Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro Working on New Silent Hill

Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus will apparently star, as well.

Sony briefly teased a new game called P.T. during its Gamescom press conference, but remained intentionally vague about it. The company published a playable demo as soon as the conference ended, and Twitch streamer SoapyWarPig discovered P.T.'s elusive secret: it's a teaser for a new Silent Hill game.

No Caption Provided

It's not just any Silent Hill game, though. Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Pan's Labyrinth), and actor Norman Reedus (Walking Dead) are all involved.

Kojima has confessed a desire to reboot Silent Hill in the past, and Guillermo del Toro has talked about his passion for video games at lengh. Del Toro was even developing a trilogy of horror games with THQ, but the series never got off the ground. It's unclear what involvement Kojima will have with this new Silent Hill, as he was a producer on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, as well, but reportedly had little hands-on involvement with the development.

Most people are gonna flip out over this news. I want to flip out over this news (del Toro!!!!), but I'm not the biggest Kojima fan lately. But maybe it'll work out the same way as Lords of Shadow? Everyone wins? I guess?

@saft: Pan's Labyrinth isn't explicitly a horror movie, but it's brutal and really goddamn creepy. I highly recommend it.

Hideo Kojima is a terrible, terrible writer, which will probably make this the best game ever.

Don't play the games. People like us will continue to play and enjoy them.

Who me? I can't wait to try it out! Just because I find his stuff to be pretty nuts doesn't mean I hate his work/games.

I saw the quote but didn't read it. Looks like I got read on my face.

I haven't seen much from Guillermo Del Toro though, other than Pacific Rim which i didn't really care for. Can anyone recommend any good horror movie he's made?

I'm not a very big fan of his, but I guess his best "horror" movie (directed and written by him) is The Devil's Backbone, but it's not really horror, and it isn't very good, although it has a pretty awesome atmosphere. It also has a fair few unnecessary caricaturesque political implications.. But you wouldn't really see them if you're not familiar with Spanish history. The same goes for Pans Labyrinth, but I find that one even more grotesquely simplistic.

also @obcdexter and @roomrunner although I agree that some of the creature designs on some of his movies is truly spectacular. Particularly with Del Toro, a lot of people tend to assume it is ALL HIM, when a lot of his designs are pretty average and are spectacularly executed by artists like Wayne Barlow... sure he has the vision to select the correct artist to execute his idea, but that's a different thing.

In any case I do hope it does translate into a rejuvenation of the franchise.. that's for sure.

I don't see any downside to this collaboration (yet). But both men may just be putting their name on it - having done such things before - so I'll wait for some actual gameplay footage before moving to cautious optimism.

P.T. was fantastic!!!!

How did you beat it? I'm at the end where the ghost is in the phone, and yet I've spent hours trying to get that fucking phone to ring.

You have to wait for the bell to ring, go through the "loop door", keep repeating that until the clock reads 0:00, then wait at the phone for a while until the baby laughs and then the phone will ring, R3 on it and the radio will say something, go back through the loop door and you are done.

Sadly, this didn't work for me. Just for you to know, your the third way I've seen to end P.T.

shouldnt he be working on mgs?

Maybe the newly opened Konami LA will handle it? And maybe Guillermo del Toro will be directing / writing it, while Kojima provides the technology, and maybe as an adviser?

I played the original Silent Hill (the only Silent Hill I played in fact) in a dark room on a tiny black and white 13 inch TV screen at my grandparents' house in the middle of nowhere in the south of Ireland... and It was completely terrifying.

I bought the game because of the demo that came with MGS on the PS1, so in my mind, Kojima has always been tangentially a part of Silent Hill.

Bring back Akira Yamaoka or cancel the game, simple as that. It's not a Silent Hill game without his music.

Anyone even 1% skeptical about this needs to play P.T. It's hands-down the scariest shit I've ever seen. It's not about jump-scares or gross-outs; it's pure, genuine horror.

Yeah, it's like a really grim fairy tale. One of those movies you'd recommend to anyone.

I for one am excited for this news. I'm a HUGE Metal Gear fan, and have loved pretty much every Metal Gear game, and while I've only seen Hellboy and Pacific Rim on the Del Toro front, I enjoyed them enough and have been meaning to see Pan's Labrynth that I take this as great news as well. I'm not a huge Walking Dead fan, but I Norman Reedus is obviously the most consistent thing in that series and I loved him in Boondock Saints so that's a bonus as far as I'm concerned. I am hoping though that Kojima's involvement is actually something worth while as opposed to his limited involvement in Lords of Shadow, but we'll see, as a big Metal Gear fan even I'll contend to taking issue with the fact that Konami has failed to do anything good as of late with any of their other franchises (and I'm still burned over Igarashi leaving) but I guess we'll wait and see what the future holds.

This is like the best thing...ever? though, I don't really think they can do a SH like the first two, they're going to do it on their own style, more like a SH done by Suda than a SH done by the old team Silent.

Still, this is one of the few games I'm really waiting for.

Hopeful of this. I didn't jump and scream like the chick in the trailer but I just watch a playthrough maybe I need to play it for that. I liked the lack of jump scares and they seem to have a good sense of atmosphere. Would like to have another good SH game for once. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, every single one of the four main Metal Gear Solid games all feel unique and distinctive to one another.

I don't get the hate at Kojima as well. Patrick mentioned the character design on Quiet, but I don't get what's wrong with it. Is it because she wears so little and still kills everyone? To judge Kojima about certain design and story choices on what we've seen up to now is totally premature. We don't know the reasoning behind the character Quiet, maybe it all makes sense in the end (of The Phantom Pain).
He can come up with some weird stuff alright and if there's one series that could use a little more weirdness (since game 4) then it's this one.
