant having them just wait a day for the calendar to roll over. I wonder if the same thing will happen again in 4 years?

that was faster then how Microsoft dealt with there issue over Christmas a year ago. Sony still sucks for this situation. In return I want them to never show another episode of the tester.

@Grognard66:
you mean next year. Its not the fact it was a leap year, its the fact it wasn't a leap year. Leap years come every 4 years..thus don't turn on your ps3s on that date for another 2 years

Or people could be pissed off with the general lack of information Sony was putting out yesterday, and they claim they 'fixed' it. It could be worse of course..my ps3 went wrong for a day, my 360 has been rrod for a year.

edit: Waaaait a second. Could this be how we take down skynet? Make sure it's a non leap year and watch the machines go batshit crazy trying to divide 10 by 4?

Fact is, Sony kept referring to it as a PSN issue, which it wasn't. They said they would be working around the clock to fix it, which they didn't. They only announced what the problem was about 15 hours after every other forum on the entire internet figured it out. Basically, it was a "wait untill midnight GMT and it should work!!".. which it did. But Sony didn't admit that. They claimed to have "fixed" whatver "PSN" problems there where!! It's actually kind of funny.. saved me having to play that god awful Aliens Vs Predator again, though!

@TotalEklypse: agreed man. people are dumb. i actually saw a guy on gamesradar post that the xbox never has any problems and that people should just switch. and all i could think is how easily people forget the abysmal fail rate of the 360. im not hating, i love the 360 but i mean come on, you cant say the ps3 sucks because of this tiny malfunction that lasted less than a day.

I totally agree with everyone about "overreacting".
Tho I do really wish Sony would be a little more open with their users.

Also, I really hope you all remember to how to act like this the next time XBox Live goes down for a few hours.

Mine was back when I turned it on about 9pm PST, just like nothing ever happened. My borderlands DLC's were back and the save game took me right back to T-Bone Junction. During the outage the game was claiming that I had not downloaded Knoxx, and was kicking me straight to Firestone.  Strangely enough, the guns I had acquired in Knoxx were there, but they said 'Armory Required' in red and were not equippable.

No, it's not the same thing. My PS3 hasn't been connected to the internet in half a year, and this still happened to it. Couldn't play games offline on a console, that's an issue. PSN could go down for 2 months and I wouldn't notice.

I wasn't saying it was the same thing.
I was kinda just saying "remain calm" in general - while trying to remind all the bigtime Sony fans to remember how forgiving they are of technical difficulties next time XBox Live has a hiccup is all.

I really do hope there's a firmware update to fix this properly... I do so enjoy updating firmware!

Seriously though, it definitely seems to have been blown up by certain people; and yeah I was bummed for like a few minuets that I couldn't play Heavy Rain yesterday but seriously some people need to sort out some priorities if this was that big of a deal for them. Now, wtf is going on at Infinity Ward?

I wasn't angry or bummed out when that did happen. I just stayed calm. I just had the basic annoyed feeling when your something doesn't work even if you don't use the device right now. I had mass effect 2 and Neverwinter nights 1 to past the time.
